Drew Barrymore has signed on to direct/produce the young adult thriller Heist Society for Warner Bros. Based on the novel by Ally Carter, Heist Society tells the story of Katarina Bishop, a young woman who embraces her family’s history of cat burglary and general thievery so as to clear her father’s name in a case regarding a mobster’s missing art collection. Barrymore will re-team with Whip It scribe Shauna Cross who will pen the adaptation under Barrymore’s supervision.
In addition to Heist Society, Barrymore is also attached to direct the adaptation of Liz Tuccillo’s novel How To Be Single for New Line. It is believed that the director will take on Heist Society after wrapping How To Be Single. For more on the former, check out a synopsis of Carter’s novel after the jump.

Filed under “They’ll Make Anything into a Movie” is Phoenix Pictures’ adaptation of the famous guide for pregnant women, What to Expect When You’re Expecting. The project now has a director as Deadline reports that Nanny McPhee helmer Kirk Jones has come on board. Heather Hach (2003′s Freaky Friday) wrote the first draft for the romantic comedy and Whip It! screenwriter Shauna Cross did a rewrite. The story will be done in the vein of Love, Actually and follow five expectant couples. Hopefully Jones can deliver a movie that sounds better than “It’s like Nine Months times five!”

I suppose we weren’t cautious enough, because the success of the adaptation of He’s Just Not That Into You sparked a new genre: the self-help romantic comedy. Lionsgate has acquired the rights to Heidi Murkoff’s bestselling instructional tome What to Expect When You’re Expecting. The book is now on its fourth edition of informing mothers-to-be on all things pregnancy, be they practical, physical, emotional, nutritional, or sexual: 16 million copies sold.
According to Deadline, the studio has hired Shauna Cross (Whip It!) to rewrite Heather Hach’s first pass. The film will track five expectant couples “in the vein of Love Actually.” As with Into You, spiritual cousin Valentine’s Day, and eventual holiday sequel New Year’s Eve, you can probably expect a few big names to sign on to the project for a reduced paycheck in exchange for a limited shooting window. Hit the jump for a description of What to Expect.

Dakota Fanning is in negotiations so star in Summit’s adaptation of the Gayle Forman young adult novel If I Stay. Fanning would play Mia, an accomplished 17-year-old cellist destined for Julliard before a car accident sends her into a coma. The book is told from the out-of-body thoughts and recollections of Mia.
Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) was at one point attached to direct, but she left the project to helm Red Riding Hood instead. Variety reports that Brazilian director Heitor Dhalia (Adrift) will assume the reigns; Shauna Cross (Whip It) scripted the adaptation. Click here for our interview with Cross where she discusses her take on the material, and hit the jump for a synopsis of the book.

In the sport of Roller Derby, sometimes you need to “throw a hit”, which is exactly what it sounds like. In her directorial debut, Drew Barrymore fails to throw a hit but “Whip It” scrapes out a victory on the strength of its characters, its script, and its lovely and talented lead, Ellen Page.

Earlier today, I was at the Los Angeles press day for “Whip It” and I was able to participate in a roundtable interview with Shauna Cross. She wrote the film’s screenplay based on her book “Derby Girl”, which recounts her real-life skating exploits with the Los Angeles Derby Dolls. She’s currently attached to write “If I Stay” for director Catherine Hardwicke, and I was able to find out what the project is about and where it is in Catherine’s very busy schedule. Cross says, “it’s about a young woman who gets in a terrible car accident with her family and it follows the 24 hours of her outside of her body in a coma.” She also told us, “we’re just about to go to cast.” Much more on the project after the jump:
