Guy Ritchie may be re-teaming with Sherlock Holmes producer Joel Silver for Silver’s long-in-development adaptation of the DC Comics series Sgt. Rock.  A few years back, Ritchie was attached to the project, but he left and Water for Elephants helmer Francis Lawrence came on board.  When we last heard about the project in February 2010, Chad St. John had provided the script which had Rock moving from his original World War II setting to the distant future.  Since then, word on Sgt. Rock has been quiet and it looks like Lawrence is no longer directing.  Twitch now reports that Ritchie is back on board and that Warner Bros. and Silver are hoping Sgt. Rock will be Ritchie’s follow-up to Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.  Ritchie is reportedly overseeing the latest draft of the screenplay which restores the original setting and pits Sgt. Frank Rock and his infantry unit Easy Company against Nazis.

SGT. ROCK Flees World War II and Prepares for a Future War

Producer Joel Silver’s adaptation of the comic series Sgt. Rock, which began its run in 1959, will not be landing at Normandy or the beaches of Okinawa.  Hero Complex reports that the movie version about the leader of Easy Company will not take place during the comic’s setting of World War II, but in the “not-too-distant” future.   Putting Rock into this future war has returned life to the long-gestating project, but I find the idea depressing.  It’s naïve to think that there won’t be any wars in the future, but jumping onto a war that hasn’t happened yet feels cheap and disrespectful towards soldiers who have to fight in wars that are happening now.  Not all movies can be The Hurt Locker, but of the two wars we’re fighting, neither was deemed dramatic enough for this comic book adaptation?  I guess it depends on how far in the future Rock is going but it would feel less grotesque if it took place, for example, in 2120 as opposed to 2020.  The 2120 date would also gel with my personal motto: “Everything is better with lasers and jetpacks.”

With a script by Chad St. John and with director Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) involved with the development, Silver says he’s feeling pretty good about the project but it isn’t a a “go” picture just yet.

With Warner Bros. Ninja Assassin set for release next week, the studio held a press day this afternoon here in Los Angeles.  While I’ll have plenty of video interviews for you to watch over the next few days, the first one I’d like to share is with producer Joel Silver.  Also, since Silver is producing tons of other projects like Sherlock Holmes, The Losers, Sgt. Rock, Lobo, Unknown White Male, and The Book of Eli, I figure his interview is the first one I should post.

While I didn’t get any major scoops, I did find out what’s up with Lobo and what does he think of Jeffrey Dean Morgan for the role.  Also, we talked about how Francis Lawrence landed the directing job on Sgt. Rock and does he think it might get made next year.  Of course many other subjects were talked about so watch the interview after the jump:

It’s taken nearly twenty years for Producer Joel Silver to bring DC Comics’ Sgt. Rock to the big screen.  The film has passed through numerous writers and directors and even in today’s comic-book-hero drenched cinema landscape, but it’s hard out there for a guy who just wants to serve his country even though he has no superpowers.  Now it looks like I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence is going take a shot at enlisting the character.  Hit the jump for details.

Anytime you sit down with producer Joel Silver you’re going to learn about a lot of upcoming films. That’s because as the producer of over 90 movies, the guys is always making them and he has his hand in many projects fandom cares about. So when I got the chance to speak with him at yesterday’s “Orphan” junket, towards the end of the interview I asked about many of his upcoming projects.

After the jump you can either read or watch Joel talk about what’s up with Shane Black, The Wachowski Brothers, “Sgt. Rock”, “The Dirty Dozen” and “Greyskull”.
