Recently, Steve got the chance to sit down with producer John Davis to talk about his new family film, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, which opens this Friday. While we’ll be running the Penguins portion of the interview later this week, Davis gave updates on a number of other projects he’s currently working on, including the action-thriller Protection (which previously had Dwayne Johnson attached to star), David Ayer’s (Street Kings) remake/reboot of the 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger film Commando, and the action flick The Last Mission, which centers on a Navy SEAL who rounds up his old team to rescue his kidnapped daughter when the government fails to act.

Davis talks about how different Commando is from the original, confirms the script is a hard R, and talks about the development of Protection and The Last Mission. Dwayne Johnson Exclusive Video Interview FASTER; Plus Updates on PROTECTION and He’s Seen Part of His Fight with Vin Diesel in FAST FIVE

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: November 22nd, 2010 at 5:55 pm

In the past few weeks, I’ve run two interviews with Dwayne Johnson for Faster.  The first was from my set visit earlier this year, and the more recent interview was a lengthy 45 minute phone conversation while he was on the set of Fast Five.  Since we’d covered so many of the things that went into the making of Faster, when I sat down with him a few days ago at the Los Angeles press junket, I knew I’d have to mix it up.  Thankfully, Johnson was game for answering all my questions, and he talked about reading online reviews, why he’s excited for Faster, confirms that he wants to make more action movies, says Protection should be his next film after Journey to the Center of the Earth 2, and he even talks a bit about his fight with Vin Diesel in Fast Five.  Hit the jump to check it out:

FASTER THE CHRONICLES: Dwayne Johnson – Exclusive Interview that Covers FASTER, FAST FIVE, THE OTHER GUYS, 3D, More

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: November 15th, 2010 at 11:53 am

With Dwayne Johnson’s Faster opening November 24, we’ve partnered with a bunch of other online sites for Faster The Chronicles.  The seven chapter series features exclusive interviews with the stars and filmmakers of Faster, and each one offers a clue to winning The Ultimate Guy’s Getaway trip for two to Las Vegas, which includes roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations (2 nights) and $1000 in FAST cash.  If you’d like to enter, head over to the official Faster Facebook page.

Since we’ve been covering Faster extensively over the past few months (click here to read our coverage), you know this is Johnson’s return to kicking ass and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve said many times that while I understand why Johnson made those family films, I’ve always thought he should be one of the biggest action stars on the planet.

Anyway, for the final chapter of Faster The Chronicles, we landed an exclusive interview with Johnson.  During our 45 minute phone interview, Johnson talked to us about making Faster, who he plays in Fast Five and what the movie is about (he was filming in Atlanta when we spoke), how he got involved in The Other Guys, his thoughts on 3D, would he be interested in The Expendables 2, and, of course, I asked about Peter Berg and will we ever get a Rundown 2.  Hit the jump to check it out:

Last week we reported Dwayne Johnson had replaced Clive Owen in director Simon West’s (Con Air, The Mechanic, Tomb Raider) Protection.  I guess the casting is now official as we’ve just gotten a press release.  While most of the info was already known, there were a few new details on the film like the budget will be $35 million, Johnson’s character is called ‘Hombre’, and it’s scheduled to shoot this fall in New Mexico.  For the new synopsis and the full press release, hit the jump:

Dwayne Johnson Replaces Clive Owen in Action-Thriller PROTECTION

Chalk up another action flick for Dwayne Johnson as the actor has signed on to replace Clive Owen in the action-thriller ProtectionThe Wrap also reports that director Patrick Alessandrin (District 13: Ultimatum) has left the project.  We reported back in January that Owen and Alessandrin had come on board to replace Paul Walker and Simon West (Tomb Raider), respectively.  Written by Brandon Noonan, the story “follows a disgraced former Special Forces soldier who takes on a Mexican cartel in an attempt to rescue and protect a judge’s 21 year-old daughter, who has been targeted by the cartel for agreeing to testify against one of its members after she witnesses her father’s murder. The action will reportedly play out on both sides of the border.”

Johnson is currently shooting the action flick Faster and I’m jazzed that he’s picking up another pic in the genre rather than going back to the family films that underutilize his talent.  Yes, it’s funny to see the big muscular guy dressed in a tutu, but we all know that Johnson’s destiny is to be in movies where he beats people into chunks.

Director Gary Fleder Uses PROTECTION

Gary Fleder (Runaway Jury, The Express) has signed on to helm Protection.  Produced by John Davis (the upcoming Gulliver’s Travels and Marmaduke), the thriller, “centers on a college professor who investigates the disappearance of his wife and daughter and who must confront authorities at the Witness Protection Program to find them.”  Oh, those rascally folks at the Witness Protection Program.  Always up to no good, protecting witnesses, and what not.

Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard) will rewrite the spec script from Allan Loeb (21). [Variety]

Clive Owen Replaces Paul Walker in PROTECTION

While Production Weekly tweeted about it yesterday afternoon, Empire Online confirms that Clive Owen will replace Paul Walker in the action-thriller, Protection.  The film has also changed up its directors with Patrick Alessandrin (District 13: Ultimatum) replacing Simon West (Tomb Raider).  Working off a screenplay by Brendan Noonan, the story follows, “a Special Forces soldier facing down Mexican gangs to rescue a judge’s daughter.”  Clearly, it was the blazing originality of the project that attracted Owen.  But with Owen, you usually get one good movie to balance out the bad one.  Last year, folks suffered through The International, but there was also the enjoyable Duplicity.  That’s not to say that Protection will be terrible, but he also’s doing Trust, which is about a family that’s blindsided when they discover that their daughter is the victim of an online sexual predator.  I’m sure Owen will probably kick some ass in both films, but I think Trust offers a more interesting “Why” than Protection.
