In 2011, The Amazing Spider-Man went to Comic-Con, and showed off the first footage of The Lizard (the reaction on Twitter from my peers seemed to be “That looks like Killer Croc, and I hope they do more work on the CGI”). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to kick off the 2014 summer movie season, and so it looks like Sony is bringing the movie for a panel at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con, which runs from July 18 – 21st. Jamie Foxx, who plays the villain Electro, tells Yahoo! Movies, “Now I’m just waiting to get to Comic-Con and see how people respond to it.” People will probably be enthusiastic. They love Spider-Man, and while The Amazing Spider-Man is a misfire, it didn’t kill off interest in the reboot. There’s still a great cast, and hopefully the script is stronger this time around.
The film also stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Dane DeHaan, Shailene Woodley, Paul Giamatti, Felicity Jones, Chris Cooper, and Sally Field. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.

Anything that I write this week will ultimately prove miniscule and severely unimportant in the wake of the Aurora, CO tragedy. While it’s an unfortunate truth that lives are senselessly lost every day for reasons that defy any and all logic, the fact that this particular incident took place in an atmosphere so many us of cherish and during an event that was so genuinely anticipated has made this all too familiar story one that really hits home. All of this said, I’ll refrain from pretending to know or understand the first thing about what the victims of the shooting are going through. Instead, I’ll just offer my sincerest condolences to all those involved.
In an impossible segue, this week’s Top 5 is headlined by The Dark Knight Rises while also shining our weekly spotlight on The Punisher‘s new short film Dirty Laundry, the first poster and new trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master, Joss Whedon taking out a giant one-eyed monster in the 5-year-old inspired short film Scary Smash, and an ode to our nearly infinite supply of Comic-Con 2012 coverage. A link and brief recap for each rests after the jump.

With Robert Downey Jr knocking it out of the park in theaters and Benedict Cumberbatch doing no wrong in the role across the pond, I wondered why the world needed another interpretation of Sherlock Holmes. Watching the Pilot episode of Elementary, I snickered at its cheeky bits and admired the performances of both Jonny Lee Miller as Holmes and Lucy Liu as Watson. Miller’s Holmes is very much in the mold of a Dr. Gregory House, a brilliant mind more concerned with the truth than convention. In fact, he’s a recovering addict and Ms. Watson has been assigned as his sober companion. Liu said that Watson uses her sober companion position to distract her from her own issues, but Holmes sees right through her. Find out why it’s moved up my DVR list after the break.

ABC’s freshman series Once Upon a Time came to Comic-Con as TV’s highest rated new drama and entertained their growing fan base. The panel, which included creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, also talked about characters and storylines in the upcoming second season. Stars attending included Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas, Ginnifer Goodwin, Lana Parilla, Meghan Ory and Emilie de Ravin. The cast of Futurama definitely wins the non-existent Comic-Con award for fan appreciation and involvement. The panelists not only revealed a look at an upcoming episode, but treated the audience to a drawing contest between creator Matt Groening and director Steven Sandoval. They even rewarded the fans in the audience who were dressed as Futurama characters by handing out swag and signed drawings by Groening himself. Panelists also included Lauren Tom, Maurice LaMarche, Billy West, John DiMaggio and writers Patrick Verrone and David X. Cohen. Moderator Chris Hardwick guided a packed Hall H through the approach of the next season (series, if you’re British) of Doctor Who and the coming departure of companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill). Gillan and Darvill were joined on stage by the Doctor (Matt Smith), Showrunner Steven Moffat and Executive Producer Caroline Skinner. Fans were treated to clips from two upcoming episodes as well as some teases for what’s in store.
In addition to a look back on a powerful scene between Gillan and Darvill from The Girl Who Waited, fans were also shown clips from A Town Called Mercy (a Western-themed episode shot in Spain) and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship (which includes both the lovelies mentioned in the title as well as Rory’s father accompanying the Doctor’s gang). More after the break.

The cast and creative team of Fox’s Family Guy were on hand at Comic-Con today to raunch up the jokes and completely ignore the sign that panelists should respect that there are folks under the age of 18 in the audience. As creator and star Seth MacFarlane quipped, “If you’re under 18 and you’re in this room, it’s already too late for you.” Joining him were Alex Borstein, Seth Green, Mike Henry, Mila Kunis and executive producer Steve Callahan. The most entertaining portion of the panel came when the cast ripped into insane audience members, but a few sneak peeks were also present. Now entering their 25th year, The Simpsons entertained fans at Comic-Con in a panel that included Matt Groening, Yeardley Smith and Al Jean, moderated by David Mirkin. The animated series American Dad is entering its ninth season and appeared at a Comic-Con panel to give the audience a sneak peek. The panel opened with a psychedelic clip show that was half preview and half fan appreciation. Patrick Stewart himself introduced the sequence and some of the flashed clips included the various faces and costumes of Roger (Seth MacFarlane), a suicidal lemur, various attempts by Stan to jump a chasm and a tearful farewell from Roger. The panel featured MacFarlane, Wendy Schaal, Scott Grimes, Rachael MacFarlane, Dee Bradley Baker, Mike Barker, Jordan Blume and Matt Weitzman. Every panel that comes to Hall H wants to recreate the success of Iron Man, a franchise was began its journey to a worldwide phenomenon in a room that holds 6,500 screaming fans. I didn’t attend the first Iron Man panel, but I was here for Iron Man 2, and it blew the audience away. I can still remember the audience losing its mind when they saw the shot of Iron Man and War Machine fighting back-to-back. And then you have Robert Downey Jr. who knows how to work a crowd of screaming fanboys and fangirls like few others. It’s a spectacular show, and while Iron Man 2 was ultimately a letdown, hope has been renewed with Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) as the new co-writer and director. Everyone knows Iron Man has been king of Hall H, but can it keep its crown??
