THE SKIN I LIVE IN Review

[This is a re-print of my review that ran during the Toronto International Film Festival.  The film opens today in limited release.]

Never doubt Pedro Almodóvar. He may not deliver a movie you like, but it will probably be a movie unlike any you’ve seen that year. With his latest film, The Skin I Live In, he slow plays the audience. He introduces a slightly off-kilter world, but you can wrap your mind around it. When the film gets melodramatic, you’re slightly amused but you know that Almodóvar is no stranger to that tone. Then the movie gets a little slow, a little redundant, and dare I say a little pedestrian. And then The Skin I Live In starts building to something. You tell yourself…”No…that’s not going to happen. That’s too fucking crazy. He wouldn’t—” and then the film hits you with a twist that’s narratively sound, thematically fitting, and will leave you picking your exploded brain off the floor.

Antonio Banderas Talks THE SKIN I LIVE IN and PUSS IN BOOTS

From Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, The Skin I Live In is a story of extreme revenge. Ever since his wife was burned in a car crash, eminent plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) has been obsessed with creating a new skin that could have saved her. After years of study and experimentation, he needs a human guinea pig – one whom no one will miss.

At the film’s press day, actor Antonio Banderas spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about the genesis of this project, what it was like to reunite with Pedro Almodovar after more than 20 years since their last film together, what it was like to play such a cold and emotionless psychopath, and working on set with such an oppressive mood, in telling this very layered and complex story. He also talked about getting to explore his lighter side for Puss in Boots, and how he hopes his bad boy cat gets a franchise of his own. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

New Trailer and Poster for Pedro Almodovar’s THE SKIN I LIVE IN

A new trailer for Pedro Almodovar’s latest effort The Skin I Live In has been released, and I still have no idea what’s going on. The new trailer is fairly similar to the last one we saw back in June, but adds a few new clips as well as a bit of context/exposition (but just barely). The film centers on a plastic surgeon who imprisons and torments his partner in his basement while plotting his revenge against the man who raped his daughter. Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya star as the surgeon and partner, respectively. Almodovar is an interesting director, but this movie looks straight up surreal.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film will be screening at the Toronto Film Festival as well as the New York Film Festival this fall. The Skin I Live In opens October 14.

We’ve got some release date news for you this afternoon. First up, a couple of movies that premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival have been slated. The financial crisis-centered drama Margin Call is now set for an October 21st, 2011 release (via Box Office Mojo). The film stars Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, Mary McDonnell, Demi Moore and Stanley Tucci. Additionally, Jeff Nichols’ intense psychological drama Take Shelter is set for a limited release on September 30th (via The Playlist) before going wide on October 7th. Starring Michael Shannon, the film generated a good amount of buzz at Sundance.

The release date for Pedro Alomodovar’s next film The Skin I Live In has been shifted from October 7th to October 14th. Based on Thierry Jonquet’s novel Tarantula, the film stars Antonio Banderas as a plastic surgeron out for revenge on the man who raped his daughter. Finally, IFC Films will release Julia Leigh’s dark psychosexual drama Sleeping Beauty on October 28th (via The Playlist). The film stars Emily Browning and was an official selection for the Cannes Film Festival.

New Trailer for Pedro Almodovar’s THE SKIN I LIVE IN

by Phil Brown    Posted: June 20th, 2011 at 2:17 pm

Pedro Almodovar can usually be counted on for odd movies that feel outside of the box, but his latest film The Skin I Live In looks like it could reach previously unattained weirdo heights for the director. The film premiered at Cannes last month and is already set for a fall release stateside, so pre-release footage of the surreal Antonio Banderas-starred plastic surgery thriller has been gradually finding its way to the internet over the last few weeks.

Today a new trailer has been released that promises even more vibrant cinematography and body-stocking clad fight scenes than ever before. Even viewed in this electric guitar-backed 60-second clip, The Skin I Live In doesn’t look like anything the director has attempted before or like any other movie coming out in the next few months. Hit the jump to this new trailer in all its kinky glory.

McConaughey, Maguire, Vergara, and Efron to Star in Lee Daniels’ THE PAPERBOY

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 13th, 2011 at 10:10 am

Matthew McConaughey, Tobey Maguire, Sofia Vergara, and Zac Efron will star in the adaptation of the 1995 Pete Dexter novel The Paperboy for Precious director Lee Daniels.  The story is about the slacker son of a newspaper editor and publisher who gets caught up in a murder investigation with his older brother and (and this is from the official book description) Ward’s partner, “evil dandy Yardley Acheman.  I never thought four words could go together so perfectly.

THR reports that filmmaker “Pedro Almodovar (Talk to Her) developed the project for over a decade with Dexter before Daniels came on board.  As we reported in February, Daniels wanted Bradley Cooper, Alex Pettyfer, and Vergara so 1 out of 3 ain’t bad especially when you consider that the one you got is terrific and the other two are kind of bland.  McConaughey did some great work earlier this year with The Lincoln Lawyer, Maguire is always reliable, and I’m willing to give Efron a shot at weightier material.  Hit the jump for the synopsis of the book (which has nothing to do with the classic arcade game pictured above).

Teaser Trailer for Pedro Almodovar’s THE SKIN I LIVE IN

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: May 8th, 2011 at 2:18 pm

The Skin I Live In, the latest from writer/director Pedro Almodovar, is going to be weeeeeird.  I suppose we knew this from the logline: while plotting his revenge against the man who raped his daughter, a plastic surgeon (Antonio Banderas) imprisons and torments his partner (Elena Anaya) in an operating theater in his basement.  The new teaser trailer drives the point home, packing plenty of disturb into thirty seconds.  The Skin I Live In will premiere later this month at the Cannes Film Festival — where prior Almodovar movies All About My Mother and Volver have won awards — before a theatrical release in November.

Marisa Paredes, Jan Cornet, Roberto Alamo, Blanca Suárez, Eduard Fernández, José Luis Gómez, Bárbara Lennie, Susi Sánchez, Fernando Cayo, and Teresa Manresa also star in the film, based on the novel Tarantula by Thierry Jonquet.  Watch the trailer after the jump.

The release dates for a couple of Sony Pictures Classics flicks are now known. Director Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In is set to be released in the US in November, with a UK release date of August 26th. The film, an adaptation of Thierry Jonquet’s novel Tarantula, stars Antonio Banderas as a plastic surgeron out for revenge on the man who raped his daughter.

Additionally, Jeff Nichols’ Sundance hit Take Shelter is slated for an October 7th release. Starring Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, the thriller tells the story of a husband and father trying to figure out if his dreams of an apocalyptic storm are a sign of things to come or a result of his own mental illness. Hit the jump to read the official synopsis for both films.

Antonio Banderas to Star in Pedro Almodovar’s Next Film, THE SKIN I LIVE IN

by Ramses Flores    Posted: May 5th, 2010 at 9:29 am

Antonio Banderas is now set to star in director Pedro Almodovar’s (Talk to Her, Volver) next film, La Piel que Habito (Spanish for The Skin I Live In).  THR reports that Banderas will team up with the famed Spanish director for the first time in 20 years to play “a plastic surgeon looking for revenge on the man who raped his daughter“

The film, which will shoot this summer in Spain, will be an adaptation of Thierry Jonquet’s novel, Tarantula.  You can read the synopsis for the novel after the jump along with some quotes from Almodovar on the project and why we might be seeing some more collaborations between him and Penelope Cruz in the near future.

BROKEN EMBRACES Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: March 23rd, 2010 at 12:02 am

Broken Embraces movie image Penelope Cruz 4.jpg

Pedro Almodovar went from being the height of daring and sexy art house cinema to an Oscar favorite and old hand. As Noah Cross would say like whores and ugly buildings Almodovar has been around long enough to be respectable. He has won his foreign film for All About My Mother, Talk to Her netted him an Oscar for his screenplay, and Penelope Cruz has won one for her acting (albeit for her work in a Woody Allen film – regardless, it was a career win). Their relationship has run over four movies, so it’s not exactly a De Niro/Scorsese type relationship, but there’s obviously chemistry there. In Broken Embraces the two reunite to tell the story of a mistress (Cruz) and a writer/director (Lluis Homar) and their tragic love story. My review of Broken Embraces after the jump.

Penelope Cruz Interview BROKEN EMBRACES

Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz has worked with some of the best and most innovative filmmakers around the world, including Woody Allen, Rob Marshall and Pedro Almodovar. Broken Embraces marks the fourth time that she has teamed up with Almodovar, this time playing the love of a filmmaker, who leaves him devastated when she dies in a car accident.

During a press conference for this latest Spanish language film, Penelope Cruz talked about playing powerful women, working with Almodovar since she was a teenager, and how she really doesn’t like to be labeled. Read what she had to say after the jump
