I haven’t gotten around to seeing Alexandre Aja’s remake of Piranha 3D, but I heard good things all around regarding its creative kills, delightful stupidity, and all-around exploitative nature. It’s a movie that knows what it wants to be an pulls it off. That general consensus combined with a solid box office performance has led to the sequel Piranha 3DD. The new film has the carnivorous fishies headed to a water park, which aren’t really sanitary places to begin with. Dimension Films premiered the first trailer last night at the SpikeTV Scream Awards and it looks like they’ve definitely got the “DD” part down. Also, Ving Rhames’s character apparently shops at the same prosthetics store as Cherry Darling. I have no complaints about gun-legs.
Hit the jump to check out the teaser trailer. The fish food cast also includes Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, Meagan Tandy, Katrina Bowden, David Hasselhoff, Christopher Lloyd, Paul Scheer, and Gary Busey. Piranha 3DD opens next year.
We have arrived at the official end of summer: Labor Day weekend. Never a blockbuster in terms of grosses, this year’s late summer crop of movies – two horror titles and a thriller – appears weaker than usual. In fact, it looks like it will take four days for the newcomers to earn what last year’s Labor Day releases made in only three.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | The Help | $14,200,000 | $118.6 |
| 2 | The Debt | $9,670,000 | $11.6 |
| 3 | Apollo 18 | $8,700,000 | $10.7 |
| 4 | Shark Night 3D | $8,640,000 | $10.5 |
| 5 | Rise of the Planet of the Apes | $7,800,000 | $160 |
| 6 | Colombiana | $7,400,000 | $21.9 |
| 7 | Our Idiot Brother | $5,180,000 | $15.4 |
| 8 | Don’t be Afraid of the Dark | $4,940,000 | $16.3 |
| 9 | Spy Kids 4 | $4,630,000 | $29 |
| 10 | The Smurfs | $4,000,000 | $131.9 |

As the current 3D trend is taking over movie theaters everywhere, it’s now poised to invade your living room. In order to complement the surge in production of 3D televisions and Blu-ray players, The Digital Entertainment Group (DEG) has announced 36 titles set to be available just in time for the holiday season, with dozens more to follow in early 2011. 10 of the titles will hit stores on November 16, just in time for Black Friday.
The releases include a wide range of titles from AIX Records, DreamWorks Animation, Giant Screen Films, Image Entertainment, IMAX Corporation, Lionsgate, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video. It also includes a number of high-profile titles that will be released as exclusives for certain 3D televisions. “We are excited to see so much industry support for bringing Blu-ray 3D home,” said Ron Sanders, President, Warner Home Video and President, DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group. “And now, consumers buying 3D home entertainment systems over Black Friday weekend will have ample 3D programming to accompany them.” For a full list of films being released on 3D Blu-ray for the holidays, hit the jump.

Dimension Films landed a surprise hit (if opening 6th at the box office qualifies as a hit) with Piranha 3D and now, as we reported in August, they’re going in for a sequel. The new film will be titled Piranha 3DD as a nod to the series’ love of large breasts. The guys being brought on to create this cinematic masterpiece are the folks behind the 2005 horror film, Feast: director John Gulager and screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (who also wrote the last four Saw movies). Deadline reports that Dimension is aiming to get Piranha 3DD into theaters by August 2011. Personally, I’m not shocked that they’re trying to turn it around that fast. I’m shocked that they’re writing a script.
No word if they’ll shoot in 3D or post-convert it like they did with Piranha 3D. Either way, I hope we get another fun argument between James Cameron and producer Mark Canton.

Veteran producer Mark Canton has had enough of James Cameron criticizing other people’s films. A few weeks ago, Cameron was telling Entertainment Weekly that The Hurt Locker would have been better in 3D. Fast-forward to the present, and Cameron is back in his film critic hat telling Vanity Fair that movies like Alexandre Aja’s Piranha 3D are “exactly what we should not be doing in 3D.” Naturally, the film’s co-producer, Mark Canton, took exception to Cameron’s comments and has circulated an open letter to the hyper-successful filmmaker in response. Some of the highlights from the letter include:
While I have defended Mr. Cameron on the site for his contributions as a filmmaker, even I have to admit that I’d rather he spend more time working on his own films than giving his opinion on everyone else’s. In short, for all that he has brought to the practice, film analysis is not one of them and, personally, I would prefer it stay that way. To read the almost 1,500 word letter in its entirety, hit the jump. Finally, as always, feel free to discuss your thoughts on Piranha 3D and its use of the technology in the comments.

It looks like Piranha 3D‘s fake Oscar campaign has worked. Ving Rhames has won/will win the Acadamy Award for Best Actor in 2011 for his work in Alexandre Aja’s 3D horror-fest. While this Funny or Die video exists in a wonderful alternate universe, I would like to imagine the day when Ving Rhames will give what looks to be one of the all-time great award acceptance speeches. And no, I don’t know why he’s holding a tux throughout the speech.
Hit the jump to check out the video. Piranha 3D is now in theaters.

Even though it landed 6th at the box office this weekend, Dimension is moving forward with a sequel to Piranha 3D. In the press release we received, producer Mark Canton said, “We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving PIRANHA 3D, but cheering for it. And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.” I’ve personally only heard raves about the movie and that it’s gory beyond all reason. And since Piranha 3D hardly cost any money, it’s not too much of a surprise that they’re moving forward with a sequel.

With only days left in the summer movie season, a stunning five new releases elbowed their way into theatres this weekend. And not one was a match for The Expendables. Sylvester Stallone’s testosterone parade easily held its place at number one for its second weekend; earning an estimated $16.5 million and bringing its new domestic cume to $64.8 million.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | The Expendables | $16,500,000 | $64.8 |
| 2 | Vampires Suck | $12,200,000 | $18.5 |
| 3 | Eat Pray Love | $12,000,000 | $47.1 |
| 4 | Lottery Ticket | $11,100,000 | $11.1 |
| 5 | The Other Guys | $10,100,000 | $88.1 |
| 6 | Piranha 3D | $10,035,000 | $10 |
| 7 | Nanny McPhee Returns | $8,310,000 | $8.3 |
| 8 | The Switch | $8,100,000 | $8.1 |
| 9 | Inception | $7,655,000 | $261.8 |
| 10 | Scott Pilgrim vs. the World | $5,035,000 | $20.7 |
Five new movies crammed into theatres on Friday. All of them arrived without much fanfare or anticipation which is why it shouldn’t surprise anyone that none of them managed to make much money either. The clear king of the newbies – with all of $4.4 million – was Fox’s Vampires Suck. The Twilight spoof actually launched on Wednesday and had earned $6.3 million in its first two days in 2,978 locations. That estimate was not far behind the Friday total for The Expendables; though the latter should have no trouble hanging on to its weekend title for a second week in a row. Elsewhere in the top five, the estimates are too close to call between new titles like Lottery Ticket and Piranha 3D and holdover Eat Pray Love. The amounts in question are so small it hardly seems worth arguing over, in any case. Farther down the box office food chain: The Switch placed a dismal number seven (barely ahead of the sequel to Nanny McPhee!) despite the best efforts of Jennifer Aniston to make her fecund film appear ‘controversial.’ Full coverage on the weekend of bad options when you check back tomorrow.
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | The Expendables | $5,000,000 | $53.3 |
| 2 | Vampires Suck | $4,400,000 | $10.7 |
| 3 | Lottery Ticket | $3,800,000 | $3.8 |
| 4 | Eat Pray Love | $3,700,000 | $38.8 |
| 5 | Piranha 3D | $3,600,000 | $3.6 |

While at Comic-Con, I was given the chance to interview the cast and crew of this summer’s bloodiest 3D horror film, Piranha 3D. After screening roughly six minutes of footage the night before, I was eager to see what everyone had to say as I was blown away by what I had witnessed. During the interviews I had access to three groups. The first was Jerry O’Connell, Kelly Brook, and Paul Scheer. The second group was director Alexandre Aja and producer Mark Canton. The third and final group featured Elizabeth Shue, Adam Scott, and Steve McQueen. Hit the jump for all three videos and to find more of our coverage of Piranha 3D, which hits theaters this Friday.

Opening this weekend is a movie I’m actually very excited to check out: Piranha 3D. While some movies try to be something they’re not, director Alexandre Aja’s (The Hills Have Eyes) Piranha 3D knows exactly what it is and he embraces it with open arms. From what I’ve heard, the film is loaded with a lot of nudity, extreme violence, and tons of fake blood flying everywhere. Needless to say, I’m in.
Anyhow, The Weinstein Company has sent over three clips from the film and a few images, so if you’d like to get a taste of Piranha 3D, hit the jump to check everything out. Finally, if you missed the awesome “For Your Consideration” Piranha 3D ad we posted earlier today, check it out here.

Last year, Avatar showed a 3D film could dominate at the Academy Awards. This year, Piranha 3D is the 3D film that’s coming to own all the Oscars. If 3D is here to stay, why not honor a 3D film that stars Paul Scheer, Adam Scott, Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, Kelly Brook, and Hollywood Treasure, Jerry O’Connell? Don’t like the cast? That’s okay because there’s plenty of gore and nudity, but the Academy has no problem with either as long as it’s done tastefully. And if there’s one word that I’m sure describes Piranha 3D, it’s “tasteful”.
Hit the jump to check out this hilarious but sadly fake “For Your Consideration” ad from Funny Or Die for Piranha 3D, which hits theaters on Friday.

Look, it’s very simple. Do you want something more from 3D? Perhaps, more shit flying in your face (as Eli Roth would put it), lots of bloody mayhem by the razor-sharp teeth of piranha on steroids, and lots of babes? If you answered yes, to all of that, then Alexandre Aja’s Piranha 3D is going to give you everything you asked for, and more. We have the first image of those beefed-up fish, and it should be clear that these things do not mess around. After watching some of the opening scenes last week during Comic-Con and having my WTF meter break in the process, this is just the beginning. I truly can’t wait until Dimension releases a red-band trailer for everyone.
Join me after the break to see the full image, the current trailer, a synopsis of the film, and my initial impressions.
