Coming off of the 2011 film adaptation of their comic property Cowboys and Aliens, Platinum Studios is looking to set up another feature that will take viewers under the sea. A previous adaptation for Atlantis Rising had been planned with DreamWorks back in 2008 but the film rights are now back in Platinum Studios’ hands. Attached producer Mark Canton (Immortals) had the following to say about the property:

“‘Atlantis Rising’ has the franchise potential of ‘Men in Black,’ which I greenlit for Scott while at Sony’s Columbia TriStar. I’m looking forward to bringing it to the screen with Platinum as a dynamic, state-of-the-art action thriller.”

Atlantis Rising was originally a five-issue miniseries centering on a 10,000 year old undersea civilization and their disastrous conflict with the surface world. Hit the jump to check out more on Atlantis Rising.

Comic Book News: Paramount Picks up THE MIGHTY; Practical Pictures to Adapt ALIEN AT LARGE

Regular readers of the site may think from time to time, “I read about all of these projects in development, but I never see them at my local multiplex.”  Studios like acquiring projects because A) it keeps other studios from getting them, and B) because one day they might actually turn it into a movie.  And because comic book movies have taken off, and studios are risk-averse entities chasing after profitable demographic, they want the rights to comic books in their stables.

For instance, Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures has optioned Keith Champagne and Peter Tomasi’s The Mighty.  It’s got a good premise: The protagonist is mortal, a tough cop. He hunts a villain who is the superhero and must overcome the obvious disadvantages of going up against someone with superpowers.  It reminds me of Gotham Central, a solid comic series you should check out.  But The Mighty may be the next Hench, a comic book movie that just sits there.  Hit the jump for more comic book news.

Platinum Studios’ Vampire Comic BLOOD NATION Destined for the Silver Screen

Blood Nation comic book (3).jpg

So you know that, in a post-Twilight world, we’re nowhere near done with vampire movies, right?  To wit, Variety reports that the Rob Moran vampire comic series Blood Nation–”the story of a country overrun by vampires and walled off from the rest of the world”–is bound for Hollywood.  In terms of recent Gothic reference points, this sounds more Daybreakers than Twilight.  But my gambler’s instinct suggests that the former’s $30 million take does not inspire a greenlight, while the latter’s status as billion dollar franchise ($1.12 billion worldwide before this summer’s Eclipse) does so in spades.  Too cynical?

Still, it sounds like a neat foundation for a movie, so I’ll take it no matter the muse.  The comic comes from Platinum Studios, whose Cowboys & Aliens lured director Jon Favreau and stars Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, and Harrison Ford for a summer 2011 release.
