Coming off of his latest feature, The Five-Year Engagement, director Nicholas Stoller is lining up his next project. THR reports that Stoller is now in negotiations to helm the R-rated comedy Townies. Universal snatched the project up last summer and set Seth Rogen to star as a regular guy who lives near an alpha male fraternity house and has to contend with a raucous member of the fraternity (Zac Efron) who wreaks havoc on his life. The casting made the project interesting to begin with, and now the addition of Stoller—known for his strong infusion of heart and comedy—makes the project even more intriguing.
Five-Year Engagement wasn’t exactly a box office hit, but Universal must be happy with the pic as they’ve tapped the Forgetting Sarah Marshall director to helm Townies. The script was written by Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Stoller and/or Rogen take a pass. In addition to Five-Year Engagement, Stoller co-wrote last year’s The Muppets with Jason Segel and is currently scripting a sequel alongside Muppets director James Bobin.

A few new photos have popped up online for director Bradley Parker’s Chernobyl Diaries and Sarah Polley’s indie drama, Take This Waltz starring Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams. First up from writer/producer Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity) comes Chernobyl Diaries, the supernatural horror tale set on the site of the famous nuclear meltdown of 1986. Six tourists hire a travel guide to take them on an “extreme” sight-seeing tour of the abandoned area and find they are not alone and the inhabitants are none too friendly, which this trailer clearly shows. Chernobyl Diaries opens May 25th.
Take This Waltz features Rogen and Williams as a young married couple whose relationship is threatened when a handsome artist (Luke Kirby) enters the equation. Polley’s directorial debut, Away From Her, earned her an Oscar nod for best writing and adapted screenplay. The buzz around the indie has been quite positive; you can watch a sampling of it in this trailer. Hit the jump to see the new photos.

Hollywood A-listers throw the best apocalypse parties. Directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have managed to land cameos from Emma Watson, Jason Segel and David Krumholtz, all starring as themselves, in the 2013 disaster comedy, The End of the World. We already knew that James Franco would feature heavily in the film, since it seems that the celebs are crashing his apartment to ride out the apocalypse. The place is starting to get a lot more crowded than the original short film that featured Rogen and Jay Baruchel as the only survivors holed up during the End of Days. Watson is reportedly still in negotiations, but Segel and Krumholtz are set to join Jonah Hill, Danny McBride, Aziz Ansari, Craig Robinson and the others. Should be one hell of a party. Hit the jump for more, including a trailer for the short film. [Update: Variety reports that Michael Cera and Rihanna are also circling cameo roles.]

A new trailer for writer-director Sarah Polley’s romantic drama Take This Waltz has gone online. Michelle Williams stars as a woman who’s married to a good-natured cookbook author (Seth Rogen) but then she finds herself attracted to a handsome artist (Luke Kirby). The movie actually looks really, really good, with Williams, Rogen and Kirby promising some strong performances. I was fearful that the film would come off as too “indie”-feeling for its own good, but Polley seems to have captured the perfect tone for her second feature as a director. Though the trailer has many moments of levity, the troubled conscience of Williams and issues of morality appear to play a big part in the film. Polley’s directorial debut, Away from Her, earned the actress/writer/director an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Sarah Silverman. Take This Waltz opens in limited release on June 29th.

Paramount has won a bidding war for a pitch that will pit Seth Rogen and Kevin Hart as partners in a police comedy. The pitch comes from Rodney Rothman, who previously served as head writer for The Late Show with David Letterman and wrote a couple of episodes of the short-lived Judd Apatow TV series Undeclared. Variety’s report is scarce on plot details, but adds that Rothman will write and produce the pic, with Rogen and Evan Goldberg serving as producers and Hart onboard as an executive producer. Rothman produced the upcoming Apatow production The Five-Year Engagement starring Jason Segel, and is poised to make his directorial debut on the horror-comedy The Something.
Hart’s a comedian whom you may recognize from his memorable role as an angry customer in The 40-Year Old Virgin. He recently starred in Death at a Funeral, and appears in The Five-Year Engagement and the upcoming Think Like a Man. I think a Rogen/Hart pairing has great potential, and I’m interested to see what the premise involves. Rogen is next set to make his own directorial debut on The Apocalypse with Jonah Hill, James Franco, Jay Baruchel and Danny McBride.

At today’s press day for the hockey comedy Goon, currently available in VOD and arriving in theaters on March 30th, Collider was able to talk to the film’s producer/co-writer/actor Jay Baruchel after the roundtables and get quick updates on Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse, and the How to Train Your Dragon sequel and Cartoon Network animated series. For his responses about each, check out what he had to say after the jump.

Funnyman actor Seth Rogen is taking on hosting duties for the 2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards, being held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica on February 25th. To promote the gig, he spoke to members of the press about why he thought it seemed like a fun thing to do.
During the interview, Seth Rogen talked about being as nervous about flubbing or tipping while hosting as he is in any element of his life, that he’s been watching all of the nominated movies in preparation, the hosting advice he’s gotten from Judd Apatow, what films he responded to in 2011 (Take Shelter and Drive) and what he’s looking forward to this year (The Dark Knight Rises), the TV shows he enjoys watching (Breaking Bad, 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation), and that Pineapple Express is his favorite film that he’s done. He also talked about how his directorial debut, The Apocalypse, is coming along, that he’d like to do a Kung Fu Panda 3, that he doesn’t know if there will ever be a Pineapple Express 2, and that he doesn’t think there’s any chance of there ever being a Freaks and Geeks movie. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

How do you deal cinematically with cancer? That’s the question of Jonathan Levine’s 50/50, which was based on the experiences of its writer Will Reiser. It’s a tough subject matter because cancer touches so many lives and rarely offers happy endings. But 50/50 manages to be charming, and more about friendship and family in crisis than just pain. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars with Seth Rogen, Bryce Dallas Howard and Anna Kendrick in this warm dramedy. Our review of 50/50 on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Hoping to hop on the apocalyptic bandwagon that will surely never get annoying in 2012, Sony Pictures has entered into negotiations to finance and distribute The Apocalypse, an end of days comedy marking the directorial debut of Seth Rogen. Written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg from a story by Jason Stone, the pic was inspired by a short film called Jay and Seth vs The Apocalypse. In it, Rogen and Jay Baruchel play their real life selves while they ride out the end of the world in their apartment. Since two movie stars cooped up during Armageddon clearly isn’t enough, the project has expanded to include James Franco, Jonah Hill, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson now residing in Franco’s (presumably larger?) Los Angeles apartment. We previously reported that the pic would start shooting in February, but it looks as if that will be pushed back until spring. Hit the jump for more on The Apocalypse.

Let’s face it: the holidays are here and most people’s brains are already on vacation. Since it’s just too hard to come up with an original movie idea right now, a lot of talk has turned to potential sequels. Some franchises, like Gremlins and Mission: Impossible already have more than one movie in the books while others, such as Colombiana and Pineapple Express are open to sequels just because they can be. So we’ve ransacked the internets to find some updates on sequels you’ve been dying to see and others you never dreamed of being produced. Hit the jump to check them out.

Fresh off a supporting role in this year’s stellar 50/50, Seth Rogen is looking to expand his talents behind-the-scenes. While it’s well known that Rogen co-wrote Superbad, Pineapple Express, and The Green Hornet, the actor has also been credited as an executive producer on a number of Judd Apatow’s projects. He was a producer on 50/50, and now Variety reports that Rogen is coming on as a producer of an upcoming Disney property. The project is a spy comedy called The B Team that centers on a top secret agent’s tech support team and researchers who are tasked with rescuing him after he’s kidnapped. Rogen will produce with an eye towards starring, though it’s not specified what role he would take on.
Disney bought the pitch from Derek Guiley and David Schneiderman (Chasing Liberty), but with Rogen’s penchant for writing I wouldn’t be surprised if he made a pass on the script. Rogen will next be seen in My Mother’s Curse opposite Barbara Streisand, and is gearing up to make his directorial debut with Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse.

It’s a sad truth that you can’t see everything you want at a major film festival and I was bummed that I missed Sarah Polley’s Take This Waltz when I was at TIFF. However, I rested easy in the knowledge that movie starring Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen would probably find distribution and now it has. Magnolia has sent out a press release announcing their acquisition of the relationship drama and plan to run it through the festival circuit before releasing it into theaters in early summer 2012.
For those unfamiliar with the film, Williams plays a woman who’s married to a good-natured cookbook author (Rogen) but then she finds herself attracted to a handsome artist (Luke Kirby). I really enjoyed Polley’s previous flim, Away from Her, and I’m glad I’ll be seeing Take This Waltz in the not-too-distant future. Hit the jump for the full press release.

With the fall film season now in full swing, I’m 100% ashamed to admit that I’ve yet to see two of my most anticipated fall films: Moneyball and 50/50. Now, I have every intention of ending this charade at some point this weekend but, for now, I hope you’ll give me a pass. If I’ve still yet to check them out when we meet here next week, I’ll understand if you choose to revoke my “mildly credible film blogger” credentials. In the meantime…
