Filming on Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained is gearing up and actor Garrett Dillahunt has the TwitPics to prove it.  The film has been described as a “southern”: a spaghetti western set in the Old South.  Jamie Foxx stars a Django, an escaped slave who goes to rescue his wife (Kerry Washington) from a sadistic plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio) by teaming up with a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz).  As you can see from the photos, the Santa Clarita Melody Ranch looks like the set of a western town, which makes sense since it’s the same set from HBO’s sorely-missed western drama Deadwood, which also stars Dillahunt (in two different roles!).  Tarantino recently told the LA Times, “It’s a blast shooting here. Most other western towns look like dollhouses. This has the complete look. It’s fantastic.”

I haven’t read the script so I don’t know if Django heads out west at some point in the story, but that set looks like a place set in the West rather than the South.  Hit the jump to check out the images.  The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, M.C. Gainey, Dennis Christopher, Gerald McRaney, Laura Cayouette, Don Johnson, Tom Savini, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Joseph Gordon-LevittDjango Unchained opens December 25th.

Quentin Tarantino May Have Found His Editor and Director of Photography for DJANGO UNCHAINED

While everyone’s rightfully excited that Quentin Tarantino is merely weeks away from starting production on his new pic Django Unchained, it’s also a somewhat bittersweet occasion. This will be Tarantino’s first film without beloved editor Sally Menke, who passed away suddenly at the age of 56 last September. Menke worked closely with Tarantino on each of his movies, earning Oscar nominations for her work on Pulp Fiction and Inglourious Basterds. While it’s sad to think that Tarantino won’t be collaborating with Menke on his “Southern”, it appears that he’s settled on an editor for the flick.

The Quentin Tarantino Archives reports that Fred Raskin will be handling editorial duties, with Robert Richardson (Inglourious Basterds) returning as director of photography. Raskin served as assistant editor on both Kill Bill flicks, so he has some experience with Tarantino’s work. His credits as sole editor include Fast Five and Annapolis. Richardson’s return is much welcome, as his stellar resume includes shooting Kill Bill, The Aviator, and Shutter Island, as well as the aforementioned Inglourious Basterds. Django Unchained stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, and Leonardo DiCaprio, and opens on December 25th, 2012.

PULP FICTION Blu-ray Review

by Rob Vaux    Posted: November 9th, 2011 at 8:21 am

What is there to say about Pulp Fiction that hasn’t been said before? Quentin Tarantino’s postmodern masterpiece arrived like a bolt of lightning in 1994 and the cinematic world hasn’t been the same since. It survived a rash of poorly conceived knock-offs, the nearly lethal overexposure of its creator, and a snubbing at the Oscars that ranks among the worst miscarriages of justice ever perpetrated by the Motion Picture Academy. Now, 17 years later, it finally arrives on Blu-ray; time has not tarnished its appeal one iota. Hit the jump for our review of Pulp Fiction on Blu-ray.

Kerry Washington to Play Female Lead in DJANGO UNCHAINED

Quentin Tarantino‘s upcoming film Django Unchained is his spin on the spaghetti western, or as he’s calling it, “A Southern” due to its setting.  The movie focuses on escaped slave Django (Jamie Foxx) and his quest to free his wife Broomhilda from cruel slave owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).  Deadline is now reporting that the wife will be played by the talented Kerry Washington (The Last King of Scotland) .  She’s another addition to an impressive cast, which also features Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, M.C. Gainey, Dennis Christopher, Gerald McRaney, Laura Cayouette, Don Johnson, Tom Savini, and possibly Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  Due to the film’s setting, most of these actors are playing incredibly ugly characters.   The script features three men raping and branding Broomhilda and forced brawls between slaves.

While Broomhilda may seem like a damsel in serious distress, Tarantino is known for writing strong female characters, so hopefully she won’t just be a victim.  Tarantino reportedly had his eye on Washington from the start, but he was also interested in making a discovery, which drew out the casting process for the role.  Washington will next be seen in the dark comedy The Details. Django Unchained is set to open on December 25, 2012.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Talks for Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED

How does Joseph Gordon-Levitt spouting Quentin Tarantino dialogue in an 1800s-set western sound to you? Well, if all goes according to plan, we’ll be able to see just that. Variety reports that Gordon-Levitt is in talks to join Tarantino’s Django Unchained. The pic stars Jamie Foxx as the titular character, a freed slave who sets out with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) on a quest to rescue his wife from an evil plantation owner. Gordon-Levitt’s Inception co-star Leonardo DiCaprio is set as the plantation-owning villain. The actor is keen on taking the role, but he’ll apparently have to sort out several scheduling issues to fit the pic in. He’s currently filming roles in both The Dark Knight Rises and Steven Spielberg’s long-awaited biopic Lincoln.

Production on Tarantino’s pic is set to get underway in New Orleans in January. The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tom Savini and Don Johnson. Django Unchained opens December 25th, 2012.

Kurt Russell in Talks to Replace Kevin Costner in Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED

It looks like Quentin Tarantino may have lined up his replacement for Kevin Costner in Django Unchained. The Wrap reports that Kurt Russell is in talks to take over the role that Costner was forced to vacate due to schedule conflicts: the villainous Ace Woody. The character is in the business of training slaves to fight each other to the death for public amusement in Tarantino’s period pic. The film stars Jamie Foxx as a freed slave who sets out with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to rescue his wife from an evil plantation owner played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Russell previously bared his bad side for Tarantino in the director’s grindhouse flick Death Proof. While it was disappointing to see Costner go, Russell is great casting in the part and I’m exciting to see him go all evil again. Django Unchained opens December 25th, 2012.

Dennis Christopher Joins Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED

Dennis Christopher, star of the terrific 1979 film Breaking Away, has joined the cast of Quentin Tarantino’s southern-style spaghetti western Django Unchained.  Jamie Foxx plays Django, a slave-turned-bounty hunter who goes to rescue his wife from a sadistic slave-master Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio).  According to Variety, Christopher will play Candie’s lawyer, Leo Moguy.  Django Unchained will be Christopher’s first film role in six years although he’s kept busy with TV guest spots on shows such as Criminal Minds and CSI.  If you’re making a return to the big screen, you can’t do much better than a Tarantino film.

The film also stars Christopher’s Deadwood co-star Gerald McRaney, Christoph Waltz as a German bounty who assists Django, and Samuel L. Jackson as Candie’s house slave and right-hand man.  Django Unchained opens December 25, 2012.

Kevin Costner Drops Out of Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: September 15th, 2011 at 7:53 pm

It appears that Kevin Costner won’t be starring in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained after all. The actor was in negotiations to join Tarantino’s controversial western, which takes a harsh look at slavery in the 19th century as told through Tarantino’s oh-so-politically-correct pen, but now Variety’s Justin Kroll reports that the actor had to pass due to scheduling conflicts. Costner was poised to play the villainous role of Ace Woody, a man who trains male slaves to fight for the public’s amusement. Costner recently filmed his role as Clark Kent’s adoptive Earth father in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, and also has the History Channel miniseries The Hatfields and the McCoys and his directorial effort A Little War of Our Own on his plate so those projects may be to blame for the scheduling snafu.

While I was quite looking forward to seeing Costner as a Tarantino-written baddie, Django Unchained is doing just fine casting wise. Jamie Foxx is set as the titular Django, a freed slave who sets out to rescue his wife, while Leonardo DiCaprio will play the film’s main villain, an evil plantation owner. Christoph Waltz, Gerald McRaney, and the recently confirmed Samuel L. Jackson also star. Django Unchained starts production this November in New Orleans and is slated for a December 25th, 2012 release.

Gerald McRaney Joins DJANGO UNCHAINED; Richard Ayoade Picks Up NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

We have a couple of casting bits to bring you tonight. First up, The A-Team‘s Gerald McRaney is in negotiations to join Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming western Django Unchained. If the deal goes through, McRaney (who’ll always be Major Dad to me) will become part of a cast that already includes Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and Kevin Costner. Variety scooped the news of McRaney’s negotiations, while stopping short of divulging any details regarding his potential role. For those unaware, Django Unchained tells the story of a freed slave (Foxx) who undergoes training with a German bounty hunter (Waltz) in preparation of saving his wife from their evil owner (DiCaprio). The film is scheduled to begin shooting in November in time for its scheduled December 25th, 2012 release.

Next up, Richard Ayoade (writer/director Submarine) has joined the cast of director Akiva Schaffer’s (Hot Rod) comedy Neighborhood Watch. Ayoade will star alongside Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Rosemarie DeWitt and Nicholas Braun in the pic which follows a group of neighbors who uncover a conspiracy in the process of “crimestopping.” Although they don’t offer any details regarding Ayoade’s role, Variety reports that Chris Tucker was also being eyed for the part at one point. Neighborhood Watch hits theaters on July 27th, 2012.

Kevin Costner is in negotiations to join Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming western Django Unchained. If the deal goes through, Costner will join a cast that already includes Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, and Samuel L. Jackson. Per Deadline, Costner’s role would be that of the evil Ace Woody, the man responsible for training male slaves to fight for the amusement of the white customers of Candyland. For those new to the program, Django Unchained tells the story of an freed slave (Foxx) who is trained by a German bounty hunter (Waltz) so as to return to the plantation and save his wife from its evil owner (DiCaprio). The film is slated to begin production this fall and will open on December 25th, 2012.

As for Costner, in addition to potentially joining Django, the actor will also make a turn as Clark Kent’s Earthly father, Jonathan Kent, in producer Christopher Nolan and director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. He’s also pulling double duty as a producer/star in The History Channel’s upcoming miniseries Hatfields & McCoys.

Jamie Foxx Confirmed for Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED

Earlier today, we reported on the tweet rumor that Jamie Foxx had landed the title role in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Django Unchained. We now have confirmation on the matter as Variety reports that Foxx will indeed star in the pic alongside Leonard DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, and most likely Samuel L. Jackson as well. As has been well documented, Tarantino originally offered the surefire controversial part to Will Smith. After Smith passed, the writer/director met with Idris Elba, Terrence Howard, and Chris Tucker before offering the gig to Foxx.

For those unaware, Django Unchained centers on a freed slave (Foxx) who joins forces with a German bounty hunter (Waltz) as part of a plan to save the former’s love from an evil plantation owner (DiCaprio). The film is slated to hit theaters on December 25th, 2012. As for Foxx, the Oscar-winner can next be seen alongside Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Jason Sudeikis, and Charlie Day in the comedy Horrible Bosses opening July 8th.

Rumor: Jamie Foxx Lands Lead in Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED?

In this day and age, the multitude of news sources has extended into social media. While Twitter isn’t necessarily the most solid of places to grab news, the credibility of the tweeter (is that the right word? surely not.) must be taken into account. The script for Quentin Tarantino’s new film Django Unchained can be mildly described as controversial. It’s set in the 19th century United States and the lead character is a freed slave. While the role of Django was apparently written for and offered to Will Smith, the ever-image conscious actor seems to have passed and now we’re hearing Jamie Foxx has landed the role. Last night, Jeff Goldsmith tweeted:

“Will Smith is out! Inside sources tell me that Tarantino has chosen Oscar winner @iamjamiefoxx to play Django!”

Now normally this would be taken with a grain of salt, but Goldsmith was also the first to break the news of Leonardo DiCaprio taking on the villain role in the film. While nothing’s confirmed, it could very well be possible that Foxx is now Tarantino’s Django. Hit the jump for more on Django Unchained.

Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED Opens Christmas Day 2012

How cool is your family?  For instance, if the new Quentin Tarantino movie opened on Christmas Day, would you have to ditch the folks for a couple hours, or could you bring them along?  The Weinstein Company will put these family ties to the test with a December 25, 2012 release date for Django Unhcained [Box Office Mojo].  The supporting cast is mostly set: Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, and Leonardo DiCaprio are all on board or about to be barring any sticking points in negotiations.  Much less certain is who will play Django, the freed slave taught the tricks of the trade by a German bounty hunter (Waltz) to liberate his wife from an evil plantation owner (DiCaprio).  Will Smith was the early frontrunner, though a deal has not come easy.  More recently, Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, and Jamie Foxx came up as possible DjangosShowbiz 411 hears Foxx is the closest to the role, but all is heresay until it’s in the trades.  Production is scheduled for later this summer or early fall — with the finish line in place, we’ll meet our Django soon enough.

Christmas Day is a Tuesday in 2012.  As of this writing, Django Unchained has the holiday all to itself, but Hunter Killer, Life of Pi, and The Lone Ranger open the Friday before, December 21.

Leonardo DiCaprio Is Closer to Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED Than Will Smith; Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, Jamie Foxx Rumored for Django

No actor is officially confirmed for Django Unchained, the latest from Quentin Tarantino, but the cast is starting to take shape. According to Deadline, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson are expected to sign on.  Leonardo DiCaprio is about to enter negotiations to play the villain, . That doesn’t give us the titular character, though.  Will Smith was the first major contender for the role of Django, “a slave who is liberated and taught the tricks of the trade by a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter (Waltz).”  Negotiations are stuck in first gear, and we’re probably kidding ourselves to expect the super image-conscious Smith to sign on for such a gleefully controversial role.

Deadline hears Smith likely won’t sign on; possible replacements include Idris Elba, Chris Tucker, and Jamie Foxx.  That’s an eclectic list, somewhere between intriguing and Name Three Black Actors Who Aren’t Will Smith That Headlined Box Office Hits in the Past Decade.  More after the jump:

Chris Nolan and Jon Favreau add their voices to April’s open letter appeal by The National Association of Theater Owners protesting to DirecTV’s new Premium VOD service, Home Premiere. Home Premiere is a video-on-demand service backed by four major studios, Fox, Universal, Warner Bros., and Sony, which provides audiences with the opportunity to rent a new film two months after release, for the price of $29.95. According to THR, the Batman Begins and Iron Man directors are two of the latest signatories to oppose the service among a group of high profile talent including Quentin Tarantino, M. Night Shyamalan and David Dobkin, plus screenwriter Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker) and former president of Warner Home Video, Jim Cardwell.
