We’ve got a couple of casting stories for you this afternoon. First up, Val Kilmer, Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill) and Kate Maberly (Finding Neverland) have joined the cast of D.J. Caruso’s indie The Goats. Based on the young adult novel by Brock Cole, the story centers on two kids who are stranded on Goat Island following a summer camp prank. Rather than return to camp, the duo set out on their own adventure and run away. Chandler Canterbury (Knowing) and Annalise Basso (Bedtime Stories) are set as the two young leads. Variety reports that Kilmer and Mitchell will play parents, with Maberly taking on the role of a camp counselor. Production on Caruso’s passion project began today in Georgia. Hit the jump for the casting news of Toby Kebbel in Zal Batmanglij’s The East, and a synopsis of The Goats.

Carrie-Anne Moss and Malcolm McDowell have joined Adelaide Clemens, Sean Bean, Kit Harington, and Radha Mitchell in the upcoming horror sequel Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.  Moss and McDowell will play Claudia and Leonard Wolf, but the press release doesn’t offer any details on those characters.  For those just tuning in, here’s the synopsis:

For years, Heather Mason (Clemens) and her father (Sean Bean) have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

SILENT HILL Stars Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean and Deborah Kara Unger Return for SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D; New Image Released

Five years ago, the original adaptation of the atmospheric, survival-horror videogame Silent Hill hit theaters with less than blockbusting results. However, since people tend to love multiple sequels to these games-turned-movies (see the Resident Evil series), it’s no surprise that Silent Hill: Revelation 3D has already started filming. Alongside up-and-comers Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington, the sequel will see the return of Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean and Deborah Kara Unger, all of whom played characters who managed to survive to the end of Silent Hill. Here’s the synopsis:

For years, Heather Mason (Clemens) and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. Now on the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by terrifying nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is. The revelation leads her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her in Silent Hill forever.

THE CRAZIES Blu-ray Review

Every once in a while, you’ll hear a disturbing news account of some mild mannered office employee who suddenly opened fire on his coworkers, a quiet student who abruptly turned his classmates into target practice or a nice father who shockingly hacked his family to pieces. The Crazies preys on our fears of these random, unexpected acts of violence, most effectively in its opening sequence, in which a small town father shows up at a local baseball game presumably loaded and carrying a loaded weapon.  More after the jump:

THE CRAZIES Review

Breck Eisner’s The Crazies might make you believe something this hellacious isn’t just a work of far-flung fiction, but a possible reality. For a Hollywood horror film, that is quite a feat when the weird seems to gush from the wounds of multi-million dollar projects that often strive for shock over true substance or coherency. Eisner, working off of George A. Romero’s 1973 original The Crazies, uses a believable story with the required scares and thrills without succumbing to sheer absurdity or grotesque violence. By using focused and tight camerawork, a narrative that is easy to follow, and quality acting, Eisner delivers a worthy entry in the horror genre that is a pleasure from start to finish, even for non-genre fans.

Sizzle Reel for THE CRAZIES Starring Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson, and Danielle Panabaker

A sizzle reel for Breck Eisner’s upcoming horror film The Crazies has just gone up online and it’s pretty damn cool.  For those who don’t know, a sizzle reel is a combination of a featurette with a trailer. You don’t see any behind-the-scenes stuff, but you have the actors talking about the film, while some really intense action is happening on screen.  I’m hearing good things about the movie, which is terrific since 90% of mainstream horror movies seem to phone in it these days.

Hit the jump to check out the sizzle reel along with the official synopsis.  Also, you can click here to read an interview with Danielle Panabaker, click here to read an interview with Breck Eisner, and click here to read my set report from last year.

The Crazies hits theaters tomorrow.  Look for Bill Graham’s review later tonight.

New Banners for THE CRAZIES Will Not Benefit Ogden Marsh’s Tourism Industry

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 12th, 2010 at 1:18 pm

slice_crazies_movie_banner_poster_01.jpg

Overture has provided us with three new banners for their upcoming horror flick The Crazies and I’m not sure if they’re the best way to promote Ogden Marsh, the setting of the film.  They say, “Welcome to Ogden Marsh, the friendliest place on Earth,” but that’s pretty difficult to believe.  For starters, have they compared Ogden Marsh to every other place on Earth?  And how do you measure “friendliest”?  This is a highly dubious promotion.  Oh, and the people they put on the posters appear to have a vascular problem and they’re wielding wrenches, pitchforks, and guns.  This may also be a bit of a turn-off to potential visitors.

Based off the 1973 George Romero film of the same name, The Crazies is directed by Breck Eisner, and stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Joe Anderson, and Danielle Panabaker. Hit the jump to check out all three banners along with the official synopsis.  The Crazies hits theaters on February 26th.

New Trailer for THE CRAZIES Starring Timothy Olyphant

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 11th, 2009 at 9:22 pm

slice_crazies_2010_poster_01.jpg

Yahoo! Movies has premiered a new trailer for Breck Eisner’s remake of George Romero’s 1973 horror film, The Crazies.  The film stars Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood), Radha Mitchell (Surrogates), Joe Anderson (Across the Universe), and Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th, 2009) as the unfortunate residents of a town where residents are inexplicably turning, to quote Robert Downey Jr. in Zodiac, “a tad bit fuckered in the head.”  I was lucky enough to get to go to the set this past March where I saw some cool stuff, especially in terms of the special effects make-up, which is important when you’re making a gruesome horror movie.  You can click here to read my full set report where I go in depth about the make-up and how time stops when in you’re in a high school classroom no matter how old you are.

Hit the jump to check out the new trailer along with the official synopsis.  The Crazies hits theaters on February 26, 2010.

THE CRAZIES Trailer

Zombies are back, though I’m not sure they ever left. On the eve of Zombieland hitting theaters, a trailer for “The Crazies” has finally gone live. As we reported on Wednesday, the film is a remake of a 1973 George Romero film of the same name. The remake stars Timothy Olyphant and takes place in a small Iowa town where a toxin contaminates the water supply, turning everyone completely crazy. The trailer and my thoughts on it after the jump.

New Poster for THE CRAZIES, a Romero Remake

by Jeffrey Van Camp    Posted: September 28th, 2009 at 7:21 pm

The Crazies movie poster slice.jpg

If you like zombies, you’re in luck! Well, kind of. Director Breck Eisner is stepping up to remake “The Crazies,” a 1973 George Romero film, and we’ve got the new poster. The remake takes place in a small Iowa town (as opposed to a small Pennsylvania town in the original) where a toxin contaminates the water supply, turning everyone completely crazy. In the original, the contamination is caused by a government biological weapon, and the gov’t comes back to try and clean up the mess. The new film is based “loosely” on the original, so it’s hard to say what will and won’t change. More after the jump.

SURROGATES Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: September 24th, 2009 at 8:43 pm

slice_surrogates_movie_bruce_willis_01.jpg

“Surrogates” is science fiction the way that Hollywood does science fiction–with no subtlety whatsoever.  The opening credits of the film do a great job in describing how our world was changed by “surrogates”, synthetic representations of real humans who control their surrogate remotely and live out their lives the same way.  The comment is loud and clear: our reliance on communication technology like the Internet or personal interaction via online avatars diminish the human experience and make us disconnected from each other.  And if we’re all living as creepy, pore-less RealDolls, then yeah, I can agree with that.  But the best science fiction doesn’t make a statement but asks questions.  “Surrogates” already has the answer before the opening credits are over.
