Rapunzel

Trailer for TANGLED Starring Zachary Levi and Mandy Moore; Plus 6 High-Resolution Images

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 10th, 2010 at 10:42 am

For those who don’t know, Tangled was originally called Rapunzel.  But after The Princess and the Frog failed to attract the coveted demographic of young boys due to the word “princess” in its title, Rapunzel became Tangled.  The first trailer for the film continues that trend.  Most of it is devoted not to the long-haired princess, but to the roguish “Flynn Rider” who gets all the jokes, charm, and comes off like he’s the main character.  He’s amusing and I think Zachary Levi does a splendid job of voicing the character (you won’t hear Chuck Bartowski), but I’m fascinated how they’re trying to make sure it doesn’t come off like a “girl’s movie” because apparently that’s the worst thing ever.

I’m also a little surprised that at the look of the film because the CG on French Rococo artist Jean-Honore Fragonard’s painting “The Swing”.  Instead, it just looks like a standard animated CG movie.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer along with six high-resolution images and judge for yourself.  Tangled hits theaters in 3D on November 24th.

Last week, Curt Holman of Creative Loafing [Atlanta], Russ Fischer of /Film, and I discussed Clash of the Titans, How to Train Your Dragon, and the quality of 3D in both films.  To quickly summarize, we ragged on Clash like crazy, Curt and I gushed about Dragon (Russ hasn’t seen it yet), and how 3D made Clash even worse while Dragon should be viewed in IMAX 3D if at all possible.  Our conversation about How to Train Your Dragon also led us to talking about how studios try to appeal to appeal to both boys and girls with family films.  Specifically, Disney changed the title of Rapunzel to Tangled based off the lackluster box-office of The Princess and the Frog.

Disney Animation Studios is getting a bit clever with the title for the next film as Producer Roy Conli has announced [via Facebook] that their 2010 film will no longer be called Rapunzel and will now be known as Tangled.  Here’s what Conli had to say:

“Hey everyone, I’m Roy Conli, producer of Disney’s next animated film. I have some exciting news to share, and it was important to me that YOU guys – the Disney fans – hear it first. I want to tell you about Walt Disney Animation Studio’s 2010 release, Tangled. It’s a really fresh, smart take on the Rapunzel story.  In our film, the infamous bandit Flynn Rider meets his match in the girl with the 70 feet of magical golden hair. We’re having a lot of fun pairing Flynn, who’s seen it all, with Rapunzel, who’s been locked away in a tower for 18 years.  I’m so proud of the crew working on this film – they’re doing a fantastic job creating an awesome story with great characters and a stunning world – and it’s all going to look amazing in 3D. All of us here at the studio are incredibly excited for you to see Tangled when it comes out in theaters this November.”

Hit the jump for more details on the film including the style of animation they’re using.  Tangled is slated to hit theaters on November 24th.

By this time next year, you’ll be seeing Disney’s take on the old German fairy tale Rapunzel in theaters, but for now you can analyze this new image from the film. Walt Disney Animation studios promises that with Rapunzel, “you will be transported to a world complete with iconic tower, an evil witch, a gallant hero and, of course, the mysterious girl with the long golden tresses”. Like so many animated features these days, Rapunzel has a stellar voice cast including Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Matthew Gray Gubler, David Schwimmer, John Goodman, David Cross, Jason Alexander, and Carol Burnett.  Hit the jump for more:

Zachary Levi Talks CHUCK Season 3 and Walt Disney’s RAPUNZEL

by Sara Wayland    Posted: December 5th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

chuck_nbc_tv_show__4_.jpgWhile promoting his role in the feature film Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel at the press day, Zachary Levi also took some time to talk about his day job, the NBC action-comedy series Chuck, returning in January 2010.

Excited to be on the air earlier than the originally planned March start time, and with an additional six episodes added to the 13 that were first ordered, the actor says that he’s not turning his back on television now that he’s working his way into film roles.

Zachary Levi will also be heard as a voice in Disney’s next animated princess feature, Rapunzel, set for 2010, about the long-haired beauty (voiced by Mandy Moore) who has spent her entire life in a tower until she falls in love with a bandit (voiced by Levi) for whom she must venture into the outside world for the first time to find.

With John Lasseter in London promoting upcoming Disney projects and D23 about to happen in California, I knew a lot of Disney news was about to break. So it really shouldn’t surprise me to see all these Disney stories this morning.

Anyway, the latest is Zachary Levi (“Chuck”) and Mandy Moore will be providing the lead voices for Walt Disney’s digital 3D-animated musical action-adventure “Rapunzel”. The film is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale and it’s due for release in late 2010 with music from Oscar winner Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast”, “Aladdin”). New Image from Disney’s Upcoming Animated Film RAPUNZEL

A new image from Disney’s upcoming 3D computer-animated film “Rapunzel” has just landed online.  That’s right: computer-animated.  Even though the image above appears-hand drawn, it’s non-photorealistic rendering technique so the surface looks like it’s painted but there’s still the depth and dimension you’d expect from a 3D computer-animated film. The movie’s visual style is being based on French Rococo artist Jean-Honore Fragonard’s painting “The Swing”.  Hit the jump to check out the new image where we see Rapunzel apparently enjoy yellow circles and bondage.

Disney to Show Off TRON, PRINCE OF PERSIA, THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE, and More at D23 Expo

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 3rd, 2009 at 12:49 pm

d23_expo_poster_01.jpgHow much money and power does Disney have?  Enough that they can hold their own damn convention to show off all their own product.  Other studios have to share the stage at some rag-tag event like the San Diego Comic Con while Disney, rolling around in Jonas Brothers and “High School Musical” money, can go to the Anaheim Convention Center, and show off all of their shit. (That’s going to be slogan by the way: “D23 Expo: Check Out Our Shit”)

The D23 Expo (the “23″ commemorates the fourth through twenty-third “Mighty Ducks” movies that never were) will offer looks at ABC’s upcoming shows, behind-the-scenes look at what’s coming to Disney theme parks, a look at Disney’s history and their classic films, but who cares about all that.

What’s going to bring a slew of journalists to Anaheim from September 10th through the 13th is that Disney will be offering first looks at “The Princess and the Frog”, “Rapunzel”, “isney’s A Christmas Carol”, “Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland”, “TRON”, “Toy Story 3″, “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”.  As someone who probably won’t be attending this conference (since I don’t live in California), I’m a little worried as to what this means for what Disney will bring to humble Comic-Con.
