We all know that this hasn’t been the best year for movies at the domestic box office. Only a handful of weekends have come out ahead of 2010 in terms of profit. Luckily, this Memorial Day Weekend was one of them. Traditionally one of the most profitable of Hollywood’s entire year, this year’s holiday more than measured up. First, The Hangover Part II crushed the All-Time opening for a comedy. Then estimates put the combined profits of the domestic box office at nearly 50% above last year’s four-day holiday frame and 10% above 2007’s profits (the year which held the all-time record). Here’s how the top ten looks, including revised estimates for the three-day weekend:
| Title | Weekend | Holiday | Total | |
| 1 | The Hangover Part II | $86 | $105.7 | $133.3 |
| 2 | Kung Fu Panda 2 | $47.8 | $62.2 | $68 |
| 3 | Pirates of the Caribbean 4 | $39.5 | $50.3 | $163.9 |
| 4 | Bridesmaids | $16.5 | $20.9 | $89.5 |
| 5 | Thor | $9.4 | $12 | $162.3 |
| 6 | Fast Five | $6.4 | $8.1 | $197.5 |
| 7 | Midnight in Paris | $1.93 | $2.6 | $3.5 |
| 8 | Rio | $1.8 | $2.4 | $135.4 |
| 9 | Jumping the Broom | $1.8 | $2.35 | $35.6 |
| 10 | Something Borrowed | $1.8 | $2.3 | $35.2 |

The 2011 Razzie Awards were announced last night, and voters mostly just want you to know how much they hated The Last Airbender and Sex and the City 2. The Last Airbender took home Worst Picture, Worst 3D, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, and helped earn Jackson Rathbone Worst Supporting Actor along with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Meanwhile, the ladies of Sex and the City won both Worst Actress and Worst Screen Ensemble; the film itself was deemed Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel. Hit the jump for the full list of winners.

With a 16% Rottentomatoes.com rating and a final box office take of $95 million against a $100 million budget, it’s fair to call Sex and the City 2 a critical and commercial failure. At the time of its release, however, you would have thought the film’s creators had perpetrated some violent crime against humanity. Critics spewed vitriol and, worse, avowed fans blasted the movie. The most common complaint was that the film strayed too far from the series’ original premise – four single ladies looking for love in New York – with its far flung, Middle Eastern setting. Now that the dust, or Abu Dhabian sand, has settled, I proffer my own take on how, with this sequel, Sex finally lost its appeal. My review after the jump:

Over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, two worthy opponents challenged reigning box office champion Shrek Forever After, but neither Sex and the City 2 nor Prince of Persia: Sands of Time were able to conquer America’s favorite ogre. The Shrek franchise is not as dominant as it once was, but the brand is still strong enough to ensure two straight weekends on top with a strong hold from last weekend’s opening. The girls of Sex and the City were runners up on Sunday, but Prince moved in to second place by the end of Monday. In fact, with less than a $1 million difference between the four-day totals, the order of the top five may not be finalized until tomorrow. Details after the jump.
| Title | Weekend | Total | |
| 1 | Shrek 4 | $55,725,000 | $145,5 |
| 2 | Prince of Persia | $37,800,000 | $37.8 |
| 3 | Sex and the City 2 | $37,145,000 | $51.4 |
| 4 | Iron Man 2 | $20,600,000 | $279.2 |
| 5 | Robin Hood | $13,600,000 | $86.3 |
| 6 | Letters to Juliet | $7,250,000 | $38.0 |
| 7 | Just Wright | $2,700,000 | $18.7 |
| 8 | Date Night | $2,250,000 | $94.0 |
| 9 | MacGruber | $1,900,000 | $7.6 |
| 10 | How to Train Your Dragon | $1,465,000 | $213.0 |

Memorial Day weekend started early for Sex & the City 2. The sequel launched on 3,445 screens Thursday, bringing in $14.2 million including $3 million from midnight shows. Friday added another $13.1 million, giving Sex a running domestic estimate of $27.3 million and a projected five-day holiday take somewhere north of $65 million – just a bit over what the first Sex & the City made in 2008…over three days…on a non-holiday weekend. Counter-programming for the menopausal City gals came in the form of a beefed-up Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia the Sands of Time. The RPG turned big-screen adventure flick fell a bit flat in its debut, opening in third place with an estimated $10.2 million from 3,646 screens. The four-day projection for Persia looks like a solid $45 million so, Pirates of the Caribbean it ain’t.
| Title | Friday | Total | |
| 1 | Sex & the City 2 | $13,100,000 | $27.3 |
| 2 | Shrek 4 | $11.300.000 | $101 |
| 3 | Prince of Persia | $10,200,000 | $10.2 |
| 4 | Iron Man 2 | $4,200,000 | $262.7 |
| 5 | Robin Hood | $2,800,000 | $75.5 |

Expectations were high for the Sex and the City sequel we all knew was inevitable after the first movie’s opening weekend. With hundreds of women lined up hours in advance, decked out in heels and sipping Cosmos, how could Warner Brothers not cash in on the sequel?
And cash in they did producing a full-length feature film, complete with glittery gowns, muscular men and the quartet of friends taking a decadent vacation overseas. Collider caught up with the cast, appropriately enough, in the shoe department of Bergdorf-Goodman to dish on the details of the fun, the friends, and, of course, the fashion. To hear what Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall, Chris Noth and writer-director Michael Patrick King had to say, continue reading after the jump:

While everyone knows the sequel to Sex and the City is getting released May 27, Warner Bros. has kept the plot under wraps and fans of the show are getting restless. Thankfully, just a few days ago I got to speak with writer/director Michael Patrick King at ShoWest as a reporter for our partners at Omelete and he spilled a lot of the secrets to Sex and the City 2. So if you want to know what happens to Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon, you’re in the right place. Here’s some of the highlights:
Trust me, there is so much more in the interview. For the full transcript and the audio of the interview, hit the jump. If you’re a fan of Sex and the City, I promise you’ll love it.

While most of the major studios didn’t do a full Showest presentation, Warner Bros. showed up and punched everyone else in the face with a cup of awesome. Not only did they bring a ton of stars and filmmakers, they premiered footage from Christopher Nolan’s Inception, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Due Date, Clash of the Titans in 3D, Sex and the City 2, Life as We Know it, and Alan Horn also announced we’d be getting another Final Destination movie.
Quite simply…they knocked it out of the park and showed everyone else how it’s done. This might explain why they’re the biggest studio in Hollywood and they’re making the best movies.
But while I could go on and on about 2009 and their huge hits like The Hangover, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, The Blind Side or Sherlock Holmes, let’s get to what happened today. For that…hit the jump.

Of all the women in my life who watched the Sex and the City TV show, only one enjoyed the 2008 movie while everyone else had mixed to negative reactions to the film. I watched the film and while I know it wasn’t for me, I couldn’t help but feel like the film was overly long and felt suited towards a made-for-HBO movie than a big screen theatrical event. But my opinion and the opinions of my mom and female friends don’t seem to matter much because Sex and the City 2 is hurdling towards us and the first trailer for the film has come online.
I don’t have much to say about it other than there’s two lame puns on the name “Carrie” and Kim Cattrall is almost unrecognizable and I don’t mean that in a good way. Also, a female friend who liked the show but hated the first movie made an interesting point about the sequel: now that Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is married, what’s the point? How would her character even have a job since her column was about single life in Manhattan? I don’t know the answer to that question nor do I particularly care. Sex and the City 2 isn’t for me.
But if you think it may be for you, check out the trailer after the jump. Sex and the City 2 hits theaters on May 28, 2010.

If you have a movie coming out next year, you were apparently supposed to release a poster today. Already we’ve had new posters for Iron Man 2 and Clash of the Titans and now we have new posters for The Book of Eli as well as the first poster for Sex and the City 2. Which one of these is not like the other…
A set of three characters posters for The Book of Eli come courtesy of IGN and feature what you can do with words that feature “eli” in the middle. I’m planning on creating my own set of posters for the film with the words “Helicopter”, “Pelican”, and “Feline”. As for Sex in the City 2 (courtesy of Moviefone), I like how it’s a double-entendre and a double-advertisement. Not only do they use “Carrie” like “Carry” (because the main character’s name is Carrie!), but Carrie is carrying (so clever) a Chanel handbag. I’m not sure what Sex in the City 2 is about, but it apparently involves Sarah Jessica Parker piloting a propeller plane or working as highway patrolwoman.
Hit the jump to check out all the posters. The Book of Eli opens on January 15, 2010, and Sex and the City 2 opens on May 28, 2010.

The first official images from Sex and the City 2 have hit the net thanks to our partners at Omelete. While they look exactly like every image from the first movie, or any episode of the show, I’ll trust they’re from the new one. Also, alongside the new images, Omelete scored a synopsis that can only be described as worthless. Read this:
Romantic Comedy. Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda take another bite out of the Big Apple in the sequel to the 2008 summer blockbuster.
I get it, Warner Bros. doesn’t want to spoil any of the twists, but this is pretty bare bones. Hit the jump if you want to see more of Sarah Jessica Parker and Mr. Big (Chris Noth) getting out of a car and some solo shots.
