Scott Speedman Talks THE CAPTIVE, His Complicated Character, the Backstory He Created, Upcoming Projects, and More

by     Posted 6 days ago

Scott Speedman enjoys portraying flawed men who are pushed to the limit, make mistakes, and then have to recover, and his character in Atom Egoyan’s new psychological thriller, The Captive, definitely fits the bill.  Speedman plays Detective Jeffrey Cornwall, an edgy cop who makes a living hooking predators and searching for missing children online.  He’s immediately skeptical of Matthew Lane’s (Ryan Reynolds) story about his missing daughter (Alexia Fast), and his suspicions that the father is somehow complicit in the abduction lead him to push way beyond the ethical boundaries of his work.  Mireille Enos, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Durand and Bruce Greenwood also co-star.

At the film’s recent press day, Speedman spoke about his creative collaboration with Egoyan with whom he worked previously on Adoration, how Egoyan wrote the role specifically with him in mind, why he was drawn to the complicated character and enjoyed the challenge of an enigmatic story, the backstory he created for his character, his research with the Kitchener-Waterloo detectives, working with Reynolds and Dawson, how they had fun while doing serious work on a dark movie, and his upcoming films:  October Gale, a romantic thriller with Patricia Clarkson, and Out of the Dark, a horror-thriller with Julia Stiles.  Check out our interview after the jump:

Atom Egoyan’s THE CAPTIVE Fails to Captivate Cannes

by     Posted 217 days ago

A perennial favorite at the Cannes Film Festival, Atom Egoyan returns this year to the official competition with The Captive, a psychological thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Durand, Mireille Enos, Scott Speedman, Rosario Dawson and Bruce Greenwood in a cameo.  Despite the beauty of its atmospheric visuals, the movie failed to impress.  It was largely panned by the critics at its screening this week, leaving them with mixed feelings, some even booing as the end credits began to roll.

The synopsis sounded promising: Eight years after the disappearance of Cassandra, some disturbing indications pop up in the hotel rooms her mother cleans, indicating she may still be alive. Atom Egoyan was inspired by a real-life story, but stretched his imagination to include the “big brother is watching you” notion.  Hit the jump for more.

New Trailers and Posters for FOXCATCHER, THE ROVER, and THE CAPTIVE

by     Posted 248 days ago

Earlier today, the lineup for the 2014 Cannes Film Festival was announced, which means that marketing materials are going online, or in the case of Bennett Miller‘s Foxcatcher, back online.  A teaser trailer was released last fall, but then Sony pulled it shortly before announcing that the film would be pushed back to 2014.  Now that the movie is playing in competition at Cannes, the Foxcatcher trailer is back online, and I highly recommend watching it if you haven’t already.  There are also new posters and trailers David Michôd’s upcoming thriller The Rover starring Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, and for Atom Egoyan‘s The Captive starring Ryan Reynolds and Mireille Enos.  Both films look fascinating, and I’m eager to hear the reaction to all of these pictures after they play at Cannes.

Hit the jump to check out the trailers and posters.  The Rover opens in New York and L.A. on June 13th and goes nationwide on June 20th.  Domestic release dates have yet to be announced for Foxcatcher and The Captive.

ABC Cancels LAST RESORT and 666 PARK AVENUE, Gives THE NEIGHBORS a Full-Season Order

by     Posted 2 years, 34 days ago

ABC will let freshman dramas Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue finish out their 13-episode seasons before giving them the ax. The network recently picked up two additional scripts for each show, but decided to pass on a renewal due to underwhelming ratings. Co-creators Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and Karl Gajdusek spoke recently on the challenges of keeping the rogue submarine drama Last Resort afloat, but the network has torpedoed it. (Apologies for the nautical puns; I’m out of my depth.)

Fans of the show will be able to see the first season of Last Resort, starring Andre Braugher and Scott Speedman, air in its entirety in its original time slot of Thursdays at 8pm. Don’t feel too bad for Ryan, who has the Beverly Hills Cop series in development at CBS with Eddie Murphy and Brandon T. Jackson attached. Ryan also has a U.S. Marshal project underway at TNT. Hit the jump for more on the demise of 666 Park Avenue and the upcoming slate of new shows on ABC.

Robert Patrick Talks LAST RESORT, How Much Fun He Has on the Show, His Character’s Storyline, Surviving on a Submarine and Filming GANGSTER SQUAD

by     Posted 2 years, 63 days ago

The new ABC drama series Last Resort, from co-creators Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and Karl Gajdusek, tells a suspenseful, emotional and action-packed story about what happens when a U.S. submarine crew receives an order to fire nuclear weapons at a foreign country, and then ignores that order.  With nowhere left to turn, Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) and XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) take the sub on the run and bring the men and women of theColorado to an island where they will find refuge, as they try to clear their names and get back home.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Robert Patrick – who plays Master Chief Joseph Prosser, a career military man and longtime confidant to the Captain, as well as the designated leader of all enlisted crew on the Colorado – talked about how much fun he’s having on what he sees as a very important show, how he views his character, what’s to come for his storyline, whether or not he thinks he could survive on a submarine himself, and what he thinks it is, in himself, that leads people to cast him as tough guys and villains.  He also talked about the experience of making Gangster Squad, due out in theaters on January 11, 2013.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Watch the Full Pilot for Shawn Ryan’s LAST RESORT Before it Debuts on ABC

by     Posted 2 years, 101 days ago

ABC is continuing the trend set forth by its broadcast brethren to air some of their Fall pilots online before their official premiere dates.  NBC did it with Revolution, and CBS has done it with Elementary, so now ABC is in the game offering up their military drama Last Resort to online viewers.

Last Resort was created by Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and stars Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street) and Scott Speedman (Felicity) as two Navy officers who refuse a mysterious order to fire missiles at Pakistan, making their submarine an enemy of the state.  For more on the series and to watch the premiere episode, hit the jump.

New Poster and Trailer for Mary Harron’s THE MOTH DIARIES

by     Posted 2 years, 300 days ago

Director Mary Harron has been working mainly in television since her 2000 cult classic, American Psycho, but is back this year with a new adaptation. The Moth Diaries, seemingly a foray into vampire lore, was adapted from a novel by Rachel Klein. The story follows two sixteen-year-old best friends at an all-girls boarding school whose relationship is shaken up by the arrival of a new and mysterious student. Rebecca (Sarah Bolger) must determine whether the newcomer, Ernessa (Lily Cole) is just trying to separate her from her Lucie (Sarah Gadon) or if her reasons are much more sinister. The Moth Diaries, also starring Scott Speedman (Underworld), will be available on iTunes, VOD and other digital hubs starting March 20th, with a theatrical release on April 20th. Hit the jump to see a new trailer and poster.

New Trailer for THE VOW Starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum

by     Posted 3 years, 34 days ago

A new trailer for the drama The Vow has been released. Based on a true story, the film stars Rachel McAdams as a woman who loses all her recent memory in a car crash, including that of her husband played by Channing Tatum. The film focuses on McAdams trying to get her life back, anchored by Tatum’s struggle to make her fall in love with him again. This trailer centers a bit more on the whole “courting” aspect of the film, and is a great deal less depressing than the first one which was basically McAdams giving Tatum the “I don’t know you, go away” face over and over again. McAdams is a talented actress, and I’m sure the movie will do big business on its Valentine’s Day release date, but I’m not really seeing much here to get the male moviegoers in the seats (at least willingly).

Direct by Michael Sucsy (Grey Gardens), the film also stars Sam Neil, Scott Speedman, and Jessica Lange. The Vow opens February 10th.

In all likelihood, you’ve never even heard of Jacob Tierney’s Good Neighbors, and if you have, it’s probably because you’ve heard that the film features Jay Baruchel (who generally appears in films playing characters that can best be described as “a real-life Professor Frink from The Simpsons”) in a rare (somewhat) dramatic role.  Or maybe you’re a Scott Speedman megafan, and the film ended up on your radar that way.  Doesn’t matter.  Point is, we’re talking about Good Neighbors now, and if you’ll join me after the jump, I’ll tell you why the film’s worth a rental (if not a purchase).

Every so often Hollywood produces a grand-scale film with a sweeping narrative and epic storyline that it becomes destined for greatness. No, not summer blockbusters, like Avatar or The Dark Night, with budgets in the hundreds of millions.  The storylines are not epic in the sense that they make way for explosions and breathtaking action, but rather they follow a simple character, and detail every little aspect of their incredible lives. Like The Cider House Rules, The World According to Garp, Forrest Gump, and countless others, these films often contain Academy Award-winning or nominated performances, and usually a best picture nomination or win. They go on to be considered classics and live on in lists detailing the best films of all time. Barney’s Version is one of these films, and it needs to be one that goes on these lists.

With its release on Blu-ray, Barney’s Version has a chance to become the hit it deserves, and gain the recognition and acclaim that are justified for such a film. If you haven’t yet seen or heard of this movie, check out the review and watch it immediately afterwards. My review of this masterpiece of cinema on Blu-ray after the jump.

First Trailer and Poster for GOOD NEIGHBORS Starring Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, and Scott Speedman

by     Posted 3 years, 217 days ago

Magnolia has released the first trailer and poster for Good Neighbors, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival late last year.  Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, and Scott Speedman star as three tenants in the same building.  The exact nature of the story is hard to pin down based on the trailer, except that the plot is driven by the secrets and fear of our main characters.  This is the second time writer/director Jacob Tierney has worked with Baruchel following The Trotsky, and he appears to have a knack for harnessing Baruchel’s innate weirdness for the purposes of evil.

I feel like I am doing a terrible job at selling this.  In my defense, the official TIFF description warns, “Good Neighbors may sound like a thriller, but its relationship to the genre is quite complicated.”  So I’ll be more direct: the trailer is worth your time.  Watch it after the jump.

Paul Giamatti and Rosamund Pike Exclusive Video Interview BARNEY’S VERSION

by     Posted 3 years, 342 days ago

Opening this weekend, in limited release, is a great movie called Barney’s Version.  Based on Mordecai Richler’s prize-winning comic novel, the movie is about four decades, two continents, and the three wives of Barney Panofsky (played to perfection by Paul Giamatti).  Without saying too much, the film follows Barney’s long and colorful life and over the course of two hours, we really feel like we’ve spent a lifetime with him.  In a good way.  And while I singled out Giamatti, Rosamund Pike, Minnie Driver, Rachelle Lefevre, Dustin Hoffman and Scott Speedman are all fantastic. For more on the film, watch the trailer here.

Anyway, the other day I sat down with Giamatti and Pike and while I didn’t have much time, we talked about how they got involved in the project, the rehearsal process, did they read the book, and Pike gave me an update on The Godmother.  Hit the jump to watch what the interview:
