A new clip from director Andrew Dominik’s (The Assassination of Jesse James) crime drama Killing Them Softly has been released.  The film stars Brad Pitt as a mob enforcer who’s tasked with investigating the robbery of a high-stakes poker game.  The pic premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this week to a widlly enthusiastic response, and apparently Dominik has crafted the crime drama as a not-so-subtle critique of capitalism.  We got a look at the excellent minimalist teaser poster a few days ago, and this clip features a funny scene between Pitt’s character and Richard Jenkins in which the title of the film becomes crystal clear.  If you missed the Ray Liotta-enhanced first clip from the film, click here.

Hit the jump to watch the clip.  The film also stars James Gandolfini, Richard Jenkins, Richard Jenkins, Ben Mendelsohn, Scoot McNairy, Bella Heathcote, and Sam ShepardKilling Them Softly opens on September 21st.

Get a Good Look at The White Board from THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

Since the filmmakers have made it known that they wish for people to go into The Cabin in the Woods as spoiler-free as possible, I’m going to be incredibly vague here on the front page.  Needless to say, if you’ve seen the movie then you’re aware of a certain White Board.  An image of The White Board has gone online, and we’ve got it after the jump for your viewing pleasure.  If you haven’t seen the movie, I highly, highly suggest you do so.  Director Drew Goddard and co-writer Joss Whedon have crafted a brilliant take on the horror genre that is some of the most fun you’ll have at the movies this year.

If you’ve seen The Cabin in the Woods, hit the jump to check out the image.  Again, spoilers for the film are obviously after the jump.

Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins Talk THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, LIBERAL ARTS and THE WEST WING

As I’ve said all week, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard‘s The Cabin in the Woods is one of the best “horror” movies I’ve ever seen, and it’s easily one of my favorite films this year.  While many of you might love the horror genre, I find it repetitive and stale.  It seems like the genre is stuck in neutral, and no one is making any progress forward.  But that all changed after I saw Cabin in the Woods.  Without spoiling anything, let’s just say the film turns “horror” on its head, and I loved every second of it.

At this year’s SXSW, I got to talk with the cast and filmmakers for both our partners at Omelete and Collider.  Over the past few days I’ve posted my interviews with Joss Whedon/Drew Goddard and Anna Hutchison, Jesse Williams & Kristen Connolly.  Today I’ve got Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. During the interview we talked about premiering at SXSW, Joss Whedon, rehearsals, how much changed on set, how did they get involved in the project, Liberal Arts, The West Wing, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to check it out.

I want to make this very clear: Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard‘s The Cabin in the Woods is one of the best “horror” movies I’ve ever seen, and it’s easily one of my favorite films this year. Trust me when I say: Stop watching the trailers.  Don’t watch any TV spots.  Do not read the reviews.  Just go see the film on opening day next week (and then read Matt’s glowing review).  I promise, it’s worth the price of admission, and after you see it, you’ll want to see it again.

At this year’s SXSW, I got to talk with the cast and filmmakers for both our partners at Omelete and Collider.  Over the next week, I’ll be posting a new interview each day.  Today’s is  Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford.  During the interview we talked about premiering the film at SXSW, working with Whedon and Goddard, preparing for dancing on screen, and more. 12 Actors Who Should Be in ANCHORMAN 2

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 29th, 2012 at 1:07 pm

anchorman-2-actors-slice

Yesterday came the joyous news that we would finally be getting a sequel to Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.  We know that Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, and Steve Carell will all be reprising their lovably buffoonish character, Adam McKay will return to the director’s chair, and filming is set to begin in February.  If Anchorman 2 returns with only people from the original cast, I have no problem with that.  But sequels usually bring new faces, so I’ve compiled a list of 12 actors who would fit well within the Anchorman universe.  Keep in mind: I have no idea what the plot will be, or if there will be roles for these actors, and how radically McKay will change the look of the first movie.  The Legend of Ron Burgundy has a goofy 70s vibe, but it’s possible they’ll reset the time and place (the first movie ends with Ron and Veronica leaving San Diego to become worldwide news anchors).  Also, I’m not saying that all of these actors should be in the movie.  I’m just saying I can see them fitting into an Anchorman sequel.

Hit the jump for my criteria on making the list and who made the cut.

SXSW 2012: THE CABIN IN THE WOODS Review

The Cabin in the Woods is one of the sharpest satires of the horror genre ever made.  Great satire can only come from intelligent, witty, and devious minds.  Director Drew Goddard and his co-writer Joss Whedon have those minds.  They have dissected not just the “cabin in the woods” sub-genre, but the entire horror genre, and most importantly, our enjoyment of it.  Rather than just point out the tired clichés we all know, Goddard and Whedon use the deconstruction as a starting point rather than a dull summation.   It is an exciting, exhilarating, and bloody means to a thoughtful, rewarding, and bloody end.

Exclusive: First Poster for DARLING COMPANION Starring Kevin Kline and Diane Keaton

We’re happy to debut the first poster for the drama Darling Companion.  The film stars Diane Keaton as woman who saves a lost dog and quickly forms a bond with the debraggled animal.  When her self-involved husband, played by Kevin Kline, loses the dog, they form a search party with a few remaining guests at their house and set out to find the animal.  The crux of the plot comes from how the members of the search party are affected by the rescue adventure, and the impressive cast includes Mark Duplass, Richard Jenkins, Elizabeth Moss, Dianne Wiest, and Sam Shepard.  Given that The Big Chill director Lawrence Kasdan is behind the pic, I think we can safely assume we’re in for an ensemble film that’s equal parts drama and comedy.

Hit the jump to check out the poster debut.  Darling Companion opens in limited release on April 20th.

New Trailer for THE CABIN IN THE WOODS

A new trailer for the horror film The Cabin in the Woods has gone online. Directed by Drew Goddard and written by Goddard and Joss Whedon, the film takes the horror genre and turns it on its head as five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods where bad things start happening. The logline is simple, but the buzz on this film is incredibly positive. I’ve been told that the movie’s twists and turns are best left as surprises, so I’m pretty in the dark about what exactly happens in this cabin in the woods. Needless to say, I’m incredibly excited to go into the film relatively cold. This trailer is much more along the lines of your typical horror film that the first trailer, but I don’t necessarily think that’s a bad thing. The big sell for movie fans is the involvement of Whedon and Goddard, but this trailer should appeal to the average moviegoer who’s up for two hours of good ol’ fashioned horror fun.

Hit the jump to check out the new trailer. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Connolly, Anna Hutchinson, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Bradley Whitford, and Richard Jenkins. The film opens on April 13th, but our own Matt Goldberg will have a review from the film’s premiere at SXSW this Friday.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead Joins Adam Scott in A.C.O.D.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead has joined Adam Scott, Jane Lynch, and Richard Jenkins in the comedy A.C.O.D. The title stands for “Adult Children of Divorce”, and the plot centers on a guy (Scott) who has been caught in his parents’ ugly divorce of the past twenty years, and matters become even worse when his brother gets engaged.  Then the details of the feud are revealed in a definitive new book on children of divorce.  According to Deadline, Winstead will be the rock and long-time girlfriend of Scott’s character.  Stuart Zicherman will make his directing debut on a script he co-wrote with Ben Karlin (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart).

Winstead gave one of the more buzzed-about performances coming out Sundance this year with her captivating dramatic turn as an alcoholic in Smashed, but she’s been crushing it in movies for a while now.  She’s convincingly played a bad-ass in The Thing, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and Live Free or Die Hard, and I’m excited to see how she’ll play off Scott, Jenkins, and Lynch in a comedy.  Winstead will next be seen playing Mary Todd Lincoln in the action flick Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Paul Giamatti, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Hader and More Join Voice Cast for TURBO; Plus a Teaser Image from the Film

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: February 23rd, 2012 at 5:57 pm

DreamWorks Animation has assembled its ginormous ensemble voice cast for the snail-centered film Turbo. Ryan Reynolds is already onboard to voice the protagonist, an ordinary garden snail who obtains extraordinary speed through a freak accident and sets out to race in the Indianapolis 500. Now Heat Vision reports that (deep breath) Paul Giamatti, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Hader, Michael Pena, Luis Guzmán, Richard Jenkins, Ken Jeong, Michelle Rodriguez, Maya Rudolph, Ben Schwartz, Kurtwood Smith, and Snoop Dogg are set to join the cast. David Soren is directing from a script he co-wrote with Robert Siegel (The Wrestler) and Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After).

I love the voice cast here but I’m not wild about the premise. Pixar already tried to do a movie set in the professional racing world twice to less than stellar results, and this new teaser image doesn’t exactly alleviate any of my concerns. It should be said that it’s still early in the animation process and this image doesn’t exactly reflect the finished film, but I certainly don’t think it’s a great start. Hit the jump to check out the image for yourself. Turbo is slated for July 19th, 2013.

5 New Images from COGAN’S TRADE Starring Brad Pitt

Five new images from Cogan’s Trade have gone online.  Based on the novel by George V. Higgins and written and directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford), the film stars Brad Pitt as Jackie Cogan, a mob enforcer who must investigate the robbery of a high-stakes poker game.  The film also stars Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini (both looking like they’ve slipped back into mob-mode), Richard Jenkins, Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom), Scott McNairy (Monsters), Bella Heathcote (In Time), and Sam Shepard.  With Dominik at the helm and this spectacular cast, Cogan’s Trade is one of my must-see movies of the year.  Although no release date has been announced, I’d be surprised if The Weinstein Company didn’t set the film loose on the festival circuit this fall.  Hit the jump to check out the images.

First Trailer for DARLING COMPANION Starring Kevin Kline, Diane Keaton, and Mark Duplass

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 23rd, 2012 at 11:25 am

The first trailer for director Lawrence Kasdan’s (The Big Chill) latest feature Darling Companion has gone online. The story centers on a woman (Diane Keaton) who saves an abandoned dog on the side of the highway. She brings the dog back to her home, where her husband (Kevin Kline) proceeds to lose it. The two round up a few remaining guests staying at their home and set out on a search. This is one of the strangest and most perplexing trailers I’ve come across in quite some time. The tone is all over the place, and I can’t pin down what the story is really about. Is it more in the vein of Marley and Me, Something’s Gotta Give, or Homeward Bound? I genuinely don’t know. The cast is fantastic, which gives me hope, but I’m a bit baffled by this trailer.

Hit the jump to check it out for yourself. The film also stars Mark Duplass, Richard Jenkins, Elizabeth Moss, Dianne Wiest, and Sam Shepard. Darling Companion opens in limited release April 20th.

(Adult Children Of Divorce)Ben Karlin (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) wrote the script, which centers on a guy (Scott) who has been caught in his parents’ ugly divorce of the past twenty years, and matters become even worse when his brother gets engaged.  Then the details of the feud are revealed in a definitive new book on children of divorce.  According to Deadline, Jenkins will play the father, “whose uncompromising lifestyle and vehement distaste for his ex-wife threatens to destroy the wedding.”  I can see the relation seeing as both Jenkins and Scott are both hilarious scene-stealers. If this is the kind of talent that the movie is attracting, I can’t wait to find out who they cast as the mother and brother.  Filming begins in March.

Hit the jump for casting news on By Virtue Fall, the directorial debut of Up in the Air co-writer Sheldon Turner.
