CinemaCon begins on Monday in Las Vegas, but Steve is already in Sin City snapping photos of some cool promo posters, standees, and banners.  For those unaware, CinemaCon is a convention put on for all the major theater owners in order to get a look at what the studios have to offer for the rest of the year; it’s basically Comic-Con for theater owners.  Steve came across the first poster for Martin McDonagh’s (In Bruges) dark comedy Seven Psychopaths and the second poster for Bradley Cooper-fronted drama The Words.  Here’s the first poster if you missed it.  The promo poster for the latter rightly highlights the outstanding ensemble cast.

Hit the jump to check out the posters, and be sure to check back over the next few days for all our coverage from CinemaCon 2012 The Words is set for release on September 21st and  Seven Psychopaths opens on November 2nd.

UPDATE: We’ve come across a Seven Psychopaths promo banner.  It’s been added after the jump.

Woody Harrelson Talks RAMPART, SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS, HUNGER GAMES, and Whether or Not He Can Still Dunk a Basketball

Woody-Harrelson-Rampart-Seven-Psychopaths-interview-slice

Opening tomorrow, in limited release, is director Oren Moverman‘s (The Messenger) fantastic new movie, Rampart.  Led by a brillaint Woody Harrelson, Rampart is about a corrupt cop whose past is finally catching up with him in the wake of a department-wide corruption scandal.  The film also stars Sigourney Weaver, Robin Wright, Steve Buscemi, Cynthia Nixon, Ben Foster, Anne Heche, Ice Cube, and Ned Beatty.

Recently, I got to speak with Harrelson. We talked about how he got involved in the project, what is was like to try and stick to the script while also finding the truth in the moment, what did he think of the film when he first saw it, filming on location in Los Angeles during the day, karaoke (he sings some Queen), and whether or not he can still dunk a basketball.  In addition, Harrelson talked about The Hunger Games and Martin McDonagh‘s Seven Psychopaths.  Hit the jump to watch.

First Images from Martin McDonagh’s SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS Starring Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, and Woody Harrelson

The first images from Seven Psychopaths, Martin McDonagh‘s highly-anticipated follow up to In Bruges, have gone online. The film stars Woody Harrelson as a gangster who goes on a rampage after his beloved shih tzu is kidnapped by an unemployed actor (Sam Rockwell) whose only source of income is helping a professional dognapper (Christopher Walken) who steals dogs and returns them for the reward money (That’s right: McDonagh has basically borrowed the M.O. of Jon Lovitz character from City Slickers 2).  Colin Farrell co-stars as Martin, a struggling screenwriter who tries to help Rockwell’s character, but only gets caught up in the mess, although it gives him great material for his next script, which is called “Seven Psychopaths”.

Hit the jump to check out the images and more info on the flick, which also stars Tom Waits, Gabourey Sidibe, Abbie Cornish, and Olga KurylenkoSeven Psychopaths is due out in theaters this fall.

Colin Farrell and William Monahan Talk LONDON BOULEVARD, Filmmaking, Favorite Actors and Directors and SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: November 9th, 2011 at 7:41 pm

A few weeks ago, I ran an extended interview with writer/director William Monahan for his directorial debut London Boulevard (now on VOD and in theaters this weekend in limited release).  Starring Colin Farrell, Keira Knightley, Anna Friel, Jamie Bower, David Thewlis, Ray Winstone, Stephen Graham, Eddie Marsan, and Ben Chaplin, the film is about a man just released from prison (Farrell) who falls in love with a reclusive young movie star (Knightley) and finds himself in a duel with a vicious gangster (Winstone).  During our wide ranging conversation, we covered everything from his thoughts on VOD and what changes were made to the film for its domestic release, the digital revolution, the crime genre, writing dialogue, and working with actors.  In addition, he gave me updates on The Departed sequel/prequel, Sin City 2, The Gambler, Tripoli, Becket, Mojave (which might be his next film), and revealed there is another version of Kingdom of Heaven that no one has seen.

However, the same day we did that interview, I did another one with Monahan, except the second conversation included Colin Farrell.  Rather than ask the same junket type questions, we spent a large portion of our time talking about what got them both into making movies, and their favorite actors and directors.  After being movie nerds, we then talked about their first meeting, the script, how they found Farrell’s character, filming in London, and rehearsals.  Additionally, Farrell talked a bit about Martin McDonagh‘s Seven Psychopaths and Total Recall.  Hit the jump for more.

Woody Harrelson, Tom Waits, and Olga Kurylenko Join Martin McDonagh’s SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 9th, 2011 at 2:02 pm

At this point, it’s going to be very tough for the cast of In Bruges director Martin McDonagh’s Seven Psychopaths to get any better. He’s already got Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, and Christopher Walken lined up, and now Woody Harrelson, Tom Waits, and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) have joined the line-up. Farrell stars as a screenwriter struggling with his latest script, titled Seven Psychopaths, who gets roped into a dog-napping job by his friends (Rockwell and Walken). Things take a turn when the beloved Shih Tzu of a psychopathic gangster goes missing, and the trio find themselves on the run.

Mickey Rourke was originally in talks to play the gangster, but recently turned the gig down (calling director McDonagh “a jerkoff” in the process). Harrelson will take on the role of the gangster, which pairied with the casting of Waits makes for a big step up from Rourke in my book. I loved the hell out of In Bruges and I’m anxiously looking forward to the writer-director’s follow up, especially given the fantastic cast he’s put together. Hit the jump to read the full synopsis for the film. [Update: We've been sent the full press release for the casting announcement, which is now included after the jump.]

First Synopsis for Martin McDonagh’s SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS Starring Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, and Christopher Walken

Steve just returned from AFM with a boatload of goodies to share with our readers, and among the finds is the first synopsis for In Bruges director Martin McDonagh’s action-comedy Seven Psychopaths. The film features a top-notch ensemble made up of Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, and Mickey Rourke. 2008’s In Bruges was an ingenious and brutally funny black comedy, so I’m psyched (pun-intended) to see McDonagh assemble such a fantastic/volatile cast for his follow-up feature. The wacky premise of Seven Psychopaths involves a dog-napping gone wrong, and oh so much more. Hit the jump for the full synopsis.

Mickey Rourke Takes SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS Over THE EXPENDABLES 2

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: October 18th, 2011 at 3:12 pm

While earlier this year, Mickey Rourke was reported as being one of four principal cast members in Martin McDonagh’s Seven Psychopaths, we assumed that the Oscar-nominated star would reprise his role as Tool, the tattooing, knife-wielding badass, in the sequel to The Expendables. Now it looks as if the two projects are mutually exclusive, as Rourke has sided with the In Bruges director and co-star Colin Farrell at the expense of the Simon West-directed sequel. Even though he did the original The Expendables as a favor to Sylvester Stallone, it appears that Rourke is seeking a return to award nominations, as McDonagh has won one Oscar (Six Shooter) and was nominated for In Bruges. Hit the jump for more on Rourke and Seven Psychopaths.

CBS Films Looks to Co-Finance and Distribute SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS Starring Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, and Christopher Walken; First Synopsis Released

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: September 30th, 2011 at 8:19 pm

The next feature from In Bruges writer/director Martin McDonagh looks like it may have found financing. CBS Films is in negotiations to co-finance and distribute the action comedy Seven Psychopaths, which will be the writer/director’s first feature since his 2008 debut. The film reunites McDonagh with In Bruges star Colin Farrell who is set to play a struggling screenwriter looking for inspiration. He gets roped into a dog kidnapping scheme by his friends, but the three get more than they bargained for when they kidnap a psychopathic gangster’s beloved Shih Tzu. Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken are signed on to star as Farrell’s oddball friends.

We previously reported that Mickey Rourke had joined the cast (presumably as the eccentric gangster), but the press release from CBS Films doesn’t mention the actor. In Bruges is a black comedy gem, so it’s fantastic news to hear that McDonagh’s follow-up (with a terrific cast in tow) is well on its way. Production on Seven Psychopaths is set to begin this fall in L.A. Hit the jump to read the full synopsis for the flick.

Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, and Christopher Walken Join Colin Farrell in SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS

by Brendan Bettinger    Posted: May 11th, 2011 at 9:45 pm

Quick — before you read the headline, think of four male actors you’d like to see in a movie together.  Now, less than 2% of you named Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, and Christopher Walken.  But 14% combined two or more of these actors, and an impressive 37% of your lists included at least one.  This bodes well for Seven Psychopaths, the black comedy which secured Farrell, Rockwell, Rourke, and Walken at the Cannes Film Festival today.  Per Variety, the story centers on “a screenwriter (Farrell) struggling for inspiration for his script, Seven Psychopaths, who gets drawn into the dog kidnapping schemes of his oddball friends (Rockwell and Walken).”  How can you not love a movie that casts Rockwell and Walken as “oddball friends”/dog kidnappers separated by 26 years in age?  Rourke will play a gangster who causes trouble when his dog goes missing.  (Given Rourke’s love of dogs and general flirtation with insanity, he may not know he is in Seven Psychopaths.)

The project reunites Farrell and In Bruges writer/director Martin McDonagh, not to mention In Bruges producers Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, and Tessa Ross.  The ineffable Meghan Ellison (True Grit) is also on board as producer.
