Family Guy mastermind Seth MacFarlane’s next feature directorial effort is adding yet another impressive castmember.  MacFarlane’s Ted follow-up, A Million Ways to Die in the West, already has Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, and Giovanni Ribisi set to star alongside MacFarlane, and now Heat Vision reports that Sarah Silverman is in negotiations to join the cast.  The Western comedy centers on a cowardly farmer who backs out of a gunfight and subsequently loses his girlfriend (Seyfried).  He later meets the wife (Theron) of a notorious outlaw who teaches him how to shoot, but runs into trouble when her outlaw husband (Neeson) returns to town seeking revenge.

Should she sign on, Silverman would play the town prostitute who has had her way with just about everyone, “but refuses to have sex with her fiancé (Ribisi), believing that as Christians the couple should wait until marriage before lying down together.”  I’d say that’s pretty spot-on casting.  Production is set to begin this spring.  Hit the jump for casting news concerning the holiday comedy A Friggin’ Christmas Miracle

New Trailer and Images for Judd Apatow’s THIS IS 40 Starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann

A new trailer and images for director Judd Apatow‘s new film This Is 40 have been released.  The film follows Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann‘s characters from Knocked Up as they approach middle age.  The laughs aren’t as big here as they were in the first trailer, but I’m encouraged by the promise of a really sweet and candid story about family.  Rudd and Mann can walk the line between comedy and drama like few others, and Apatow has been trying to nail that James L. Brooks balance with his previous directorial features to varying degrees of success.  There’s a clear emotional throughline with This Is 40 that I think could be the key, and the pairing of Albert Brooks and Rudd as father and son is an inspired move that I’m eager to see play out.

Hit the jump to watch the new trailer and see the images.  The film also stars Albert Brooks, Megan Fox, Chris O’Dowd, Lena Dunham, Ryan Lee, Charlene Yi, Robert Smigel, Wyatt Russell, Melissa McCarthy and Jason Segel.  This Is 40 opens on December 21st.

The first trailer for Judd Apatow’s fourth directorial effort, This Is 40, has gone online.  The film is a semi-spinoff of Apatow’s Knocked Up, as it follows the lives of the characters played by Paul Rudd and Leslie MannThe 40-Year-Old Virgin is a new classic, I was a big fan of Knocked Up, and while Funny People certainly had its issues, I enjoyed it for the most part.  That said, this trailer for This Is 40 shows huge promise.  We already know that Rudd and Mann have impeccable chemistry, but I love the idea of Apatow tackling the issues of aging and mid-adulthood through his dramedic eye.  We get a look at a couple of the bit parts from Jason Segel and Melissa McCarthy (to great comedic effect) and the end showcases Rudd’s penchant for spot-on delivery.  It’s safe to say that in a very crowded holiday release schedule, This Is 40 just jumped up towards the top of my most anticipated list.

After seeing Bridesmaids, audiences and critics who enjoyed the film tended to agree that Melissa McCarthy would be one of the breakout stars of the year.  That easy prediction is already coming true with McCarthy and Bridesmaids co-write Annie Mumolo selling a pitch to Paramount, and McCarthy being rumored to co-star with Jon Hamm in a new Paul Feig/Judd Apatow comedy.  McCarthy will certainly be working with Apatow again, but he’ll be directing her in his untitled Knocked Up spin-off starring Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann.  THR reports that McCarthy will play a mom at the school where Rudd and Mann’s children attend and that Super 8 co-star Ryan Lee will play her son.

The untitled comedy also stars Albert Brooks, Megan Fox, Chris O’Dowd, Lena Dunham, Charlene Yi, and Wyatt Russell.  The film is set to open in December 2012.

Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths and Ryan Lee Interview SUPER 8 slice

With writer-director J.J. Abrams Super 8 opening tonight, I was recently able to interview the cast in London for our partners at Omelete.  While Abrams likes to keep his films under wraps while they’re in production, by now you know Super 8 takes place in the summer of 1979 and it’s about a group of friends that discovers something not from this world while making a super 8 film.  Mix in that it’s produced by Steven Spielberg, uses his Amblin logo (which should clue you into what kind of movie this is), and you’re got a great coming-of-age story that I think audiences are going to love.

During my interview with three of the kids (Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths and Ryan Lee), we talked about trying to keep the movie a secret, their reaction to seeing the finished film, filming the train sequence, what films did they watch before filming, how they got to help write and direct the super 8 zombie film within the film, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch.

SUPER 8 Review

J.J. Abrams Super 8 is an echo.  It echoes the innocence of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin films of the 1980s, it echoes the imagined purity of small town America, and it echoes the innocence and coming of age through the lens of aspiring filmmakers.  But Super 8 never makes its own noise. While the film manages to capture the fun, adventure, thrills, laughs, and characters of Spielberg’s movies, Super 8 never conjures its own magic.

With writer/director J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 opening next week, Paramount has released over twenty new images and you can check them out after the jump.  Here’s the synopsis:

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

With the embargo lifted, I can tell you Super 8 was great and it made me feel like a kid again.  If I was 12, Super 8 would probably be my favorite movie.  It really deserves the Amblin logo at the beginning…

J.J. Abrams Rounds Out the Main Cast of SUPER 8

I was thrilled with J.J. Abrams’ casting of the superlative Kyle Chandler (alongside Elle Fanning) in the Steven Spielberg-produced Super 8.  Neither Chandler nor Fanning is what you might call a household name, but it turns out they’ll be the most recognizable members of the cast.

According to Risky Business, Ron Eldard, Noah Emmerich, Gabriel Basso, Joel Courtney, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, and Zach Mills round out the main cast of the enigmatic thriller, which is said to revolve around “three siblings who discover footage of an alien in some Super 8 footage they shot.”  The relatively unknown nature of the cast makes for a fun journey on IMDB, which I try to recreate after the jump.
