The feature film adaptation of the 1980s crime series The Equalizer just can’t catch a break.  Drive director Nicholas Winding Refn was initially attached to take the helm before departing the project in JanuaryRise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt subsequently entered early talks to direct late last month, but now it appears those talks have broken off as Deadline reports that a scheduling conflict forced Wyatt to drop out of the director’s chair.  Presumably the dates conflicted with Wyatt’s upcoming WWI drama Birdsong, which recently landed Nicholas Hoult as the lead.

Sony and Escape Artists are itching to get The Equalizer going and are expected to attach a new director shortly.  Denzel Washington has long been set as the lead as a former covert operations officer who dedicates his life to helping people in trouble.  Hopefully the next director attached to the project sticks.

It appears as though the feature film adaptation of The Equalizer may have found a director.  The adaptation of the 1980s crime series has seen a number of filmmakers flirt with the idea of taking the helm, with Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn most recently attached to direct before dropping out last month.  With an eye towards starting production in June and Denzel Washington set to star, Sony is ready to get this thing moving, and now it looks like Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt might be the man for the job as he’s entered early negotiations to take the helm.  Hit the jump for more.

It looks as though Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt has settled on his next project.  Wyatt had been attached to helm the Apes sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but he and Fox apparently didn’t see eye-to-eye on the future of the franchise and he was subsequently replaced by Matt Reeves.  Now ScreenDaily reports that Wyatt will helm an adaptation of author Sebastian Faulks’ World War I novel Birdsong.  The story spans three generations and centers on a young Englishman who strikes up a love affair with a French woman and then enters the war.

Wyatt wrote the script and will direct the film with Alan Moloney set to produce through Parallel, alongside Embankment.  The director had previously been eyeing the KGB spy movie Londongrad with Michael Fassbender in the lead, but its unknown how that project has progressed since.  Hit the jump to read a synopsis for the novel Birdsong.

Screenwriter Scott Z. Burns has been working on quite a few interesting projects over the past couple of years.  Director David Fincher enlisted the scribe to work on his big-budget remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Burns was also tapped to pen a draft of the Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.  Steve recently sat down with the screenwriter to talk about his upcoming thriller Side Effects, and during the course of the conversation Burns talked about the status of both 20,000 Leagues and Apes, discussing why Rupert Wyatt dropped out of the director’s chair for the Apes sequel.  Hit the jump to read on.

Although the release date is more than 18 months away, it looks like director Rupert Wyatt may be stepping away from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.  Wyatt directed the 2011 reboot/prequel, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and was expected to return for multiple sequels along with star Andy Serkis.  Now, reports are coming out that Wyatt is exiting the production with the explanation that he doesn’t feel comfortable making the expected release date of May 23, 2014.  Hit the jump for much more, including what this move means for the future of the sequel and for Wyatt’s career.

Scott Z. Burns to Write RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Sequel

Rise of the Planet of the Apes proved to be a sizable sleeper hit for Fox last summer. In an interview at CinemaCon, Fox CEO Tom Rothman told Steve that the studio was “pushing forward aggressively” on a sequel, in anticipation of a possible summer 2014 release date. Director Rupert Wyatt and star (no offense to James Franco) Andy Serkis were both already set to return; today comes news that Contagion and The Bourne Ultimatum scribe Scott. Z. Burns will write the script.

The first film saw a scientist (James Franco) experimenting on apes in search of a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. The result was super-intelligent chimp Caesar (Serkis), who, disgusted by the mistreatment he and his kind endure at the hands of man, leads an uprising. The sequel will, predictably, see Caesar and co. making use of their hard-won freedom to gain dominion over the planet (making it a sort of, “Planet of the Monkeys,” if you will). At this year’s CinemaCon, I was able to land an exclusive interview with Tom Rothman (Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fox Filmed Entertainment).  While we posted selected portions of the interview last week, after the jump you can read the entire conversation which covers a lot more than comic book movies.  I love getting to speak with actors and directors, but if you really want to find out which projects are moving forward and why certain decisions were made, a studio head has all the answers.

During the wide-ranging conversation we talked about 48 frames per second, the shift towards higher quality films on Fox’s slate, Prometheus (and it’s rating), Daredevil, Fantastic Four, the Chronicle sequel, The Wolverine, the Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel, a New Mutants movie, A Good Day to Die Hard (Die Hard 5), and more.  Hit the jump to read what he had to say.

20th Century Fox CEO Tom Rothman Says They Hope to Release RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Sequel in Summer 2014

Director Rupert Wyatt delivered a surprise hit with last summer’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  The franchise had been in cold storage since the atrocious Tim Burton remake but Fox decided to give the Apes another chance, and it paid off wonderfully (even though the film was flat-out robbed of the Best Visual Effects Oscar).  Although James Franco was the name on the marquee, the prequel made Caesar (Andy Serkis) the real star and Weta’s special effects geniuses helped bring the character to life.

Last November, we reported that 20th Century Fox was planning multiple sequels to the successful blockbuster with Wyatt and Serkis slated to return.  Steve recently interviewed the studio’s CEO, Tom Rothman, and learned that they’re hoping to get the next movie in theaters by summer 2014.  Hit the jump for more.

Charlize Theron to Star in Sci-Fi AGENT 13, Directed by RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES’ Rupert Wyatt

Rupert Wyatt soared out of Summer 2011 on the wave of critical and commercial success surrounding Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  The director has spoken about where he wants to take the sequel, and he is locked in for at least one more installment.  I would be surprised if he has time to squeeze in another project before Fox wants to get the next Apes movie in production, but Wyatt is smart to set up a few options while his stock is so high.  One possibility is the spy thriller Londongrad with Michael FassbenderVariety adds another promising prospect in Agent 13Charlize Theron is on board to star in the sci-fi actioner, which is enough to attract such fine studio suitors as Sony, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, and Fox.  The details of T.S. Nolan‘s script are under wraps, but like the studios, I too am presold once Wyatt and Theron team up for original science fiction.

Those itching to see Theron in sci-fi and/or action need only wait till June, when she’ll appear in both Snow White and the Huntsman (June 1) and Prometheus (June 8).

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Blu-ray Review

by     Posted: December 21st, 2011 at 6:58 am

One of the biggest surprises for me this year was Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of The Planet of The Apes, a film that I had steadfastly refused to see for weeks after its release:  The Apes franchise is not a franchise I have ever loved (or even liked), the inclusion of James Franco seemed beyond-ominous to me (and the trailers seemed to support my suspicions), and the fact that 20th Century Fox was selling their film on the gee-whiz sight of an ape fighting a helicopter seemed—at the time—like the very definition of absurd to me.  Ladies and gentlemen, it is time for me to eat some serious crow:  Rise of The Planet of The Apes is one of the year’s best films, a rare combination of “good ideas” and “holy crap” special effects that completely changed my opinion of what this franchise could be.  You should see it, but first, read on for my full review, after the jump.

Will the Apes Speak in RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Sequel?

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES slice

One of the most pleasant surprises of 2011 was Rise of the Planet of the Apes. While most expected it to be that forgettable monkey movie with James Franco, director Rupert Wyatt crafted one of the most enthralling films of the year. Fox has nabbed both Wyatt and actor Andy Serkis to return for a sequel, and all parties involved are hard at work on crafting the story. Screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver recently confirmed that they’re working on the sequel script, and they spoke a bit about what they’ve got planned, including the possibility of having the Apes talk. Hit the jump to see what they had to say.

APES Director Rupert Wyatt in Talks for KGB Flick LONDONGRAD; Michael Fassbender Circling Lead

by     Posted: November 4th, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Warner Bros. is apparently making moves on their spy-centered pic Londongrad. Variety reports that Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt is in talks to direct the film, which centers on the mysterious 2006 death of ex-KGB spy Alexander Litvinenko who was poisoned. In addition, Michael Fassbender is apparently circling the lead. Based on Alan Cowell’s book The Terminal Spy, the script was written by David Scarpa (The Last Castle) and centers on Litvinenko, who went public with accusations that Russian president Vladimir Putin was the one who ordered his death.

Wyatt turned heads when he delivered the thought-provoking and highly entertaining Apes, landing on a number of shortlists for high profile jobs (including WB’s The Twilight Zone, though Matt Reeves eventually landed the gig). The director is expected to return for the Apes sequel that began moving forward yesterday, but Londongrad should be his next pic. Fassbender hasn’t committed to the project just yet. He’s currently set to reteam with Shame director Steve McQueen on 12 Years a Slave. As a big fan of both Wyatt and Fassbender, I have to say I quite like this combination. Hit the jump for a synopsis of The Terminal Spy.
