Young actress Saoirse Ronan is set to star in an adaptation of Meg Rosoff’s novel How I Live Now. Variety reports that The Last King of Scotland helmer Kevin Macdonald is onboard to direct, from a script by Jeremy Brock (The Last King of Scotland) and Tony Grisoni (best name ever). The period drama tells the story of Daisy, a teenage girl from New York City who travels to England in order to spend the summer with family. World War II breaks out and Daisy and another young girl find themselves attempting to survive alone in the woods as they search for safety.
Ronan was fantastic in this year’s Hanna, and this role sounds like it’s right in her wheelhouse. The actress has been busy as of late, as she’s currently filming Neil Jordan’s Byzantium. Ronan is also set to star in Andrew Niccol’s adaptation of the Stephanie Meyer sci-fi novel The Host. Hit the jump to read a synopsis for How I Live Now.

The first word I would use to describe Hanna would of course be basdass. Taking what Chloe Grace Moretz accomplished in Kick-Ass to a whole new level of insane, director Joe Wright pushes the little-girl assassin sub-genre into a way more mature and refined world, and everything is simply stunning. The fight choreography is tight and visceral, the editing is sharp and precise, and the music/sound editing collaborates perfectly with the story. Along with very affecting cinematography and enchanting acting throughout, Hanna is easily one of my favorite films of the year. To check out my review of the DVD hit the jump.

The concept of an adorable female assassin is nothing new. I’m pretty sure that at least half of all anime is based on this premise. The appeal is that you juxtapose wide-eyed innocence and blood-drenched experience. However, it’s an idea that’s been done to near-death (see: anime, +50%) and I was curious to see how Oscar-winning screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious) would handle adorable-assassins in his directorial debut Violet & Daisy. Fletcher has delivered a script was tons of potential for a fun action-comedy that doesn’t blow the genre apart but manages to do a solid job of staying playful and upbeat with the talented Saoirse Ronan and James Gandolfini selling the dramatic aspects of the story. Unfortunately, Fletcher is constantly hamstrung by his lack of experience, budgetary constraints, and Alexis Bledel’s lackluster performance.

Damsels in Distress (starring Greta Gerwig and Adam Brody), Goon (starring Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, and Liev Schreiber), Page Eight (starring Bill Nighy, Rachel Weisz, and Ralph Fiennes), and Violet & Daisy (starring Saoirse Ronan, Alexis Bledel, and James Gandolfini) are all playing at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. We have images for these films. We think you’d like to see them.

Open Road Films has announced that it will release writer/director Andrew Niccol’s (The Truman Show) adaptation of the Stephanie Meyer novel, The Host, on March 29th, 2013. Per the press release, the film will begin principal photography in February 2012 and will shoot in Louisiana and New Mexico. Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) is attached to star in the pic which is set during a time in which Earth has been invaded by an unseen enemy that uses human bodies as “hosts.” Ronan will play Melanie, a young girl who refuses to give up possession of her mind to an “invading soul” named Wanderer.
Check out the official press release after the jump. Niccol’s sci-fi drama In Time stars Amanda Seyfried, Justin Timberlake, and Cillian Murphy. That pic is currently slated for a release later this year on October 28th.

News out of the Cannes Film Festival suggests that vampire movies are not quite dead yet. Director Neil Jordan and producer Stephen Woolley will reteam for the all-in-the-family vampire pic, Byzantium. Based on an original script by Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre), Byzantium is the story of a deadly pairing of a mother vampire (Arterton) who turns her daughter (Ronan). In addition to the principal cast members, Byzantium also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse).

Saoirse Ronan is one of the best young actors working today and she’s managed to give impressive performances regardless of whether she’s in a great film (Hanna) or an atrocious one (The Lovely Bones). Here’s hoping that The Host is the former because Deadline is reporting that Ronan has landed the lead role. Based on the novel by Twilight author Stephanie Meyer, The Host is about an alien species called “Souls” that latch on to human hosts, destroy their consciousness, and erase their personalities. Ronan would play Melanie Stryder, one of the remaining free humans who is captured by the aliens and implanted with a Soul called “Wanderer”. Wanderer intends to make Stryder give up the location of her cohorts, but instead becomes impressed by Melanie’s unwillingness to surrender her consciousness, and Wanderer becomes driven to connect the young woman to her former life.
Writer Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show) wrote the script and was set to direct before moving on to the sci-fi drama Now starring Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake. But since that film is now mostly finished, it’s possible that Niccol may return to The Host. Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Focus Features has released some artwork inspired by Joe Wright’s latest film Hanna. The studio sought out artists who “could capture the spirit of the characters and bring them to life in their own mediums.” The resulting product is pretty damn cool. Hanna stars Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana.

Director Joe Wright has finally proved he’s a force to be reckoned with. Atonement was undercut by a poor script and his direction on The Soloist overpowered the story and the performances, but with his latest film Hanna, he finally strikes an impressive balance and transforms a standard revenge flick into an effective and surreal dark fairy tale that punches the landscape almost as hard as its protagonist punches her foes. Hanna is a film that defiantly and confidently plays by its own rules and the result is an action flick that is as thoughtful as it is exhilarating.

With director Joe Wright’s (Atonement) action/survival film Hanna opening this weekend, I recently got to speak with most of the cast. Starring Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana, the film tells the story of a 16-year-old trained assassin (Ronan) whose perpetual fleeing an intelligence agent takes her across Europe. Like I said when I posted the clips, I thought Hanna was fantastic and Ronan gives an amazing performance. In addition, the music by The Chemical Brothers fits the movie perfectly. Definitely recommended.
During my interview with Ronan, we talked about the challenges of this role and how she prepared, if she could go back to any of the places they filmed where would she go and why, what’s her karaoke song, and more. Hit the jump to watch.

After seeing the fantastic footage from Green Lantern and Cowboys and Aliens earlier today and yesterday, I was afraid that all the other presentations at WonderCon would pale in comparison. However, when I sat down for the Hanna panel, I found out I was dead wrong. Hit the jump for my thoughts on the footage and panel from the Hanna presentation.

Focus Features has given us 5 clips from director Joe Wright’s (Atonement) action/survival film Hanna. Starring Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, and Eric Bana, the film tells the story of a 16-year-old trained assassin (Ronan) whose perpetual fleeing an intelligence agent takes her across Europe. While I’m embargoed from saying too much, I don’t think Focus will be upset if I tell you I thought Hanna was fantastic. Also, the music by The Chemical Brothers fits the movie perfectly. I’ve been listening to the soundtrack for the past few days almost nonstop. Definitely recommended.

Universal took the early lead in casting their Snow White adaptation with dibs on Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, and Viggo Mortensen for the lead roles. But talks with Mortensen have since entered a rough patch, and Relativity has seized the opportunity to push their own Snow White movie to the forefront. Armie Hammer (The Social Network) has closed a deal to play Prince Andrew Alcott in The Brothers Grimm: Snow White. Hammer is the second official cast member, joining Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Of course, that leaves the title role: Saoirse Ronan is in talks to play Snow White for director Tarsem Singh (The Fall). In the script by Melissa Wallack and Jason Keller, “Snow White bands together with seven dwarfs to reclaim her kingdom.” More after the jump:

You don’t want to mess the women featured on tonight’s set of posters. Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones) plays a young girl trained by her ex-CIA father (Eric Bana) to be the perfect assassin in Hanna, directed by Joe Wright (Atonement). Ronan upgrades from bow and arrow on the first poster for Hanna to a cocked handgun.
The weapon technology wielded by Michelle Williams lies somewhere in between, with a shotgun pointed about three people to the left of us (phew) to promote Meek’s Cutoff. The western is set in 1845, the earliest days of the Oregon Trail: Williams is among three families that hire Stephen Meek (Bruce Greenwood) to lead them on a troubled journey over the Cascade Mountains. Kelly Reichardt (Wendy and Lucy) directs.
