The weekend played out pretty much as expected after Friday’s estimates, except for one factor (and I know this is a shocker): final weekend tallies ended up on the low end of projections across the board. We are still dealing with box office totals that are down over 10% from 2010 but, compared to the 45% we were down last weekend, that’s progress!
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | Battle: LA | $36,000,000 | $36 |
| 2 | Rango | $23,050,000 | $68.6 |
| 3 | Red Riding Hood | $14,100,000 | $14.1 |
| 4 | The Adjustment Bureau | $11,450,000 | $38.4 |
| 5 | Mars Needs Moms | $6,800,000 | $6.8 |
| 6 | Hall Pass | $5,105,000 | $34.9 |
| 7 | Beastly | $5,090,000 | $16.9 |
| 8 | Just Go With It | $4,000,000 | $93.9 |
| 9 | The King’s Speech | $3,625,000 | $129 |
| 10 | Gnomeo & Juliet | $3,546,000 | $89 |

It was a record-breaking weekend at the box office from almost every perspective. In fact, so many records were broken that it is kind of hard to keep them straight. By Friday morning The Twilight Saga: New Moon had already passed The Dark Knight and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to become the top midnight debut of all-time with over $26 million. The sequel to Twilight was also number one in pre-sales and on Saturday it brought Summit Entertainment both the highest Single Day and the All-Time Friday titles with $72.7 million from its 4,024 screens. One record New Moon couldn’t claim? The all-time weekend title. With an estimated $140.7 million through Sunday, New Moon fell short of both the $151 million debut of Spider-Man 3 and the $158 million start of The Dark Knight. But, for a film franchise that only came on the scene one year ago and which was aiming for right around $100 million? Third place must feel pretty sweet.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | New Moon | $140,700,000 | $140.7 |
| 2 | Bind Side | $34,510,000 | $34.5 |
| 3 | 2012 | $26,500,000 | $108.2 |
| 4 | Planet 51 | $12,600,000 | $12.6 |
| 5 | A Christmas Carol | $12,230,000 | $79.7 |
| 6 | Precious | $11,008,000 | $21.4 |
| 7 | The Men Who Stare at Goats | $2,773,000 | $27.6 |
| 8 | Couples Retreat | $1,952,000 | $105 |
| 9 | The Fourth Kind | $1,730,000 | $23.3 |
| 10 | Law Abiding Citizen | $1,615,000 | $70 |

Last week, Sony held a press junket at the Griffith Observatory, here in Los Angeles, to help promote their upcoming animated movie Planet 51. Since the film takes place on another planet, I think the location was perfect. Also, almost every press day is held at a hotel, and it’s great to “shake and bake” the junket format. But while the location was different, that didn’t stop Jessica Biel, Justin Long, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson from making all the journalists laugh during most of their press conference. While you may be sick of Justin Long and his Mac commercials, the guy is quick on his feet when reacting to questions. I was very impressed.
Anyway, after the jump to can either read the transcript of the press conference or listen to the audio. While I always think listening to the audio is better than reading a trancript, for this one, it’s almost mandatory. There is just no way to get some of the jokes that were being told by reading them. I promise, if you listen to the conversation, you’ll be laughing as much as we were. Read or listen after the jump:

Opening this Friday is the animated movie Planet 51. The film is about an American astronaut who lands on Planet 51 thinking he’s the first person to step foot on it. To his surprise, he finds the planet inhabited by little green people who are living in a world reminiscent of a cheerfully innocent 1950s America, and whose only fear is that it will be overrun by alien invaders. With the help of his robot companion “Rover” and his new friend Lem, Chuck must navigate his way through the world to try and get back to his spaceship before it returns home.
While I thought the story was mediocre, I was very impressed with the animation. Watching the film I was constantly looking at the texture and layers in the frame and was surprised by how great it looked. If you’re a fan of animation, it’s worth seeing just for what they accomplished. Just know the story is not going to wow you. So to help promote the film, we’ve been provided with ten clips and you can check them out after the jump.
