SAFE HOUSE Review

There’s no problem with delivering a solid action thriller that doesn’t reinvent the genre, but Safe House goes through the motions without an ounce of creativity or flavor.  It’s the bare minimum of what an action movie should be and marches through gunfights and car chases because that’s what the genre requires, not what makes the film exciting.  Denzel Washington doesn’t add much by doing a tamer retread of his Training Day performance, and Ryan Reynolds is the film’s redeeming aspect as he tries to bring a little nuance and shading to his character.  But the main fault lays with director Daniel Espinosa, who knows how to make Safe House loud, but not much else.

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds to Play Margaret and Walter Keane in Tim Burton’s BIG EYES

Screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski first pitched the biopic Big Eyes to their Ed Wood director Tim Burton in August 2010.  We haven’t heard much about the project since then, but there was a big development today.  Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds are now attached to play Margaret and Walter Keane in the indie drama.  Walter became famous for paintings featuring saucer-eyed kids, though it was the shy Margaret who really did the work.  Margaret eventually tired of the misplaced credit, which led to a divorce and a heated court battle to prove authorship of the paintings.

Alexander and Karaszewski will direct Big Eyes, their fourth biopic script following Ed Wood, The People vs. Larry Flint, and Man on the Moon.  Burton is producing.  The trio is also working on a new version of The Addams Family.  Filming is scheduled for this spring.  Hit the jump for more on the story of the Keanes.

Has Fox Shot 8 Minutes of R-rated DEADPOOL Test Footage?

While it seems like we’re hit with an ever-increasing barrage of superhero movies each year, Deadpool is surely one of the most anticipated that’s yet to see the light of day. The film has been in the works for years now, and finally got some movement when visual effects guru Tim Miller was set as director last April. It’s a hard sell, as star Ryan Reynolds and those creatively involved are adamant that the feature be true to the comic and therefore rated R. Word on the project has been quiet for some time, but comic writer/illustrator Rob Liefeld recently let slip that he may or may not have seen eight minutes of test footage from the film. Details after the jump.

THE CHANGE-UP Blu-ray Review

by Scott Wampler    Posted: December 12th, 2011 at 6:17 am

David Dobkin’s The Change-Up arrived earlier this year following a marketing campaign pitched at the level of an out-of-control air siren, made a couple of bucks at the box office, and was then promptly forgotten about until now, when the film hit DVD and Blu-ray.  Admit it:  you didn’t even remember this film came out this year until you saw the title of this review.  You probably didn’t bother seeing it in theaters, but if you did, you’ve blocked it from your memory.  Now that it’s available on home video, you’ve got the option of either A) reliving the magic, or B) seeing Dobkin’s film for the very first time.  Should you?  Find out after the jump, folks.

New Trailer and Images for SAFE HOUSE Starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds

Universal has released the first trailer for the thriller Safe House starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds.  The story centers on a young CIA agent (Reynolds) who must team up with the dangerous criminal in order to survive when their safe house is destroyed by mercenaries.  The trailer goes heavy on the action, but it looks like director Daniel Espinosa (Snabba Cash) has done a great job.  But the biggest hook is the dynamic between Washington and Reynolds.  Few actors have as much fun playing the bad guy as Washington and he clearly relishes flipping between charm and malevolence on a dime.  My only complaint with the trailer is that it shows a little too much, but overall I like what I’m seeing.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and the larger version of the poster and image released yesterday, plus two new images.  The film also stars Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard, Vera Farmiga, Fares Fares, Robert Patrick, Nora Arnezeder, Liam Cunningham, Joel Kinnaman, and Ruben BladesSafe House opens February 10, 2012.

GREEN LANTERN Blu-ray Review

by Andre Dellamorte    Posted: October 25th, 2011 at 10:51 am

green-lantern-movie-poster-ryan-reynolds-slice-01

This summer we got a comic-book origin tale about a man with father issues accepting his role as guardian and protector of the universe fighting against his someone he thought was a brother, with the film featuring an unnecessary love interest and a supporting cast that should have had more to do, on top of sequences set in outer space. Actually, we got two of those.

Superficially, the resemblances between Paramount/Marvel’s Thor and Warner Brothers/DC’s Green Lantern are hard to ignore, but Thor was a modest hit (or at least not a belly flop), while Green Lantern was the weakest performer of the summer’s comic book films. Both aren’t that good, but both have similar things to recommend: the world, and their villains. Here Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, the cocky pilot who takes on the mantle of galactic defender, and must fight Parallax and Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) to keep Earth safe. Our review of Green Lantern on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Some new images have surfaced from the set of Robert Schwentke’s (Red) adaptation of the Dark Horse comic R.I.P.D. The film centers on dead cops who work for the “Rest in Peace Department,” with Ryan Reynolds playing a newly deceased cop and Jeff Bridges taking on the role of his partner, a seasoned R.I.P.D. veteran. The images give us another look at Reynolds and Bridges (who looks like a Civil War Colonel) hamming it up, and we get another peek at Kevin Bacon who’s playing the villain in the film.

Hit the jump to check out the images. The film also stars Mary Louise-Parker, Stephanie Szostak, Marissa Miller, and James Hong. R.I.P.D. opens on June 28th, 2013.

I know that we just posted photos from the set of R.I.P.D. yesterday, but they were missing one thing you Collider readers love: Jeff Bridges.  Bridges is looking particularly ragged (though sharp in white suspenders) as a seasoned veteran of the “Rest in Peace Department” populated by undead police officers.  Bridges and Ryan Reynolds play partners in film, seen here walking the streets of Boston.  Kevin Bacon, Mary Louise-Parker, Stephanie Szostak, Marissa Miller, and James Hong also star in the comic book adaptation directed by Robert Schwentke (Red).  R.I.P.D. is scheduled for release on June 28, 2013.

Hit the jump for the set photos, plus video of car-centric shots.

A couple weeks ago we brought you a short video of James Hong and Victoria’s Secret model Marisa Miller filming a scene, and today we’ve got images of Reynolds, Bacon, and a very red Dodge Challenger. Trailer for FIREFLIES IN THE GARDEN Starring Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe and Julia Roberts

A trailer for writer/director Dennis Lee’s drama Fireflies in the Garden has landed online. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Julia Roberts, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hayden Panettiere and Shannon Lucio, the film is a semi-autobiographical tale from Lee that focuses on the tumultuous relationships within the Taylor family that are confronted after a tragic car accident kills the matriarch (Roberts).

The film was actually completed back in 2008 and is just now making its way to theaters. Given the amount of star power it contains, I wouldn’t think that bodes well for the final product. That said, I think the cut on display here is plenty effective in setting up the tension between father (Dafoe) and son (Reynolds). Check out the trailer after the jump. Fireflies in the Garden will open to select markets on October 14th.

TOP 5: MAN OF STEEL, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, Len Wiseman, Jason Bateman & Ryan Reynolds, J.J. Abrams Updates STAR TREK 2

This week’s “Top 5″ is a special one for me. Before letting your imagination run away from you, I’ll just say that it’s not for any nostalgic reasons that connect back to the content at hand but rather because I’m writing it while literally in the midst of moving. For those who haven’t experienced this joyous task first-hand, this means that I’m currently a sweaty, disheveled, unorganized mess who can’t for the life of me figure out when/how/why I accumulated so much junk. For the record, Mom, I’m not referring to my posters. They’re awesome. Period. End of story.

All venting aside, this week’s installment features the first official look at Henry Cavill in director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, a video interview with director Len Wiseman where he discusses his Total Recall remake and the return of everyone’s favorite three-breasted woman, the first image of Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises along with a cornucopia of set photos from the film, an exclusive interview with Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds for The Change-Up, and a Star Trek 2 update from J.J. Abrams. You can find brief recaps and links to all of the above after the jump.

Trailer and Poster for THE WHALE Produced and Narrated by Ryan Reynolds

by Jason Barr    Posted: August 4th, 2011 at 7:03 pm

The trailer and poster for the Ryan Reynolds produced/narrated documentary The Whale have landed online. Directed by Suzanne Chisholm and Michael Parfit, the film is set on Vancouver Island and tells the story of Luna, a baby orca whale who begins socializing with local townspeople after being separated from her family. The directors began investigating Luna’s separation while on assignment for Smithsonian and The Whale is the result of their efforts to protect the animal. Although I can’t say the trailer and poster make The Whale seem like the most gripping documentary of all-time, it does seem to have a heart of gold that parents may be able to enjoy with their kids.

Check out the trailer, poster, some images, and a full synopsis for the film after the jump. The Whale will open to select U.S. theaters beginning September 9th in Seattle, the 16th in New York, and the 23rd in Washington DC.

THE CHANGE-UP Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 4th, 2011 at 2:47 pm

The body-switching comedy is a silly concept which is why it’s been resigned to family films.  Two people who don’t understand each other’s lives switch bodies through magical means and are given new appreciation for what the other does.  The Change-Up turns that concept on its head by re-setting it into a raunchy, gross-out R-rated film and making the characters look inward at to what they’re missing in their own lives rather than appreciating the person whose form they’ve taken.  The result is a film that’s painfully funny, quickly forgettable, and a little bit mean.

Exclusive: Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds Talk THE CHANGE-UP

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: August 3rd, 2011 at 3:20 pm

When I first heard that Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds were going to star in a body switching comedy, my first thought was, “Hasn’t this concept been beaten to death?”.  But, when I found out the guys who wrote The Hangover (Jon Lucas and Scott Moore) were writing the script and the director of Wedding Crashers (David Dobkin) was helming the project, I thought The Change-Up had the chance to be very funny.  And it is.  It’s actually the hardest I’ve laughed in a theater in a long time and I absolutely recommend checking out the movie this weekend.

Anyhow, I recently got to sit down with Bateman and Reynolds for an exclusive interview.  They talked about making the movie, the babies (you’ll understand after you see the movie), whether or not they were nervous to sign onto the project, the line between realism and “Hollywoodising” a scene, and a lot more.  Reynolds also gave me an update on R.I.P.D.. Hit the jump for more.
