Thought last weekend, when the comedy Think Like A Man took first place from the heavily-favored The Lucky One, was a surprise? Then check out this weekend’s estimates. Not only has Think Like A Man defied all expectations by holding the top spot for a second week; it did so by beating the heavily-favored rom-com The Five-Year Engagement from super-producer Judd Apatow. Could it be that post-racial America has finally arrived? Or is everyone just saving their money to see The Avengers? You be the judge.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | Think Like A Man | $18,400,000 | $60.8 |
| 2 | Pirates! Band of Misfits | $11,400,000 | $11.4 |
| 3 | The Lucky One | $11,325,000 | $39.9 |
| 4 | The Hunger Games | $11,250,000 | $372.4 |
| 5 | The Five-Year Engagement | $11,156,800 | $11.1 |
| 6 | Safe | $7,720,000 | $7.7 |
| 7 | The Raven | $7,250,000 | $7.2 |
| 8 | Chimpanzee | $5,460,000 | $19.1 |
| 9 | The Three Stooges | $5,400,000 | $37.1 |
| 10 | Cabin in the Woods | $4,500,000 | $34.6 |

What a difference 12 months makes. On this weekend in 2011, summer started early when the surprise blockbuster Fast Five sped past $86 million on its debut run. And this year? Out of four new wide releases on Friday, not one could challenge last weekend’s number one comedy Think Like A Man. Hell, none of them could beat last weekend’s number two movie The Lucky One, for that matter. Best effort came from the Judd Apatow-produced The Five-Year Engagement, which debuted with an estimated $3.5 million from 2,936 locations or about half of what was expected. Sony’s animated Pirates! Band of Misfits made it into the top five with $2.8 million (and could climb higher if family audiences turn out on Saturday); but both Lionsgate’s Safe and Relativity’s The Raven had to settle for ‘also-ran’ status with $2.6 and $2.5 million, respectively. Overall, it looks like a pretty lifeless weekend, which only means that we’ll have much more hyperbole to work with when The Avengers – which is already breaking records overseas – hits next Friday.
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | Think Like A Man | $5,500,000 | $48.4 |
| 2 | The Lucky One | $3,900,000 | $40.1 |
| 3 | The Five-Year Engagement | $3,500,000 | $3.5 |
| 4 | The Hunger Games | $3,000,000 | $372.4 |
| 5 | Pirates! Band of Misfits | $2,800,000 | $2.8 |

Lionsgate has released a new 60-second TV spot for the action film Safe starring Jason Statham. Going only by the TV spot, I’m not really sure what the plot is. I think Statham has to protect a little girl because she knows something. It’s the excuse for Statham’s character to beat people up, and I’m sure eventually we’ll reach the point where Statham’s movies are titled Jason Statham Kicky Punch Fun Time.

We’ve got a bunch of new images for you from the following projects:

We’re happy to share with you the exclusive poster premiere for Lionsgate’s actioner Safe. Jason Statham stars as an ex-cop from New York who witnesses the attempted abduction of a 12-year-old girl. After rescuing her, Statham’s character learns that the girl has memorized a code that the Triads, the Russian Mafia, and corrupt New York officials all want. Directed by Boaz Yakin (Remember the Titans), the film also stars Anson Mount, Chris Sarandon, Reggie Lee and James Hong. Hit the jump to check out the first poster. Safe opens April 27th.

Criminals are now so afraid of Jason Statham that they’re mobilizing an entire city to take him down…and it still might not be enough. In a new trailer for Safe, just released from Lionsgate, Statham plays Luke Wright, an ex-cop from New York who witnesses some tough guys attempting to abduct a twelve-year-old girl. After rescuing her, Wright learns that the girl has memorized a code and that the Triads, Russian Mafia and corrupt NYC officials all want it. They’ll do anything to get it, but they’ll have to go through Wright first.
Directed by Boaz Yakin (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time), Safe also stars Anson Mount (Straw Dogs), Chris Sarandon (Fright Night), Reggie Lee (Grimm) and James Hong (Blade Runner). Safe opens up on March 2, 2012. If you’re a fan of Statham, you’ll want to hit the jump and check out this trailer.

Time to catch up with the release dates the studios have announced over the last couple weeks. Via Box Office Mojo:
More on each movie after the jump.

We’ve got three action-heavy posters tonight. First up is Safe, in which Jason Statham plays “a former elite agent who fights to rescue a 12-year-old girl (Catherine Chan).” Next up is Vehicle 19, starring and executive produced by Paul Walker. The new promo poster is accompanied by the first synopsis for the film, which identifies Walker as a recently parolee who gets into trouble with crooked cops when he picks up the wrong rental car. Last up is Machine Gun Preacher, based on the true story of Sam Childers (played by Gerard Butler), “a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds an unexpected calling as the savior of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children.”

Lionsgate has scheduled Safe starring Jason Statham for release on October 28 where it faces Now and The Rum Diary in wide release. Statham plays “a former elite agent who fights to rescue a 12-year-old girl.” Catherine Chan plays the girl; Chris Sarandon, Robert John Burke, Reggie Lee, and Danny Hoch also star. Boaz Yakin (Death in Love) directed from his own screenplay. According to Variety, this is the first of a three-picture distribution between Lionsgate and IM Global — the other two are Dredd and Protection, both dateless.
Statham will next be seen in Blitz, which debuts overseas later this week — no North American release date is currently scheduled. Statham is also tapped to play a former Navy Seal The Killer Elite, and an ex-SAS agent in both Echelon and The Expendables 2.

If you’re a fan of Jason Statham action films, you’ll be happy to know his latest movie, a remake of The Mechanic, opens this weekend. Like the 1972 Charles Bronson film that it’s based on, Statham plays a ‘mechanic’, which is “an elite assassin with a strict code and unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets.” Unlike some remakes that stray far from the original, Statham’s remake uses the same plot, but updates all the technology and kills. Also, Simon West directed (Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) the film so the action is well done. I actually thought the remake was a lot of fun and casting Ben Foster to play the apprentice was a smart move as he’s a very talented actor that brings a lot to the role. Anyway, I recently participated in a roundtable interview with Statham and you can either read a transcript or listen to the audio after the jump. During the interview with the press shy action star, Statham talked about where his career is going, what it was like to make The Mechanic, his preparation process, upcoming movies like Safe and The Expendables 2, does he ever think Crank 3 could happen, and a lot more:
