Last month, we reported development on a comedy called Last Vegas. The script was written by Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love.), and is essentially The Hangover with old people. The story centers on four old friends who decide to throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the only one of them who has remained single. Michael Douglas is onboard to play the lifelong bachelor, and we had previously heard that Robert De Niro was in talks to join the cast. CBS Films announced today that De Niro has closed his deal to play the party-averse Paddy Connelly, who reluctantly agrees to fly to Vegas at the request of his friends. The character of a curmudgeonly older gentleman who isn’t fond of jokes or partying should be quite the stretch for De Niro.
Jon Turtletaub (National Treasure) is set to direct, and we previously heard that Christopher Walken may be circling a role as well. No confirmation of Walken’s involvement is included in the announcement, but we do have the first official logline. Hit the jump to check out the press release.

Robert De Niro says one of his buzzed about sequels is progressing, while he wasn’t aware of another that has long been rumored. At a Tribeca Film Festival panel with the Oscar-winning actor & award winning writer/director/producer Judd Apatow to mark the 100th anniversary of Universal Pictures, De Niro talked about follow-ups to the studio’s 1988 hit comedy Midnight Run and the film which won him a Best Actor Oscar, Raging Bull.
Hit the jump to see which is likely and which is, well, more complicated.

Yesterday we learned that Michael Douglas had entered negotiations to star in the “Hangover with old people” comedy Last Vegas. The script, written by Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love.), centers on “on a quartet of retired boomers who are called upon for a Vegas bachelor party by their friend, a ladies man (Douglas) who is finally settling down and marrying a woman half his age.” Now Vulture reports that Robert De Niro is in talks to join in on the boomer debauchery. Per their report, De Niro and Douglas would play characters that fall for the same girl, so either De Niro is secretly in love with Douglas’ fiancé or, more likely, an older actress will be cast in a different role that the two will fawn over.
Moreover, Vulture adds that talks continue with Christopher Walken to take a co-starring role in the pic, but the studio wants to close De Niro’s deal before finishing up with Walken. The latter is also poised to star in another “old guys are funny too” comedy called Stand Up Guys with Al Pacino and Alan Arkin. I liked Crazy, Stupid, Love. well enough, and director Jon Turtletaub (National Treasure) knows how to make entertaining movies, so hopefully we’re not just in for 90 minutes of Depends jokes.

The UK trailer for Rodrigo Cortes‘ Red Lights has gone online. The film stars Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver as scientists who investigate paranormal activity, and who find a dangerous challenge when controversial psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) comes out of retirement. I caught the movie at Sundance and thought it was terrific up until the ending, which not only leaves the movie on a sour note, but undoes a lot of what was accomplished earlier in the picture. There’s a chance the ending has been changed (most of the people I spoke to at Sundance also had a problem with it), but we’ll have to wait and see. The UK trailer does a fairly solid job of selling the film, although it should play up the paranormal investigations from the first half of the movie since those are the best parts.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. The film also stars Toby Jones and Elizabeth Olsen. Red Lights opens in the UK on June 22nd and in the US on July 13th.

Director Rodrigo Cortes’ (Buried) thriller Red Lights now has a release date. According to a Wall Street Journal piece (via STYD), the supernatural pic will hit theaters on July 13th. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and stars Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver as two physicists who debunk claims of paranormal activity, but they run up against a man (Robert De Niro) who may actually have special powers. Matt caught the film at Sundance and really liked most of it, but he had issues with the ending. It’s worth noting that filmmakers often make tweaks to their movies following festivals and prior to wide release, so Cortes may have made some changes to the film’s conclusion.
I think the trailer looks pretty solid and I like the cast, so I’m interested to check the thing out this summer. I’m assuming the pic will get a limited release on that July 13th date, but the wide releases opening that weekend include Seth MacFarlane’s comedy Ted and Ice Age: Continental Drift. Midnight Run is about to get Ratner-fied. Development on a sequel to the 1988 buddy action-comedy began in early 2010 when word came that Universal was working on a follow-up with star Robert De Niro attached to reprise his bounty hunter role from the original. Now comes word that Mr. Brett Ratner is in talks to direct the sequel and screenwriters David Elliot and Paul Lovett (G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra) have been tapped to perform a rewrite. For those unfamiliar, the first film starred De Niro as a bounty hunter tasked with escorting an embezzler (Charles Grodin) across the country. Hit the jump for more on Midnight Run 2.

Being Flynn (opening in theaters on March 2nd), adapted from Nick Flynn’s 2004 memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, explores the often unconventional bond between parent and child. In the film, Nick (Paul Dano) is a young writer who misses the loving nature of his late mother (Julianne Moore) and hasn’t seen his father, Jonathan (Robert De Niro), a self-proclaimed “master storyteller,” in 18 years. After serving time in prison for cashing forged checks, losing his job as a cab driver and becoming homeless, Jonathan impulsively reaches out to Nick, who tries to integrate his father into his life, but quickly learns how complicated that truly will be.
At the film’s press day, director/screenwriter Paul Weitz spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about what made him want to bring Nick Flynn’s story to life, why he’s drawn to father-son stories, why he went through 30 drafts of the script prior to filming (and how the final draft was ultimately the same as the first draft, at its core), and what the real-life father and son thought about the actors who played them. He also talked about how he’s developing something with Tina Fey, and that he’s going to be doing a play in New York in the Spring, with Topher Grace (reprising the character that he played in In Good Company) and Olivia Thirlby. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

We have 5 clips for you from Being Flynn, an adaptation of Nick Flynn‘s memoir Another Bullshit Night In Suck City written and directed by Paul Weitz (Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant). Paul Dano stars as the fictional Nick Flynn, a young writer who unexpectedly reunites with the father (Robert De Niro) who abandoned him 18 years ago and describes himself as “a master storyteller.” Olivia Thirlby, Lili Taylor, Wes Studi, and Julianne Moore also star.
Being Flynn opens on March 2. Watch the clips after the break.

Focus Features has released the poster and new images for Paul Weitz‘ dramedy Being Flynn. Paul Dano stars as a young writer who takes in his estranged father (Robert De Niro) when he finds him at a homeless shelter. The film is based on Nick Flynn‘s memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City, and also stars Julianne Moore, Lily Taylor, and Olivia Thirlby.

An English-Language trailer for Rodrigo Cortes’ Red Lights has gone online. For those unfamiliar with the flick, it stars Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver as two physicists who debunk claims of paranormal activity, but they run up against a man (Robert De Niro) who may actually have special powers. I dug almost all of the film when I saw it at Sundance, but the ending needs to be reworked since the execution undermines the power of what came before. The new trailer sells the movie as a straight-up supernatural thriller, and while that’s technically true, the trailer also makes the film look generic and forgettable. There’s more personality and fun in Red Lights than what’s on display here.
Hit the jump to check out the trailer. Millennium picked up Red Lights for U.S. distribution, but no release date has been announced.

Although the release date for The Raven has been pushed back a month, that’s allowed Relativity to give us more looks at the property, like this new poster. It’s not quite as ink-soaked or blood-soaked as previous efforts and resembles more of a phoenix than a raven, but it’s stylish nonetheless. Here’s what you need to know about the posters we’ve rounded up today:

Mysticism and superstition can provide hope. If there’s something beyond our world, something we can’t see, then perhaps there’s a shortcut, a fount of secret knowledge, anything that can provide a solution when the real world doesn’t have one we like. That’s where con artists come in and appeal to our desire for a great beyond. These frauds carry themselves as the special people who will use their gift (and a curse! It’s always a blessing and a curse with these things) to heal the body and/or soul. Rodrigo Cortés supernatural thriller Red Lights puts us on the side of skeptical scientists who aren’t opposed to the paranormal, but have yet to see any evidence of it. Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and her assistant Dr. Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) use the power of science rather than the supernatural to debunk these phony mystics. But in its second half, Red Lights makes a major narrative turn, shifts the tone, draws the viewer deeper into the possibility of the paranormal, and has its characters struggle to keep a hold on reality. However, the film ends in a serious backfire where a clumsy execution breaks the spell.

Jason Statham is like the only fast food restaurant in a small town. There’s really no other actor who can be counted on to deliver action films on a regular basis, and Statham fills that need at least once or twice yearly. Sometimes you just want a burger, and sometimes you just want to see Statham kick the crap out of someone. Killer Elite brought together Statham, Robert De Niro, and Clive Owen for playtime, and though the two others are relatively serious actors, here they’re playing on Statham’s turf. The results are a little sluggish, but deliver what’s expected. Our review of Killer Elite on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Yesterday, Sundance announced the line-up for their Premiere’s category. This is where the biggest films will play but not necessarily the best. The best movies I saw at Sundance this year were Project Nim and Martha Marcy May Marlene and both have stayed with me the past 11 months. But there’s no reason great films can’t be part of the premieres category (Win Win was terrific), and hopefully 2012 will have more selections that leave a strong impression.
After the jump you’ll find images for Jake Schreier‘s Robot and Frank (starring Frank Langella and Susan Sarandon), Michael Walker‘s Price Check (starring Parker Posey), and Rodrigo Cortés‘ Red Lights (starring Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, Elizabeth Olsen, and Toby Jones). The 2012 Sundance Film Festival runs from January 19 – 29th.
