Paul Dano stars as a young writer who takes in his estranged father (Robert De Niro) when he finds him at a homeless shelter. An English-Language trailer for Rodrigo Cortes’ Red Lights has gone online. For those unfamiliar with the flick, it stars Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver as two physicists who debunk claims of paranormal activity, but they run up against a man (Robert De Niro) who may actually have special powers. I dug almost all of the film when I saw it at Sundance, but the ending needs to be reworked since the execution undermines the power of what came before. The new trailer sells the movie as a straight-up supernatural thriller, and while that’s technically true, the trailer also makes the film look generic and forgettable. There’s more personality and fun in Red Lights than what’s on display here.

Although the release date for The Raven has been pushed back a month, that’s allowed Relativity to give us more looks at the property, like this new poster. It’s not quite as ink-soaked or blood-soaked as previous efforts and resembles more of a phoenix than a raven, but it’s stylish nonetheless. Here’s what you need to know about the posters we’ve rounded up today:

Mysticism and superstition can provide hope. If there’s something beyond our world, something we can’t see, then perhaps there’s a shortcut, a fount of secret knowledge, anything that can provide a solution when the real world doesn’t have one we like. That’s where con artists come in and appeal to our desire for a great beyond. These frauds carry themselves as the special people who will use their gift (and a curse! It’s always a blessing and a curse with these things) to heal the body and/or soul. Rodrigo Cortés supernatural thriller Red Lights puts us on the side of skeptical scientists who aren’t opposed to the paranormal, but have yet to see any evidence of it. Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and her assistant Dr. Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) use the power of science rather than the supernatural to debunk these phony mystics. But in its second half, Red Lights makes a major narrative turn, shifts the tone, draws the viewer deeper into the possibility of the paranormal, and has its characters struggle to keep a hold on reality. However, the film ends in a serious backfire where a clumsy execution breaks the spell.

Jason Statham is like the only fast food restaurant in a small town. There’s really no other actor who can be counted on to deliver action films on a regular basis, and Statham fills that need at least once or twice yearly. Sometimes you just want a burger, and sometimes you just want to see Statham kick the crap out of someone. Killer Elite brought together Statham, Robert De Niro, and Clive Owen for playtime, and though the two others are relatively serious actors, here they’re playing on Statham’s turf. The results are a little sluggish, but deliver what’s expected. Our review of Killer Elite on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Yesterday, Sundance announced the line-up for their Premiere’s category. This is where the biggest films will play but not necessarily the best. The best movies I saw at Sundance this year were Project Nim and Martha Marcy May Marlene and both have stayed with me the past 11 months. But there’s no reason great films can’t be part of the premieres category (Win Win was terrific), and hopefully 2012 will have more selections that leave a strong impression.
After the jump you’ll find images for Jake Schreier‘s Robot and Frank (starring Frank Langella and Susan Sarandon), Michael Walker‘s Price Check (starring Parker Posey), and Rodrigo Cortés‘ Red Lights (starring Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, Elizabeth Olsen, and Toby Jones). The 2012 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 19 – 29th.

The Weinstein Company has set the release date of David O. Russell‘s The Silver Linings Playbook for November 21, 2012. Based on the novel by Matthew Quick, the movie centers on a former high school teacher (Bradley Cooper) who returns home after four years in a mental institution to live with his mother (Jackie Weaver) and win back the affection of his estranged wife. The movie also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Tucker, Julia Stiles, and Robert De Niro. Silver Linings sounds like it could be awards material and now TWC can put “From the Oscar-nominated Director of The Fighter” on the poster.
The Weinsteins will probably take Silver Linings out for a spin on the awards circuit before its November 21st release. Of course, the Thanksgiving Day weekend is always crowded and so far the date also belongs to Alfonso Cuaron‘s sci-fi drama Gravity, the family comedy Parental Guidance, the Keanu Reeves‘ action-adventure 47 Ronin, and the animated film Rise of the Guardians. The first trailer for the drama Being Flynn has gone online. The film is an adaptation of Nick Flynn’s acclaimed memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, written and directed by Paul Weitz. Paul Dano stars as a writer who takes a job at a homeless shelter, only to run across his long-absent father (Robert De Niro) who is seeking a bed. The story is neat, and the trailer plays pretty well. Dano and De Niro are both capable of great performances, but I can’t tell if Being Flynn will play as an insightful drama, or a heavy-handed soap opera. Weitz was responsible for About a Boy which gives me hope, but his last three films (American Dreamz, Cirque du Freak, and Little Fockers) give me pause. I’m hoping for the best though, as the trailer reminds me a bit of Wonder Boys which is definitely not a bad thing.

Straight out of the American Film Market, we’ve got the first images and synopsis for director David O. Russell’s The Fighter follow-up, The Silver Linings Playbook. Based on the novel by Matthew Quick, the film tells the story of a former high school teacher (Bradley Cooper) who returns home after four years in a mental institution to live with his mother (Jackie Weaver) and win back the affection of his estranged wife. The great cast also includes Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Stiles, Chris Tucker, and Robert De Niro. Russell has a knack for off-center material, and I’m looking forward to see what he’s cooked up here. UPDATE: We’ve been asked by the studio to take down the images. Sorry if you missed them

Robert De Niro and John Travolta are set to team up for the action pic Killing Season. Daredevil director Mark Steven Johnson is set to helm the Appalachian Mountains-set film. The story centers on an American military veteran (De Niro) living in a remote cabin in the woods who is visited by a European tourist (Travolta). The two strike up an unlikely friendship and all goes well until the veteran realizes that the tourist is in fact a Serbian soldier bent on revenge. The film will see the two go toe-to-toe across the grueling Appalachian mountain landscape. The plot reminds me a bit of the 1997 pic The Edge, which had Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin facing off in the woods.
The script comes from Evan Daugherty, who also wrote Snow White and the Huntsman. De Niro recently signed on to star in The Comedian alongside Kristen Wiig for director Sean Penn. Production on Killing Season begins January 16th. Hit the jump to read the full press release.

Back in June, we reported the rumor that Sean Penn was looking to direct the character-driven drama The Comedian, with Robert De Niro to possibly star. Now it looks like things worked out, as it was announced today that Penn will indeed be directing De Niro in the pic, and they’ve found their female lead in Kristen Wiig. The project previously caught the eye of Martin Scorsese, and centers on an aging insult comic in the vein of Don Rickles and Joan Rivers. De Niro’s character “clings to any recognition that comes from his days as a beloved TV character as he tries to reignite his stagnant career. Sentenced to community service for hitting a heckler in the head with a microphone, the comic meets Harmony, a dazzling and defiant redhead who turns his life sideways.”
The script comes from Art Linson (What Just Happened) and comedian Jeffrey Ross. This definitely sounds like an intriguing project, and Penn’s involvement brings quite a bit of weight to the material. It’s been a while since we’ve seen De Niro take on such a nuanced and complex character, and his pairing with the massively talented Wiig is an inspired choice. Penn was last behind the camera on 2007’s excellent Into the Wild. Production on The Comedian is set to get underway next spring. [Update: We've been sent the full press release, which is now included after the jump]

New posters have been released for The Rum Diary and New Year’s Eve. The former is kind of cute and almost makes the film look like a light comic spin on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which is appropriate considering that Hunter S. Thompson was the author of both novels. As for the New Year’s Eve poster, it perfectly encapsulates the cynical, greedy reason for the movie’s existence. The point isn’t to convey a plot, but to jam as many stars into the film as possible in the hopes that you’ll like one or two of them enough to see the movie. However, the stars you like will most likely be in the film for probably less than ten minutes total. If you think watching a star you like play a poorly defined character is worth a dollar a minute, then you like wasting money.
Hit the jump to check out the posters. The Rum Diary opens October 28th. New Year’s Eve opens December 9th.

A new trailer for Garry Marshall’s star-studded New Year’s Eve has been released. This trailer isn’t much different from the first one in that it’s basically a montage of all the pretty celebrities and their separate stories set to pop music, though this new look does include inappropriate Abigail Breslin flashing. If you enjoyed Marshall’s Valentine’s Day, then you probably don’t need to be sold on the pseudo-sequel, and if the February-centered first film wasn’t your thing then this New Year’s Eve trailer is probably more than a little cringe-worthy. It looks like Seth Meyers may be the only saving grace for the brave boyfriends who are forced to soldier through this one.
The cast includes Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarah Jessica Parker, Hilary Swank, Zac Efron, Sienna Miller, Lea Michele, Sofia Vergara, Abigail Breslin, Til Schweiger, Seth Meyers, Jon Bon Jovi, Josh Duhamel, and Carla Gugino. New Year’s Eve opens on December 9th. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

At some point in the script stage, Killer Elite had the potential to be a good movie. It takes two opposing characters that have equally valid, noble motives and pits them against each other. Unfortunately, that interesting premise is drowned by paper-thin characters, idiotic writing, action movie clichés, and dull set pieces. Even as a generic action movie, it falls far short of its low bar.
