Season three of AMC's The Walking Dead is now behind us and so is a major cast member who met their end in the surprising season finale. Writer of The Walking Dead comics and executive producer on the show, Robert Kirkman, recently spoke at length about the decision to make some changes from the comics for the show. Kirkman talked about the death of some characters, the retention of others, reactions from the comic fans and moving forward with season four. Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

[Spoiler Alert]

Kirkman recently spoke to THR about the fallout from the shocking end of season three of The Walking Dead, as well as where the show will go from here. Head over to the link for the full interview; highlights follow below:

On the death of Andrea (Laurie Holden):
It's a big departure from the comics, which to a certain extent is somewhat risky but at the end of the day I like the idea of there being big differences that key in to this is the show, this is the comic. I like that there's some kind of separation there. It was definitely something that weighted upon us heavily. The unfortunate thing is that you're not really going to see why this was a good decision and good for the show until season four. We thought having that tragic end to her story line -- having [Andrea] work so hard to save these people of Woodbury and find a peaceful resolution to ...

The third season of AMC's The Walking Dead has now come to its conclusion. We started this season by watching as Rick and his followers fought their way into an infested prison which they promptly turned into a secure place to start a new life. The prison was a central focus in the season finale but it has turned into a very different place. We also lost a couple of characters in this last hour, though after suffering a season's worth of emotional turmoil, it's the survivors might actually be the worst off.

Starring Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Laurie Holden, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, Dallas Roberts, Emily Kinney, Chad Coleman and Lew Temple, AMC’s The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9. Hit the jump for my review of the season three finale, "Welcome to the Tombs."

This episode finally got us to the conflict between Woodbury and the Prison crew, which is what we've been building to all season. However, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out the character arcs that reached a stage of completion (or at least a new level) by the end of season three. Daryl lost a brother but found a family; Michonne landed in a similar boat. Glenn and Maggie went through their own emotional rollercoaster. But it's the Grimes family members who have suffered the most incredible pains during these last 16 episodes: the death ...

The penultimate episode of season three of AMC's The Walking Dead is now behind us. Along the way we've had to say goodbye to some near and dear characters and tonight's episode was no different. While it was still just a precursor to the all out war that is expected on next week's finale, it still packed an emotional punch that managed to carry the story forward ever so slightly. Blood has been spilt on both sides of the conflict; no one is safe, no one is certain to survive.

Starring Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Laurie Holden, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, Dallas Roberts, Emily Kinney, Chad Coleman and Lew Temple, AMC’s The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9. Hit the jump for my review of "This Sorrowful Life."

Tonight's episode was all about the Dixon brothers, with a bit of Michonne thrown in for good measure. Rick, Daryl and Hershel have all signed off on handing Michonne over to the Governor for the chance that Woodbury will leave the prison alone, but Rick recruits Merle to do the dirty work. Merle knows that Rick and the others lack the spine to do what's necessary so he takes matters into his own hand(s) and takes Michonne on an ill-fated road trip. Meanwhile, Rick second guesses his decision too late and Daryl goes off in search of his brother to prevent the exchange. Michonne manages ...

Only two more episodes in season three of AMC's The Walking Dead. Tonight's story felt like a retro horror movie at times but for the most part was a chore to slog through. For fans who love Andrea (or just love to hate her), this episode was for you as the main crux of the plot centered on her and the mobilization of the forces at Woodbury.

Starring Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Laurie Holden, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, Dallas Roberts, Emily Kinney, Chad Coleman and Lew Temple, AMC’s The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9. Hit the jump for my review of “Prey.”

I fully expected tonight's episode to be filler, but much like with the episode titled "Clear," they could have done more with the side characters. There was an effort to flesh out Tyreese (Coleman) and his crew with a little bit of backstory and some conflict; unfortunately this was overshadowed by Andrea's decision to flee Woodbury and The Gov's obsession with bringing her back. It's looking like next week is somehow going to be even more filler, probably taking place at a parallel time to tonight's episode but occurring at the prison instead of Woodbury. I have faith in writer and new showrunner Scott Gimple, who wrote "Clear" as well as next week's installment, "This Sorrowful Life." Let's take a look at what did (or didn't) happen in "Prey."

With only three episodes left in the third season of AMC's The Walking Dead, we've unfortunately gotten to the point where everything is set up for a big showdown and now we're just stalling for time. Last week's episode was a great example of how a well-written show can use that to its advantage and work in some exemplary character development. This week's episode? Not so much.

Starring Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Laurie Holden, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, Dallas Roberts, Emily Kinney, Chad Coleman and Lew Temple, AMC’s The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9. Hit the jump for my review of “Arrow on the Doorpost.”

First of all, I'd just like to thank last week's hitchhiker on behalf of the cast since apparently his pack provided Hershel, Rick and Daryl with shiny new duds. I'm sure the ladies will find some way to update their post-apocalyptic style soon as well (zombie fashion show?). Anyway, the bulk of this episode centered on a meet-and-greet between Rick and the Governor in order to discuss terms and see if both sides could get along. Doesn't look like that will be happening. A side-plot was the continued butting of heads between Glenn and Merle that developed a bit of tension and then fizzled out. At least Glenn and Maggie got to patch things up in a sexy fashion.

About this meeting between Rick and the Governor...it's ...

Looks like the smashing success of AMC’s The Walking Dead has landed original comic book writer and executive producer Robert Kirkman a new development deal with Fox International Channels (FIC). With a huge ratings boom of 12.3 million viewers for its midseason return in February, The Walking Dead is enjoying a very successful third season, and has a season four renewal. Despite shake-ups with current showrunner Glen Mazzara leaving at the end of this season, FIC wants more from Kirkman.

A press release sent out today shares some details about the series, saying that Kirkman is going to explore bringing the world of exorcism to television. With the success of exorcism based movies such as The Exorcism of Emily Rose and The Last Exorcism, Kirkman could really find an untapped market by creating a television series with exorcism at its center. If it still has that visceral and raw nature that The Walking Dead has, then it may be another hit. Hit the jump for the press release, including a bolded synopsis of the premise.

Check out the full press release below:
Los Angeles– 4 March 2013 – FOX International Channels (FIC),The Walking Dead Creator/Executive Producer Robert Kirkman, Kirkman’s Skybound imprint at Image Comics, and Circle of Confusion are developing a script based on Kirkman’s upcoming comic book series set in the world of exorcism. This partnership emerged from a long-standing and successful relationship between Kirkman and FIC during the ongoing run of AMC’s hit series, The Walking Dead, based on Kirkman’s Eisner ...

Last week's episode of AMC's The Walking Dead was a bit on the dull side, but tonight's ep really made up for it! New locations to experience, interesting relationships to explore and even a surprise reunion. While it wasn't the most action-packed of episodes, there was just something about tonight's hour that took the franchise to a whole new level.

Starring Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Laurie Holden, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, Dallas Roberts, Emily Kinney, Chad Coleman and Lew Temple, AMC’s The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9. Hit the jump for my review of “Clear.”

Tonight's episode departed from this season's pattern of splitting the story between characters in Woodbury and characters in the prison. In fact, we only get scenes with Rick, Carl and Michonne for the entire run, with an additional surprise character thrown in for good measure. We don't even get to see Woodbury or the prison, which came as a welcome breath of fresh air.

Instead, Rick takes Carl and Michonne for a jaunt back to his home town to scare up some weapons and ammunition. Finding the police station and other familiar haunts picked clean, they happen upon a strange stretch of road decked out in creepy phrases and booby traps. Who's waiting for them on the other side of the barricade? None other than Morgan (Lennie James), the man who saved Rick from certain death in the first ...

Over the past 30 years, PaleyFest has held panel sessions and screenings that connect the worldwide community of television fans with the casts and creators of their favorite TV shows. Kicking things off this year were the folks behind The Walking Dead, which is currently one of the most popular drama series on television, and Collider was invited to be on the press line and speak to some of the talent responsible for pushing the boundaries of storytelling.

While there, we briefly got the opportunity to speak with executive producers Robert Kirkman (who created the comic the series is based on), David Alpert and Greg Nicotero (who is also responsible for all of the zombie gore), as well as cast members Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Scott Wilson and Emily Kinney. The actors shared their thoughts on the journeys their characters have gone on and where they’re headed, and the creative team gave some insight about wrapping up Season 3, the pressure of topping the previous season’s finale, looking ahead to Season 4 (which starts shooting in May), creating new and exciting zombie kills, and how they cast for the walkers. Check out what they had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

Greg, as things are getting closer to the finish line for Season 3, just how much darker do things get and are there any moments of levity before the season is done?

GREG NICOTERO: You’ve gotta keep those moments of levity. As dark ...

After the crazy ending of last week's episode of AMC's The Walking Dead, I fully expected the toned down hour of television we got tonight. There were a few minor surprises here and there with a little bit of classical practical effects work thrown in for good measure. Tonight's episode was all about setting the stage and the players for the inevitable conflict between the two groups of survivors. Only five episodes left!

Starring Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Laurie Holden, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, Dallas Roberts, Emily Kinney, Chad Coleman and Lew Temple, AMC’s The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9. Hit the jump for my review of "I Ain't a Judas."

The attack from the Governor's forces left the crew at the prison a bit shaken; the effects were still being felt this week. Merle is being kept under the watchful eye of his brother and may have found an unbiased ally in Hershel. Michonne continues to exist on the fringes of the group, but appears to have gained Rick's trust, along with Carl, who gets an upgrade in guns, armor and responsibility. When Andrea crashes their party, she's welcomed warmly by some (okay, only Carol) and treated hostilely by others (mostly Rick). After attempting to broker a truce between the survivors at the prison and those at Woodbury, Andrea heads back to The Governor and has a chance to put ...

I may have been a little overzealous in rating last week's episode of AMC's The Walking Dead. Even though it pulled in a ridiculous number of viewers, there were some clunky moments and some odd character behavior written into the episode, one which lacked the cohesiveness and punch necessary for a mid-season return. I'm happy to say it picked back up this week with great character building, two solid action sequences and even a surprise character death, but that wasn't the biggest surprise by a long shot!

Starring Andrew Lincoln, David Morrissey, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Laurie Holden, Danai Gurira, Michael Rooker, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Scott Wilson, Dallas Roberts, Emily Kinney, Chad Coleman and Lew Temple, AMC’s The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9. Hit the jump for my review of "Home."

Tonight's episode picks up where we left off with Rick continuing to lose his marbles. Pretty much everyone knows he's not stable now and Glenn is starting to assume more of a leadership role. He and Michonne are looking to team up and take out the Governor on their own, even if Hershel thinks this is a terrible idea. (At least someone is finally patching up the breach in the prison!) We get some closure on the tension between Glenn and Maggie but it's certainly not resolved just yet...there were more important matters to attend to.

Meanwhile, back at Woodbury, the Governor is testing the loyalty of his followers. He ...

AMC's The Walking Dead came back fighting tonight with an opening that pit brother against brother in a gladiatorial battle of the Dixons. It looks like fans finally got an answer to the question of what would happen when Merle and Daryl were reunited and it was anything but what I expected. Things are starting to unravel in Woodbury as well as back at the prison, but it wasn't all dreary: tonight's episode even featured a quick undead cameo from former Super Bowl MVP Hines Ward!

After months of speculating what would happen when Daryl finally met up with Merle again, we finally got to see the two Dixons throw down...and it was fairly anticlimactic. With two fan favorites like these, you knew the showrunners wouldn't kill one of them off, but even the fight itself was rather half-hearted and rushed. Oh well. At least we got to hear the Dixon brothers bicker and were treated to a few masterful one-liners by Merle. You knew there was no way that Rick was going to welcome that lunatic back into the fold, but in an odd and unexpected bit of a plot ...

AMC is getting really good at dicking around the showrunners of their most popular and creatively beloved shows. The network’s frequent headbutting with Mad Men creator/showrunner Matthew Weiner is no secret, and they edged out The Walking Dead creator/showrunner Frank Darabont halfway through the hit zombie series' second season. Now, in a shocking move on the heels of a season four renewal, current The Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara has announced that he’s leaving the show over a "difference of opinion" with the network. Hit the jump for more.

Here’s the full announcement from AMC and Mazzara:
Today, AMC announces the season 4 pick-up of The Walking Dead.

AMC also jointly announces with Glen Mazzara today that for future seasons, the two parties have mutually decided to part ways. Glen guided the series creatively for seasons 2 and 3. AMC is grateful for his hard work. We are both proud of our shared success.

Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward, and conclude that it is best to part ways. This decision is amicable and Glen will remain on for post-production on season 3B as showrunner and executive producer.
Frankly, this is surprising news. Since Mazzara took over the reins of the show from Darabont, the series has seen a crazy increase in viewership and critical acclaim. Not only is it breaking ratings for cable television, it's regularly beating everything on network TV as well. Season three is generally considered the best installment of ...

The good news is that AMC's The Walking Dead closed out 2012 with another fantastic episode; the bad news is that they won't return until February 10, 2013. The mid-season finale didn't leave us with a bombshell of a cliffhanger exactly (ie it was no hatch in the middle of the island), but rather an anticipatory ending which will give fans plenty to talk about and argue over for the next month or so. The episode also happened to feature the introduction of a fan-favorite character from the comics and a brief cameo from the show's former cast member.

The two groups finally collided together in an epic clash of smoke grenades, automatic weapons and blood. But before we get to that, the mid-season finale introduced us to yet another group of survivors, led by comics fan-favorite, Tyreese (Chad Coleman). After (mostly) surviving an attack by Walkers, the group heads into the prison and makes their way to a Walker-infested boiler room. Carl helps them out and leads them to a safe place within the prison. Meanwhile, Rick and the crew storm Woodbury and rescue Glenn and Maggie, but lose Oscar to a gunshot, as well ...

It's hard to believe, but there's only one episode left of AMC's The Walking Dead before the show goes on a mid-season hiatus until February. The break is going to be unbearable enough without what is sure to be one hell of a cliffhanger on next week's episode. And while tonight's episode was a set up of the coming conflict, it was done with style and substance; I only wish more shows were as solid week-to-week as The Walking Dead.

The lines separating Woodbury from the prison have finally begun to blur, but we're not quite there yet. Glenn and Maggie suffer through a variety of torturous interrogation techniques at the hand(s) of Merle and the Governor, only to have Maggie give up information on Rick's group. Andrea and the Gov continue their tryst and Andrea helps the resident scientist Milton (Roberts) perform an ill-conceived experiment. Meanwhile, Michonne has made her way to the prison and is brought in by the gang to tend to her wounds. An uneasy truce is reached when Michonne informs them about Glenn and Maggie's kidnapping, the Woodbury compound and the psychopathic Governor who runs it. Though they're attacked ...

It's amazing how much meat and potatoes AMC's The Walking Dead has already crammed into the first five episodes of season three, but the best is yet to come. We've seen two independent storylines develop so far this season and it looks as if tonight's episode is going to be the catalyst to set those dramatic arcs on a collision course. It remains to be seen whether Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his group or The Governor (David Morrissey) and his town will be left standing.

Since it looks like we'll be seeing divergent storylines for just a bit longer, we'll split them up in a quick recap to make it easier to follow. Things get a little sexy between Andrea and the Governor finally. On the outskirts of Woodbury, Merle hunts Michonne with little luck but takes Glenn and Maggie hostage instead. At the prison, Rick continues to lose his mind as a series of phone calls from beyond the grave have him questioning his sanity. Meanwhile, Daryl shares a personal story with Carl and then reunites with Carol; Oscar (Vincent Ward) finds a pair of slippers.

Let's start off at Woodbury where things are nice and cozy for ...

It's hard to follow up the perfection that was last week's episode of AMC's The Walking Dead. With the kills, casualties, twists and turns of "Killer Within," we expected a much more subdued, character-driven episode this week. That's exactly what we got. I'll save the spoilers for after the jump, but it's safe to say that our survivors are busy dealing with the loss of some of their teammates and the addition of others. The contrast between Rick's prison gang and the Governor's quaint town of Woodbury is still present and strong, but the line is quickly blurring.

Second, for those of you who are all caught up on the show to this point, you can find candid interviews from our recently departed show members here and here. Now, let's do a quick summary of tonight's episode. The folks over in Woodbury seem to have it made and are celebrating their success with a festival of sorts. I was completely blown away by how far the fourth episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead decided to go. This was an unbelievable episode that showcased everything the fans have asked for and then some: dramatic character development, incredible tension across the board, plenty of gore to go around and more than its fair share of heartbreak. My only complaint with this brilliant episode is, being this early in the season, how can they hope to top it?

Last week, we got a tour of Woodbury courtesy of Andrea, Michonne, the Governor and Merle. This week, we split our time between the peaceful little post-apocalyptic town and the work-in-progress that has become the prison. Let’s wrap up Woodbury first, since that’s the less involved of this week’s storylines.

Michonne walks the perimeter of her temporary home and begins to suspect that the Governor was responsible for the deaths of the National Guardsmen. While Andrea and Michonne makes plans to leave Woodbury and head for the coast (or a nice secluded island), Andrea gives Merle some information to help him track down his brother Daryl. Merle and the Governor reach ...

Last week on The Walking Dead, we saw Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the crew deal with a life-threatening injury to one of their own, a prison swarming with Walkers and the arrival of a group of strangers that did not have the best of intentions. We'll have to wait at least another week to see how they're doing because tonight's episode is all about Andrea (Laurie Holden) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). We also get a great introduction to season three's most anticipated new character and a warm welcome for a character from the past. Hit the jump to check out our recap of the latest episode of The Walking Dead.

Welcome to Woodbury! The Governor has set up a town that looks too good to be true (and I'm sure it is) with a structured ...

Last week, we got a a good look at our zombie apocalypse survivors working as a team in the season three premiere of The Walking Dead on AMC. The crew stormed a prison, cleared the grounds of Walkers and prepared to hole up in the secure and defensible cell blocks. Unfortunately, one of their own took a Walker bite to the ankle in the process and the gang found out that they were not the only survivors seeking refuge in the prison. The second episode, "Sick," picks up right where we left off. After the solid opening episode, the follow-up has managed to ratchet up the tension while satiating the audience's appetite for Walker (and non-Walker) deaths alike. Hit the jump for my recap and review of episode two of The Walking Dead.

And speaking of spoilers, you guys hate it when we writers ruin something for you, so please have the courtesy not to ruin things for others in the comments. The show does not stick to the Robert Kirkman comics 100% (as we found out with Shane's character arc), so don't assume you know what's going to happen. If you want to show off how smart you are, take it somewhere else. Now that that's out of the way, here's a brief recap of the events of episode two, "Sick."

Tonight's episode literally picks up where we left off with Rick, Daryl (Norman Reedus), T-Dog ...
