The fall season of television kicks off in just a couple weeks, but networks are still looking ahead to new series prospects. Deadline and EW have the early word on a new series from Ronald D. Moore, who previously partnered with David Eick on the series re-imagining of Battlestar Galactica. Though little is currently known about the series, it’s apparently a police procedural set in a world of magic not completely unlike Harry Potter, but with a predominantly adult cast. Sounds like a welcome departure from the traditional police dramas featuring cops with various psychological problems and ghosts from their past. It may even serve as a fine replacement for Law & Order since NBC canned that series recently. We’ll keep you posted as the project develops.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton will need to flee from the warmest place to hide (hint: it’s Man) as they’ve been cast to lead Matthijs Van Heijningen’s remake of/prequel to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 horror film, The Thing. Heat Vision reports that Winstead, “will play a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. When a trapped organism is freed and begins a series of attacks, she is forced to team with a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to stop the rampage.” I believe I speak for everyone who has seen Carpenter’s film when I say, “Good luck with that.”

I’m no horror aficionado but John Carpenter’s The Thing is definitely in my Top 5 scariest movies. Now Production Weekly is reporting that the prequel to the 1982 film will begin shooting this March in Toronto and continue filming through June. Director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. will be working from a script by Ronald D. Moore (the TV remake of Battlestar Galactica) and Eric Heisserer (the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street). For those who don’t remember, the 1982 film began with a Norwegian helicopter trying to kill a runaway dog only to have its pilot and passenger killed in the confusion. While The Thing eventually makes it clear why they were trying to kill the dog, Moore’s script focused on what led up to that helicopter chase. It’s unclear how much Heisserer changed and what they’re going for tonally with this prequel. I do hope the tagline for the prequel will be, “Okay, so it turns out there’s actually a warmer place to hide than man.”

Bryan Singer may be ready to reboot Battlestar Galactica (again) on the big screen, but the critically acclaimed Syfy series isn’t quite over. The show ended last Spring, but one last 90 minute special, Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, will be hitting DVD and Blu-ray October 27. Admiral Adama himself, Edward James Olmos directed the special, with Jane Espenson as a writer and executive producer. What it’s about and the DVD cover art after the jump.
“Battlestar Galactica” alumni and representatives of the United Nations spoke to a crowd of press and fans last Thursday at the Mann’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles. The presentation, entitled “Battlestar Galactica: TV’s Role In Making Global Issues Relevant” was hosted by The Los Angeles Times – The Envelope, a section of the paper focusing on entertainment news. The presentation itself was a follow-up to a similar event held at the United Nations headquarters in New York last year, highlighting Battlestar Galactica’s dramatic work on issues relevant to global concerns. But the event served a second purpose: coaxing The Academy to keep mindful of the acclaimed series’ four season run with The Emmys fast approaching.
The panel featured Ronald D. Moore (creator, executive producer), David Eick (executive producer), Mary MacDonald (President Rosalyn), Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama) and Craig C. Mokhiber (Deputy Director, New York Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights). The panel was hosted by The Los Angeles Time’s Geoff Boucher, entertainment critic, blogger and avid “Battlestar Galactica” fan.
After the jump is a detailed write-up of what happened.
