Author Cormac McCarthy’s first screenplay is looking like it’s on the fast track to production. McCarthy, whose books have been adapted into such fantastic films as No Country for Old Men and The Road, sold the spec screenplay The Counselor last month, and a multitude of directors jumped at the chance to take the helm. Ridley Scott entered talks a few weeks ago, and now Deadline reports that Scott is confirmed to make The Counselor his next film. Furthermore, Scott is apparently talking to his Prometheus star Michael Fassbender about starring in the drama.

The story is described as “No Country for Old Men on steroids” and centers on a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe in to the drug business without getting sucked down. He soon finds he’s in over his head and tries his best to get out of a desperate situation. Apparently a number of top actors are vying for roles in the pic, and Scott hopes to begin production on May 1st. Fassbender is a tremendous actor, and the idea of him tackling Cormac material is certainly exciting. He’s next set to reteam with Shame director Steve McQueen on the period drama Twelve Years a Slave. I sincerely hope he’s able to fit both films into his schedule.

Ridley Scott Confirms that Harrison Ford Isn’t in Talks for BLADE RUNNER Sequel

A couple days ago, Alcon Entertainment debunked the rumor that Harrison Ford might return for Ridley Scott’s sequel to Blade RunnerEntertainment Weekly, not content to trust the people who are financing the movie, spoke to Scott to double-check that Ford wasn’t really in it.  Guess what: Ford isn’t in it.  Scott explains that they don’t even have a script, so he doesn’t know if there’s even a place for replicant detective Rick Deckard.  But Scott, exercising common sense, wouldn’t rule out the possibility of trying to bring Ford back if that’s what the script calls for.

The Blade Runner sequel is ways off, folks.  If you’re eager for a Ridley Scott sci-fi return, look forward to Prometheus.

Oren Moverman‘s star has continued to rise since The Messenger and Rampart (along with his assorted screenwriter-only credits), and he’s eyeing a variety of projects for his next movie.  According to The Playlist, one of the films in the mix is The Big Blow, a complex drama with intertwining plot threads that revolve around the devastating September 4, 1900 hurricane in Gavelston, Texas.  Ridley and Tony Scott‘s Scott Free production company has had the rights to Joe Lansdale‘s novella for almost a decade.  A few years ago, Moverman was brought on to do further work on the late Millard Kaufman‘s screenplay, and now Moverman has moved into the director’s chair. Hit the jump for more details on the project.

Harrison Ford Not in Talks for BLADE RUNNER Sequel Says Alcon Entertainment

Contrary to previous reports that Harrison Ford was in talks to possibly reprise his role (in cameo form or something else) in Ridley Scott’s new Blade Runner movie, we’re now hearing definitive reports from producer/financier Alcon Entertainment that this is untrue. Andrew Kosove, speaking on behalf of himself and his Alcon Entertainment partner Broderick Johnson, said they wanted to put a stop to the rumor of Ford’s return to the film. While it’s still a go that Scott will return to direct, this new denial falls into line with previous reports and comments from Ford himself. Hit the jump for more.

Ridley Scott in Talks to Direct Cormac McCarthy’s THE COUNSELOR

Director Ridley Scott is adding yet another project to his ever-increasing pile, but this one is poised to be his next film. Just over a week ago we reported that author Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men) had turned in his very first spec screenplay entitled The Counselor. The news was exciting as the Pulitzer Prize-winning author is one of the great voices of our time, and now Deadline reports that Scott plans to bring the film to fruition. The story centers on “a respected lawyer who thinks he can dip a toe in to the drug business without getting sucked down. It is a bad decision and he tries his best to survive it and get out of a desperate situation.”

Scott plans to make The Counselor his next project after he finishes up post-production on this summer’s Prometheus. He certainly wasn’t lacking for potential projects to choose from, as he was mulling over a Gertrude Bell biopic with Angelina Jolie and the thriller Child 44. Scott previously stated that the Blade Runner remake would be his next pic, but it appears he’s chosen McCarthy’s drama instead. I’m quite looking forward to seeing him return to the sci-fi genre with Prometheus, but it’ll be interesting to see him bring McCarthy’s voice to life.

Images from Syd Mead and Ridley Scott’s Out-of-Print BLADE RUNNER Sketchbook

Blade Runner was released almost 30 years ago, but it seems like new material will always continue to surface, and now director Ridley Scott and production designer Syd Mead’s out-of-print Blade Runner sketchbook has gone online.  It would cost you hundreds of dollars to buy a used version, but some good-hearted human being has decided to take his rare copy, scan the pages, and post them online.  I haven’t watched Blade Runner in years so I don’t really have any favorite images from the sketchbook (although I can certainly continue to appreciate Mead’s brilliant designs).  But for fans of Scott’s classic sci-fi flick, this a must-see.

Hit the jump to read the entire book, which includes artwork for sequences and concepts that were never filmed (like Tyrell’s Cyrpto-Crypt and Zhora’s Orgasma Mask).  Scott plans to revisit the world of Blade Runner for his next movie, and he says “it’s liable to be a sequel.”

First Trailer for Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 22nd, 2011 at 8:44 am

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for Prometheus, a sci-fi project from director Ridley Scott with ties to the Alien series.  Here’s the logline: “The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.”  This is very much a teaser, as it focuses much more on mood than showcasing whole scenes. We don’t even really get a good look at any of the stars, but that’s inconsequential because the trailer does a damn fine job of sending chills down your spine regardless. If there was any doubt about the film’s connection to Alien, that’ll be put to rest after watching this trailer (the title appearance is fantastic). This marks a return not only to the sci-fi genre for Scott, but to horror, and I couldn’t be happier.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and also Guy Pearce star. Prometheus is scheduled for release on June 8, 2012.

Trailer Preview for Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS [Updated with a Second Preview Trailer]

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 19th, 2011 at 11:11 am

A trailer for the trailer for Ridley Scott’s sci-fi pic Prometheus is now online. It’s a 30 second “trailer preview” for the actual trailer that will be released online this Thursday. It’s pretty similar to the footage we saw at Comic-Con, as it has some behind-the-scenes footage (as well as a tiny bit of actual footage) interspersed with Scott talking about the film on set (though the grainy stylistic flourish is a tad confusing). It ups the horror aspect of the flick, something I was extremely happy with when we saw the Comic-Con footage. As it has connections to Scott’s Alien, it really does look like he’s drawing from the horror tone of that pic instead of simply making a sci-fi actioner. While Scott recently stated that the xenomorph will “absolutely not” appear in Prometheus, I’m excited to see what sort of being will pop up in its place.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer preview, and come back to the site on Thursday to view the full-length trailer. The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, and Guy Pearce. Prometheus opens June 8th, 2012. [Update: a second trailer preview has been released that shows even more footage from the film. It's included after the jump.]

Ridley Scott Provides a Few New Details on PROMETHEUS; Says the Xenomorph Will “Absolutely Not” Appear in the Movie

Fox has done a pretty good job of keeping the lid on Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus.  Of course, everything will likely be known a month before the film opens, but for now: mystique!  The movie still indirectly ties in to Alien by exploring the mystery of the Space Jockey (the giant dead creature found by the crew of the Nostromo in the first act).  Says Scott:

Yeah, so there you have that… I always thought it was amazing that no one ever asked who he was, and why was he there? What was all that about? I sat thinking about this for a while and thought, “Well, there’s a story! And the other four [films] missed it!” So, here it is.

Hit the jump for more on what he had to say about the prequel/not-a-prequel, and why he removed the famous xenomorphs from the equation.  Prometheus opens June 8, 2012 and stars Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, and Michael Fassbender.

Hi-Res Teaser Poster for PROMETHEUS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: December 14th, 2011 at 11:30 am

promethesus-movie-poster-teaser-slice-01

As you may have noticed, summer 2012 movies are getting marketed like crazy as audiences head to the multiplex over the holidays.  We’ve recently had at least one trailer every day this week for a summer film, and posters usually come along with the package.  We haven’t gotten a trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus (or anything beyond these images), but a poster for the film may have gone online.  Collider reader John sent us a link to a snapped photo of what could be the film’s teaser poster.  It looks legit, especially since there’s no MPAA rating on the bottom.  Fakes usually carry that even though the film hasn’t come close to being screened and rated by the MPAA.

If it is the poster, it’s serviceable.  There’s nothing to imply the connection to Alien (or Alien‘s DNA), but the poster lets you know it’s sci-fi and the movie arrives June 8, 2012.  I can’t make out the tagline, but we’ll update the story when the official version is release.  Hit the jump to check out the poster.  The 3D film stars Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, and Guy Pearce. [Update: The poster was the real deal.  You can check out the official, hi-res version after the jump.]

New Look at Images from Ridley Scott’s PROMETHEUS

PROMETHEUS-monolith-slice

A week ago, we brought you an early look at scans from Ridley Scott’s new Alien-“prequel” Prometheus. They showed actors Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) and Logan Marshall-Green (Devil) in their luminescent-collared spacesuits exploring what looked like ruins of an unknown planet. They also showed stars Charlize Theron (Hancock) and Idris Elba (Thor) on the bridge of the eponymous ship. Lording over the explorers in the background was a monolithic face looking down on a field of what appear to be primitive versions of Alien eggs down in the fog. Well now we can show you all of that in more clarity, along with a couple of new images from the film. With clearer images available, a trailer should be right around the corner. Prometheus opens in 3D on June 8th, 2012. Hit the jump to check out the images.

I did it, folks. I came, saw, and survived yet another Black Friday. This year’s destination of choice was my local Best Buy and I sat outside in moderately chilly temperatures for around six hours for one lonely purpose: to buy things for cheaper than what they were the day before. That’s right, I rocked Best Buy to the tune of two seasons of television on DVD for a combined $15. Now, I know some of you reading this may be thinking, “Wait, Jason waited outside for six hours so that he could buy two seasons of TV on DVD?”. My answer: a resounding “Yes!”. It’s the small things, people. The small things.

But enough of my Black Friday exploits. In this week’s “Top 5″ installment you’ll find interviews for this weekend’s openers The Muppets and Hugo, new images and plot details from The Dark Knight Rises, new images from Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, and Gary Oldman and Colin Firth addressing Akira and Oldboy remake rumors. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

Ridley Scott and Gerard Butler Team Up for Fact-Based Mercenary Pic

Although director Ridley Scott is currently busy with the production of Alien-pseudo-prequel, Prometheus, that doesn’t stop him from taking on new projects. Especially when that project stars Gerard Butler (300) as a former British Army officer who puts together a group of mercenaries to attempt a coup against an African nation’s government. Scott is attached to direct and produce the thriller based on the real-life exploits of Simon Mann. The script, written by Robert Edwards (The Bomb in My Garden) will follow Mann through the failed coup, his imprisonment and eventual pardoning. Hit the jump for more.

Angelina Jolie Attached to Middle East Biopic GERTRUDE BELL; Ridley Scott May Direct

Angelina Jolie is set to premiere her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey next month, but the actress is also looking towards future acting gigs. Fresh off the Bosnian War-set Honey, Jolie is eyeing another socially conscious pic: a biopic of Gertrude Bell. Jolie has attached herself to the project, titled Gertrude Bell, which centers on the early 20th century pioneer. Described as the female Lawrence of Arabia, Bell worked extensively in the middle east and was responsible for establishing what would become the modern framework for Jordan and Iraq. She worked for British Intelligence during World War I, and was key in the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire and subsequent founding of Iraq. Hit the jump for more, including Ridley Scott’s involvement and what projects the director is considering for his next film.

Ridley Scott Says the Last 8 Minutes of PROMETHEUS Evolve into the ALIEN DNA

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 7th, 2011 at 7:32 am

It’s been fun calling Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus an Alien prequel/not-prequel.  The movie started out as a straight-up prequel to his classic 1979 sci-fi horror film, but then turned into something of a quasi-spin-off when Scott said back in January, “The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA.”  In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy blog, Scott says the last eight minutes of Prometheus will evolve into “a pretty good DNA of the Alien one.”

Hit the jump for more on what Scott had to say about the film plus my speculation on what will happen in the last eight minutes.  The film stars Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Idris Elba, and Guy PearcePrometheus opens in 3D on June 8, 2012.
