First Trailer for ALBERT NOBBS Starring Glenn Close

Glenn Close has spent the last three decades trying to bring Albert Nobbs to the screen after the title role won her an Obie in 1982.  She’s finally succeeded, and we’ve got the trailer to prove it.  Close plays a shy butler with a secret: ” ‘He’ is a woman who has had to behave as a man all her life in order to escape a life of poverty and loneliness.”  Janet McTeer, Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, and Pauline Collins also star.  Rodrigo Garcia (In Treatment) directed the adaptation from a screenplay by Close and John Banville, based on the short story by George Moore.

I am way too immature for the subject matter, and the film received mixed reviews at Telluride and TIFF.  But the trailer suggests a handsomely shot period piece and a tender approach to the story.  If you’re one of those mature cinephiles, check out the trailer plus two clips after the jump to judge for yourself.

Aaron Johnson and Mia Wasikowska Join Glenn Close and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers for ALBERT NOBBS

Once upon a time, Orlando Bloom and Amanda Seyfried were set to star opposite Glenn Close in Albert Nobbs.  Not so anymore, though Close is still in place as producer, co-writer, and star in the role that won her an Obie back in 1982.  ScreenTerrier [via The Playlist] reports Seyfried’s role has been filled by Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland); Aaron Johnson (Kick-Ass) will replace Bloom as it preps for shooting in the coming weeks.  I’d give the slight edge to Seyfried over Wasikowska here, but Johnson is a major upgrade from Mr. Bloom.  Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) also stars.

Rodrigo Garcia (In Treatment) directs from a script by Close and John Banville, based on the George Moore short story about a woman (Close) who has been disguising herself as a man to escape poverty.  Hit the jump for the official synopsis.

Annette Bening Interview MOTHER AND CHILD

Acclaimed for her work on screen and in the theater, actress Annette Bening is starring in Rodrigo Garcia’s Mother and Child, in which she plays a woman haunted by the daughter she gave up for adoption at the age of 14.

Working as a physical therapist in a rehabilitation clinic and looking after her elderly mother with whom she barely speaks has impacted Karen’s (Bening) ability to have normal human relationships. She’s uncomfortable around just about everybody, and is demanding and unsociable at home and at work, as she keeps up a silent monologue to her absent daughter (Naomi Watts) through journal entries and letters never to be sent.

During an interview at the film’s press day, Annette Bening talked about approaching the paradox of a character who is both reaching out and shutting down, at the same time, finding interesting roles in Hollywood and the importance of social and political activities in her life. Opening this Friday is writer-director Rodrigo Garcia’s (Nine Lives, Big Love, In Treatment) Mother and Child.  Starring Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, Naomi Watts and Samuel L. Jackson, the film is about three women whose lives share a common core: they have all been profoundly affected by adoption.  The film is currently sitting at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, which means the movie works.  Hit the jump for 8 clips from the film and a more detailed synopsis:

The saga of will Amanda Seyfried be the star of director Catherine Hardwicke’s The Girl With The Red Riding Hood is officially over, as she confirmed for me at this year’s ShoWest that she’s officially signed on to do the film.  She also confirmed she’s going to be in director Rodrigo Garcia’s Albert Nobbs movie with shooting taking place in Ireland before she begins The Girl With The Red Riding Hood.  Hit the jump to see exactly what she said:

2010 Sundance Film Festival Spotlight: First Images from MOTHER & CHILD Starring Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Jimmy Smits, and Samuel L. Jackson

Yesterday, we reported the list of films playing in the Spotlight category at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.  As we approach the beginning of the festival, first images and additional images are coming online for the films which playing in-and out-of-competition.  Today, the first images for Rodrigo Garcia’s (Passengers) new film Mother & Child came online and we’ve put them after the jump.

Mother & Child stars Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Kerry Washington, Jimmy Smits, and Samuel L. Jackson, and tells the story of three women – a physical therapist, the daughter she gave up at birth three decades ago, and an African American woman seeking to adopt a child of her own – and how they intersect in surprising ways.

The 2010 Sundance Film Festival will run from January 21-31^st.

2010 Sundance Film Festival Out-of-Competition Films: Spotlight

Yesterday we gave you a list of all the films playing in-competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.  We now have the list of the films playing out-of-competition and they’re divided up into four categories: Premieres, Next, Spotlight, and Park City at Midnight. Since combining these lists would be a lot to read for just one article, we’ve broken it up to make it easier on your eyes.  You’re welcome.

Films in the Spotlight category include Louis C.K.: Hilarious; Rodrigo Garcia’s Mother & Child starring Naomi Watts, Annette Benning, and Kerry Washington; the great-sounding documentary Winning Time: Reggie Miller vs. The New York Knicks; and Enter the Void, the new film from Gaspar Noé (Irreversible).  Films in the Park City at Midnight category include HIGH School starring Adrien Brody; and Buried starring Ryan Reynolds.

First Images from GET LOW and MOTHER AND CHILD

Over the last week I’ve posted tons of new images from all the movies premiering at this year’s Toronto Film Festival. While I thought I was done, this morning I was able to snag a few new images from “Get Low” and “Mother and Child”. Both films have great casts, and Bill Murray is in “Get Low”, which means you should care about it. What can I say, huge fan. Anyway, after the jump check out the images along with synopsis’ for both films.
