Comic-Con 2009 is Over. Or is it? Steve Explains

I’m finally home. After spending the last few days in San Diego at Comic-Con, I can say this year’s Convention was one of the best I’ve ever been to. I saw some great footage, interviewed a ton of people, and got to visit Flynn’s Arcade from “Tron”. The only thing I can say that’s a negative is…I wish I could have attended more panels. Unfortunately, this year had so much going on that you had to pick what was most important to you and let go of the rest. So while it pained me to miss the “Lost” panel and the “Avatar” footage, I decided to focus on landing as many exclusive interviews as I could. More after the jump:

UPDATED AGAIN! – TRON Goes Viral – Could Flynn’s Arcade be at Comic-Con 2009?

Tron comic-con 2009 viral coins - flynns arcade.jpg

Like many other websites, Collider received a package this morning from San Diego and inside were two coins and a flash drive. As you can see, the coins are related to the movie “Tron” and they say ‘Flynn’s Arcade’ on one side and ‘Home of Tron’ on the other. Since Disney is promoting the sequel to “Tron” at this year’s Comic-Con, this package can only mean one thing: something very special is being planned for convention goers and these coins are the key. Walt Disney Studios has just announced their 2009 Comic-Con plans and it’s filled with “firsts”. That’s because Hayao Miyazaki, John Lasseter, Robert Zemeckis and Tim Burton will take part in their first ever Comic-Con. If you’re a fan of any of these guys, it should be a hell of a presentation.

Also, with the abundance of great projects at Disney right now, their footage is going to be some of the highlights of the convention. According to the press release, they’re showing footage from “Ponyo”, all the “Toy Story” movies, “A Christmas Carol”, “The Princess and the Frog”, “Beauty and the Beast in 3D”, “Alice in Wonderland”, and “TRON”! If you thought last year’s “Tron” footage was cool, I promise you this year is going to blow you away.

Director Ruben Fleischer Interview ZOMBIELAND

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: July 7th, 2009 at 12:38 am

zombieland_collage_01.jpg

A few months ago I went to the set of director Ruben Fleischer’s “Zombieland”. While on set, we only got a few minutes to talk with Ruben as he was quite busy setting up shots and keeping production moving. So instead of just being able to post the brief quotes we got on set, Columbia Pictures set up a phone interview a few days ago and after the jump is the transcript.

During the interview, Ruben talked about how he got into the business, what’s the plan for Comic-Con, Twitter, what were the big challenges in making his debut movie, and what he might do next. It’s a great interview so take a look.

ABC Wants You To Write An Opening Theme Song for LOST

Before you freak out and think that the final season of “Lost” is going to have an opening theme song, relax.  They’re not looking to change the ominous title-zoom or anything like that.  But IF “Lost” had a theme song, they’re looking to the fans to find out what it would be.  Would it be a “Dallas”-like riff or maybe a pop-music-inspired ditty.  Or perhaps just the theme from “Gilligan’s Island” (although I’m pretty sure you’re not allowed to submit that as your own composition).

The winner will get their tune played at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con “Lost” panel in Hall H on Saturday, July 25th in front of 6,000 adoring fans who will then twitter about how much they hated your tune.  Of course, this is all totally moot since College Humor already made up a theme song for “Lost”.

While it’s not on the official Comic-Con website, many producers/directors/actors have begun talking about when they’ll be in San Diego and thanks to E Online, Seat 42F, and Dollverse, an early schedule has been put together.

Fox to Show Extended 3D Scenes of AVATAR at San Diego Comic-Con

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: June 4th, 2009 at 9:37 pm

sdcc.jpgWhile it’s been rumored for some time, a trusted source tells us that Fox will be showing extended 3D scenes from James Cameron’s upcoming film, “Avatar” at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.  We don’t know how much we’ll be seeing but I sure like that word “extended” (there are so many commercials that use it when talking about making a man “larger”, whatever that means).  We don’t know where they’re showing this footage and if it will be for the public or just press.  It’s possible they could show it in Hall H, but the difficulty there is projection.  3D projectors ain’t cheap and it’s not like Hall H just has one really big screen.  It’s a big stage with lots of flat panel monitors hung from the ceiling and scaffolding that falls on your editor-in-chief.  So what then?  Do they get one of the larger conference rooms and try to just keep cycling people through to watch footage and then return their glasses for other people to use (eeeewwwww)?  Or do they rent a local theatre and use that to show footage?

Either way, “Avatar” isn’t going to be the only film that needs to find a way to show off 3D footage.  As the technology becomes more prevalent, other studios are going to need a way to show off their 3D footage to the unwashed masses of convention-goers.  There’s already word that we’ll be seeing a brand new trailer for “TRON” and keep in mind that Steve lost his already fragile mind when he saw the 3D test footage for the film at “ShoWest”.  Throw in films like “Toy Story 3″, “Alice in Wonderland”, or really any upcoming film either from Disney or DreamWorks Animation in addition to anyone else that has a 3D movie and it’s not unrealistic to think that 3D is going to have a presence at Comic-Con and “Avatar”, more than any other 3D movie, wants to make that presence known.
