THE TOURNAMENT Blu-ray Review

by Ben Begley    Posted: January 1st, 2011 at 6:59 am

the-tournament-slice

The Tournament comes out of the gates guns blazing/blood splattering and for 90 minutes keeps that momentum going.  It is one of those rare straight-to-DVD action films that avoids looking super low budget and lame, features a cast of pretty well-known actors and a contains a heaping helping of blood, bullets, as well as some awesome stunts.  But is there some higher meaning to the film or any redeeming qualities outside of mindless violence?

Find out in my Blu-ray review, after the jump.

SyFy Has Officially Canceled STARGATE UNIVERSE

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: December 16th, 2010 at 1:17 pm

stargate_universe_slice_01

The series seemed to be in danger for the past few weeks, but now it’s official. Today SyFy announced they have canceled Stargate Universe and will not renew the series for a third season. As of now this marks the end of the long-running series of TV adaptation which essentially created a Stargate franchise which all started with just one feature film in 1994. SyFy has really been killing the dreams of sci-fi TV fans this year, especially with their recent cancellation of Caprica and a seemingly mediocre American adaptation of Being Human taking up precious airtime instead. Surely plenty of longtime fans aren’t going to be happy about this, so feel free to sound off below.

UPDATE: As of now, Syfy plans on airing the last ten episodes early next year.  They had already been shot before today’s series cancellation.  That means the last episode is most likely going to end without resolution.

Elyse Levesque Exclusive On Set Interview STARGATE UNIVERSE

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: November 1st, 2010 at 12:15 pm

At the beginning of September, I was invited – along with a few others – to the Vancouver set of Stargate Universe.  While you may have thought I was done posting on set interviews, I’ve got one more and it’s with Elyse Levesque.

During the interview, Levesque talks about all the changes her character (Chloe Armstrong) goes through during season two.  In addition, we talked about filming on the incredible sets of the Destiny ship, what’s her process with getting scripts, and we even covered social media like Twitter and Facebook.  It’s a very relaxed interview that was done in one of the Destiny hallways. Check it out after the jump:

STARGATE UNIVERSE The Complete First Season DVD Review

Stargate Universe image slice

As a huge fan of SyFy’s Stargate SG-1 (particularly the Richard Dean-Anderson era), I was very much looking forward to Stargate Universe. The Stargate Atlantis spinoff had always seemed like it was trying to hard to be like its predecessor and Universe looked to be a great turnaround from that. The Lost and Battlestar Galactica-like vibes of the show, on paper, looked like it could work. Universe doesn’t begin to touch either of those shows, or even SG-1 for that matter, but the first season does make large strides towards creating its own identity in an already incredibly elaborate universe.  Hit the jump for my review of Stargate Universe.

Exclusive: 2 Images from Tonight’s STARGATE UNIVERSE and David Blue Talks About Being Directed by Robert Carlyle

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: October 19th, 2010 at 9:29 am

If you read Collider, you know we’re big fans of Syfy’s Stargate Universe (which now airs Tuesday night’s). Unlike the previous Stargate shows, SGU is a lot darker and more intense.  Already this season, SGU has killed off a number of side characters and they’ve only aired three episodes.

Anyway, tonight’s episode of SGU, titled Pathogen, was directed by Robert Carlyle.  The logline is “The Destiny crew grows concerned when Chloe’s unusual behavior reveals possible Alien influence.”  However, when I spoke to Carlyle at Comic-Con and on set last month, he revealed tonight’s episode is very Eli (David Blue) centric.  He also said it was the first episode they filmed after getting back from hiatus.

Hit the jump to watch an exclusive video featuring Blue discussing being directed by Carlyle. You can also check out two exclusive images:

Alaina Huffman and Jamil Walker Smith On Set Video Interview STARGATE UNIVERSE

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: October 6th, 2010 at 11:33 am

Now that the first two episodes of Stargate Universe season 2 have aired, I feel a lot better posting the interview I did with Alaina Huffman and Jamil Walker Smith on set last month.  That’s because during the interview, Walker Smith was very open about subject matter that could be considered spoilers.  Since a lot of what he said gets revealed in the first two episodes, if you haven’t seen the first them, you might want to skip this interview until you’re caught up.  However, most of the “spoilers” are towards the end of the interview, so you could always just watch the first half.

During the interview, they also talked about what’s going on with their characters during season two, Huffman reveals when she figured out she was pregnant in real life (it was during an eating scene on Destiny), what do they hope to find on Destiny as more of the ship gets explored, and so much more.  However, while we talked about a lot of subjects during the interview, I think the one thing you’ll really take away after watching this is how different Jamil Walker Smith is from his character on the show.  You’ll see…

A Behind the Scenes Tour of STARGATE UNIVERSE with Producer Brad Wright; Plus the New Destiny Bridge Set Revealed!

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: September 29th, 2010 at 2:47 pm

If you’re a fan of Stargate Universe and wish you could walk around the Vancouver soundstages where they film the show, you’re going to love the video I edited together.  That’s because last month when I visited the set, executive producer and co-creator Brad Wright gave all a behind the scenes tour of the various soundstages to the visiting journalists.  He showed us the gate room, Eli’s room, all the hallways and rooms of the Destiny ship, the medical quarters, and the highlight: we got to see the brand new Bridge set that was built for season two!  Even though the bridge hasn’t been revealed on the show, you can see it right now after the jump.

And while getting to see the various soundstages was cool, I think the best part was getting to do the tour with Brad Wright.  That’s because as one of the creators of the show, Wright knows the secrets of every set and he revealed everything as we walked around.  I promise you…if you’re a fan of SGU, you will get to see a side of the Destiny ship that you have never seen on TV:

Justin Louis and Brian J. Smith On Set Interview STARGATE UNIVERSE Season 2

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: September 28th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

With Stargate Universe returning with new episodes tonight on Syfy,  I was invited – along with a few other online journalists – to visit the Vancouver set so I could interview the entire cast and get a close up look at the Destiny ship.  As a big fan of SGU, it was very cool to see the Destiny up close and also interview everyone who brings the show to life.  While I won’t write about the big spoilers I learned, I have no problem saying season two builds on the momentum of the first, and it’s heading towards a big revelation.  Trust me, by the end of season two, a lot of information about the Destiny will be revealed.

Anyhow, over the past week I’ve posted interviews with David Blue and Elyse Levesque, Robert Carlyle, and producer Brad Wright.  Now it’s time for Justin Louis and Brian J. Smith. During the interview they discussed what’s coming up on SGU in season two, Louis talks about a huge 12 page dialogue scene that he did with Robert Carlyle for an upcoming episode, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch what they had to say.  You’ll definitely notice how different Justin Louis is from his character on the show…

With Stargate Universe returning with new episodes on Tuesday, September 28 on Syfy,  I was invited – along with a few other online journalists – to visit the Vancouver set a few weeks ago. While on set I got to see a number of the SGU soundstages, interview the entire cast, and I was also able to check out the new Bridge set that was built for season two.  As a big fan of SGU, it was very cool to see the Destiny ship up close and also interview everyone who brings the show to life.

Over the past few days I’ve been posting some of the interviews I did on set (David Blue and Elyse Levesque, producer Brad Wright) and now it’s time for Robert Carlyle.  During the very revealing interview, Carlyle was very open about what’s coming up on show.  If you’re a fan of SGU, I think you’ll really enjoy hearing what he had to say.  Hit the jump for more:

STARGATE UNIVERSE 1.5 Blu-ray Review

Lost in space, low on supplies and morale, ready for in-fighting to do them all in at any moment, the reluctant crew of the Defiant searches for a way home and a means to survive the far reaches of space.  This is the overarching story of Stargate Universe.  A different direction for the Stargate franchise, it’s the characters (and thusly, the performances) that bring this series to life.  More after the jump:

Co-Creator/Writer/Executive Producer Robert Cooper Exclusive Video Interview STARGATE UNIVERSE

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: August 4th, 2010 at 8:14 pm

At this year’s Comic-Con, I was able to speak with a few cast members of Syfy’s hit show Stargate Universe.  As I’ve said a few times, I never watched any of the previous Stargate shows, but I’ve been very impressed with SGU (Stargate Universe).  Since the show has only aired one full season and it doesn’t return until late September, I really recommend renting/buying the first season and catching up.  It’s absolutely worth it.

Anyway, over the last few days I posted my exclusive interviews with David Blue and Robert Carlyle, and tonight I’ve got the last one and it’s with Co-Creator/Writer/Executive Producer Robert Cooper. During the interview, Cooper talked about how SGU is different from the previous shows, do they have a five year plan, how far ahead have they scripted, he compares the next twenty episodes to the first twenty, what percentage of Destiny has been explored, he reveals some of the storylines of season two, and a lot more.  If you’re a fan of SGU, you’ll love the interview.  Hit the jump to check it out:
