A few days ago I sat down with producer John Davis for an extended interview. While the main purpose of our sit down was to talk about his new family film, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, starring Jim Carrey, we also covered his early career, his thoughts on VOD, his relationship with Eddie Murphy, what he has coming up, and many other subjects. Since the conversation was so wide ranging, I’m breaking it up into smaller parts, like I did with my interviews with producers Dan Lin and Neal Moritz.
While I debated what to post first, I’m going with Predator. Davis served as a producer on every Predator film including the two Alien vs. Predator movies. As a big fan of what producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimrod Antal did last year on Predators, I was curious if we’d get a sequel, and what was up with the franchise. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like anything is happening right now. However, I did learn that Schwarzenegger almost did Predator 2 and the deal broke down over $250,000. Hit the jump for more.

Top 10 lists are a dime a dozen in the Hollywood circle, but while most writers are busy compiling their “Best of” in terms of films, directors and performances I’m always more curious to explore the less-appreciated categories – particularly Best Motion Picture Score. And so without further ado, here are my picks for the Best Scores of 2010. Hit the jump to see the list.

Every once in awhile our office becomes unmanageable. And when I say our office, I mean my apartment. Specifically, behind the couch in my living room. Every so often so much stuff has accumulated in boxes that I need to do get rid of it so I can make room for whatever might be arriving in the future.
And that’s where all of you come in.
Over the past year, Collider’s traffic has hit levels I never thought possible. As a thank you to everyone who reads the site, I’ve decided to grab everything that’s sitting in boxes and give it all away to our readers. In addition, we’ve been given some awesome stuff to giveaway like The Hangover Extreme Edition DVD, Predators on DVD and Blu-ray, the Scrubs complete series, some Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Blu-rays and backstage passes, and I’ve even got a Conan TBS t-shirt that just came in the mail today. If you’d like to see what we’ve got and how to get something for free, just hit the jump.

Predator is one of the great action movies of the 1980’s. John McTiernan directed the hell out of it, and it is one of the great signature Arnold Schwarzenegger roles. They tried sequelizing it, and then there were the pathetic Alien vs. Predator films – Fox knew there was a franchise here, they just didn’t know how to pull it off. So they hired Robert Rodriguez to produce a new sequel that ignored all the other spin-offs, and to class it up, they ripped off James Cameron by naming it Predators. Nimrod Antal directs Adrian Brody, Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins, Laurence Fishburne, Alice Braga, Topher Grace, Louis Ozawa Changchein, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Oleg Taktarov as a group of killers rounded up by Predators, and let loose on an Alien planet to defend themselves. In this case, the hunters become the hunted until they become hunters hunting the hunters who are hunting them. My review of Predators on Blu-ray after the jump.
Attendance picked up on Saturday after a typically slow start to the Labor Day weekend on Friday. George Clooney’s The American was able to pull ahead of fellow newcomer Machete, resulting in a clear weekend win for the understated action movie.

Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products has sent over some images and info on their Comic-Con exclusives. While they might have previously released the images, this is my first time seeing them and I figure at least a few of you are like me. So if you’d like to see the exclusive toys for Avatar, The Simpsons, Predators, and Futurama, hit the jump. Finally, I’ll be at Comic-Con with a bunch of other Collider writers starting Wednesday afternoon. Expect a ton of updates from San Diego soon.
The buzz on Christopher Nolan’s Inception continues. Now, however, the topic has shifted from “how awesome will it be?” To “what does it all mean?” Today at least one question can be resolved: “How much money will it make?” In its opening weekend, Inception earned an estimated $60.4 million from its 3,792 locations. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, meanwhile, continued to struggle; earning $17.3 million for a five day total south of $25 million.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | Inception | $60,400,000 | $60.4 |
| 2 | Despicable Me | $32,730,000 | $118.3 |
| 3 | The Sorcerer’s Apprentice | $17,370,000 | $24.4 |
| 4 | The Twilight Saga: Eclipse | $13,500,000 | $264.9 |
| 5 | Toy Story 3 | $11,740,000 | $362.7 |
| 6 | Grown-Ups | $10,000,000 | $129.2 |
| 7 | The Last Airbender | $7,450,000 | $114.8 |
| 8 | Predators | $6,800,000 | $40 |
| 9 | Knight & Day | $3,700,000 | $69.2 |
| 10 | The Karate Kid | $2,200,000 | $169.2 |
With summer 2010 so clearly dominated by reboots and sequels, it’s nice to see an original concept rise to the top for a change. Even with Toy Story 3 and The Last Airbender still out there occupying those precious 3D screens, Universal’s 3D animated Despicable Me exceeded most projections by taking first place this weekend with an estimated $60.1 million.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | Despicable Me | $60,100,000 | $60.1 |
| 2 | Twilight Saga: Eclipse | $33,400,000 | $237 |
| 3 | Predators | $25,300,000 | $25.3 |
| 4 | Toy Story 3 | $22,000,000 | $340.2 |
| 5 | The Last Airbender | $17,150,000 | $100.2 |
| 6 | Grown Ups | $16,400,000 | $111.3 |
| 7 | Knight & Day | $7,850,000 | $61.9 |
| 8 | The Karate Kid | $5,700,000 | $164.6 |
| 9 | The A-Team | $1,800,000 | $73.9 |
| 10 | Cyrus | $1,375,000 | $3.5 |
After opening at number one on Friday, Despicable Me is now on track to become Universal’s first bona fide hit since the summer of 2008. No kidding. The 3D animated film brought in an estimated $21.7 million yesterday, and as only 44% percent of the 3,476 locations screening the family film are 3D equipped, that qualifies as a BIG win for the studio that, earlier this summer, brought you MacGruber. With a Saturday boost factored in for the PG flick, Despicable Me could hit a three day total of $55 million. That would keep last week’s headline-whore Eclipse in second place after earning $11 million on its second Friday. Robert Rodriguez’s Predators took third with an estimated $10.5 million from its 2,661 locations. That puts the reboot on track for a weekend in the $30 million neighborhood – basically the same neighborhood that Alien Vs. Predator inhabited in the summer of 2004. Full weekend results await when when you check back here tomorrow.
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | Despicable Me | $21,700,000 | $21.7 |
| 2 | Twilight Saga: Eclipse | $11,000,000 | $214.6 |
| 3 | Predators | $10.500,000 | $10.5 |
| 4 | Toy Story 3 | $6,500,000 | $323.4 |
| 5 | The Last Airbender | $5.200,000 | $88.2 |

In today’s action blockbuster marketplace, it’s refreshing to see a film that boils the genre down to its bare essentials and thrives as a lean, mean, disemboweling machine. Not designed to sell collectors glasses at Burger King or have an opening weekend gross that would dwarf the GDP of a third-world country, Predators is a solid B-action movie that delivers fun, thrills, and unapologetic violence for only a fraction of the cost of your run-of-the-mill special effects extravaganza.

Last week I had the opportunity to see Nimrod Antal’s Predators and participate in two press conferences after the screening. While I can’t say much about the movie, know that the highlight of my time at Collider thus far was telling Antal to his face how much I really liked this movie. We’ve already posted the press conference with director Nimrod Antal and producer Robert Rodriguez. Today we’ve got the actors press conference with Adrien Brody and Walton Goggins.
In the film, Brody and Goggins play characters that have literally been dropped out of the sky onto an unfamiliar planet where they are hunted by the film’s titular characters. Brody plays Royce, an American mercenary and Goggins plays Stans, a death row inmate just days away from his execution. While many people have doubted Brody’s ability to star in an action film, I believe Brody’s performance will pleasantly surprise all the doubters. To see what Brody and Goggins had to say about preparing for their roles, the first time they saw the original Predator, filming on location and much more, continue reading. Predators hits theaters this Friday.

With director Nimrod Antal’s Predators getting released in a week, 20th Century Fox has released the full press kit for the Robert Rodriguez produced film and included are 4 movie clips and 10 images. While I don’t get to see the film till next week, the buzz off the junket screening was very good – with our own Jake Lasker saying he loved the film. I hope he’s right. So if you’ve been looking forward to the movie, hit the jump to check out the clips and images.

Earlier today I had the opportunity to see a screening of Nimrod Antal’s Predators, followed by a press conference with Antal and producer Robert Rodriguez. While I can’t say much about the film, just know that I loved it. In our 25-minute press conference, Antal and Rodriguez spoke about:
Hit the jump for a full transcipt of the press conference. Make sure to check back next week to read about our other press conference with stars Adrien Brody and Walton Goggins. Predators hits theaters July 9th.

An age-restricted, international trailer for Nimrod Antal’s Predators has hit the net. It’s gory, has an amazing one-liner from Laurence Fishburne, and is way too spoilery. There’s only a handful of actors in this movie and the trailer shows one of them getting killed. Obviously, in a movie where all the characters are prey for the Predators, folks are going to die. But you don’t need to show me which ones and how they’re going to die. Why should I even have to say that? It’s common freaking sense. Also, it’s not even an inventive kill, so what exactly are they showing off?
Basically, this trailer shows too much. If that doesn’t bother you, then hit the jump to check it out. Predators hits theaters on July 9th.
UPDATE: Fox has asked us to remove the images.
If you’ve been looking forward to Predators, today is Christmas. That’s because a TON of new images from the Robert Rodriguez produced film have hit the net and they’re after the jump. The only thing to know is…if you’re trying to stay spoiler free, you might want to avoid the images. You are warned.
