And the bad news for new releases just keeps coming. Despite placing first on Friday, the Universal comedy Tower Heist could not pull off a weekend win. The all-star ensemble took in just $25.1 million from 3,367 locations or ten million less than it was expected to command. The culprit? Looks like audiences who kept Puss In Boots at the low end of its own projections last weekend came out in force for round two: giving the Dreamworks Animation release an impressive 97% hold and a second week at number one.

Title Weekend Total
1 Puss In Boots $33,000,000 $75.5
2 Tower Heist $25,100,000 $25.1
3 Harold and Kumar 3D $13,100,000 $13.1
4 Paranormal Activity 3 $8,525,000 $95.3
5 In Time $7,700,000 $24.2
6 Footloose $4,550,000 $48.8
7 Real Steel $3,407,000 $78.7
8 The Rum Diary $2,987,000 $10.4
9 Ides of March $2,000,000 $36.8
10 Moneyball $1,900,000 $70.3

After seeing the movie modifier ‘3D’ lose almost all of its cache over the past year or so, who knew that an animated re-issue with that three dimensional makeover could roar this loud at the box office?  Doubling even the most sanguine early projections, Disney’s The Lion King 3D took in an estimated $29.3 million this weekend from its 2,330 (mostly 3D) locations to become this weekend’s undisputed box office ruler.

Title Weekend Total
1 The Lion King 3D $29,300,000 $29.3
2 Contagion $14,500,000 $44.2
3 Drive $11,000,000 $11
4 The Help $6,400,000 $147.3
5 Straw Dogs $5,000,000 $5
6 I Don’t Know How She Does It $4,500,000 $4.5
7 The Debt $2,945,000 $26.5
8 Warrior $2,770,000 $9.9
9 Rise of the Planet of the Apes $2,625,000 $171.6
10 Colombiana $2,300,000 $33.3

SHREK: THE WHOLE STORY Blu-Ray Review

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 2nd, 2011 at 10:20 am

When DreamWorks SKG was formed, former Disney Animation guru Jeffery Katzenberg was intent on making animated films at his newly created movie studio. By 2000, the studio already had two animated films under their belt (Antz and The Prince of Egypt) and their focus was on 2D animation. While Katzenberg was determined to re-capture the 2D animation magic he enjoyed while at Disney, a handful of animators were working on the “ugly duckling” film of the studio: a weird little picture called Shrek. Fast-forward to the critical and financial disaster that was The Road to El Dorado in the midst of Pixar’s wild success with 3D animated films, and everyone’s attention focused on the only 3D film the studio had in the pipeline, Shrek.

What began as a laborious project, on which animators were sent to work as punishment, suddenly became the studio’s saving grace.  Witty, edgy, and ballsy as hell, Shrek was the anti-Disney film; a giant middle finger from Jeffery Katzenberg to those at Disney that had ousted him so suddenly. An instant smash-hit, the film spawned the studio’s first franchise and a merchandising cash-cow. Now, Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek the Third and Shrek Forever After are available together on Blu-ray for the first time. My review of the Shrek: The Whole Story box set after the jump.

Shrek. So thoroughly has the character permeated pop culture and zeitgeist – that no context or explanation is needed with the word. It has an almost pavlovian response on the listener. I say Shrek and images of a green ogre, pop culture references, sight gags, Eddie Murphy and a soon-to-be-eaten ginger bread man pop to mind. This can perhaps be attributed to the character’s ubiquitous nature – from the films to lunch boxes to Halloween costumes to ABC specials to commercial tie ins to action figures, Shrek quite simply is everywhere. DreamWorks will further propel its plan for Shrek domination by releasing all four films in a box set for the very first time December 7th, just in time for the Christmas season. In anticipation of the release of the new digitally remastered Blu-ray, an informal Q&A and discussion was held with the some of the principle visual and audio technicians on the upcoming Shrek box set at DreamWorks headquarters in Los Angeles.  Hit the jump for more:

Weekend Box Office – $71.2 Million for SHREK FOREVER AFTER; Disaster for MACGRUBER

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: May 23rd, 2010 at 9:53 am

Shrek Forever After movie poster 3D slice

In its debut weekend Shrek Forever After (or “Shrek the Final Chapter” depending on who you ask) pulled in an estimated $71.2 million. That is the best opening for an animated feature this year and the third best for 2010 overall. Unfortunately, when compared to the last two entries in the franchise, Shrek’s Final Chapter isn’t much of a read.

Title Weekend Total
1 Shrek 4 $71,250,000 $71.2
2 Iron Man 2 $26,600,000 $251.2
3 Robin Hood $18,700,000 $66.1
4 Letters to Juliet $9,100,000 $27.4
5 Just Wright $4,225,000 $14.6
6 MacGruber $4,100,000 $4.1
7 Date Night $2,825,000 $90.6
8 Nightmare on Elm Street $2,285,000 $59.9
9 How to Train Your Dragon $1,850,000 $210.9
10 Kites $1,035,000 $1

Friday Box Office – SHREK FOREVER AFTER Debuts with $20.7 Million; MACGRUBER Implodes

by Nicole Pedersen    Posted: May 22nd, 2010 at 9:39 am

The fourth, and presumably final, installment in Dreamworks Animation’s crazy-profitable Shrek franchise muscled its way into 4,359 theatres on Friday – the widest release ever for an animated feature. That total includes approximately 2,373 3D sites but, so far, Shrek 4 doesn’t seem to be benefitting much from the added dimension… or its weightier ticket price. On its first day out, Shrek Forever After earned an estimated $20.7 million. That means that the weekend gross for the ogre and his ilk is likely to be far below that of 2007’s Shrek the Third. Meanwhile, Iron Man 2 took a 57% hit over last Friday’s figure – about equal to the percentage decline Robin Hood faced entering its second weekend. Which brings us to MacGruber. In its big screen debut the SNL skit turned… longer, debuted with a disheartening $1.6 million. Where is Betty White when you need her? Full details and the weekend numbers when you check back tomorrow.

Title Friday Total
1 Shrek 4 $20,700,000 $20.7
2 Iron Man 2 $7,500,000 $232.1
3 Robin Hood $5,600,000 $53.4
4 Letters to juliet $3,000,000 $21.3
5 MacGruber $1,600,000 $1.6

Antonio Banderas Video Interview SHREK FOREVER AFTER; Plus Info on the PUSS IN BOOTS Movie

With Shrek Forever After opening this weekend, DreamWorks Animation recently held a press day and I was able to attend a press conference with the entire cast.  While I’ll be posting the write-up in the next day or so, our partners at Omelete landed a TV spot with Antonio Banderas, and they sent me to interview him.  So a big thank you to them for making this interview happen.

During the interview we of course talked about Shrek Forever After, but Banderas also told me a lot about the upcoming Puss In Boots solo movie.  He said the film is inspired by Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah movies from the 60′s and it has split screens and zooms.  He went on to say it’s going to look like a Quentin Tarantino movie.  Hit the jump to check out the interview:

2 New Posters for SHREK FOREVER AFTER

DreamWorks has released two new posters for Shrek Forever After on Yahoo.  As I have said a few times, a hated the last two Shrek movies. Saying that, I’ve seen the first 30 minutes of the latest sequel and liked what I saw.  Does that mean the final film will be great…who knows.  But I thought How to Train Your Dragon was fantastic so maybe DreamWorks will be two for two.  Check out the posters after the jump:

New SHREK FOREVER AFTER Trailer

DreamWorks has released the first real trailer for Shrek Forever After and you can watch it after the jump.  While the last two Shrek movies might have soured you to caring about the 4th and final installment, I saw the first 30 minutes of Shrek Forever After two months ago and actually really liked the footage.  And this is coming from someone that hated the last two films.

The basic premise of the 4th film is Shrek is tired of his life and family and he makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin to get a day to himself, away from everyone and everything.  But what Shrek doesn’t know is Rumpelstiltskin is out for himself and his magic contracts are not as clear as he lets on.  So while Shrek expected to go back home after a short one day vacation, he awakens in a universe where no one knows him and he’s no longer married to Fiona.  Needless to say, the rest of the film is about returning everything to normal….

SHREK FOREVER AFTER to Open This Year’s Tribeca Film Festival

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 1st, 2010 at 12:03 am

slice_shrek_forever_after_movie_poster_01.jpg

This year’s Tribeca Film Festival will open with the closing chapter (or so DreamWorks says) of the Shrek “saga”, Shrek Forever After.  Previous big-name debuts at Tribeca include Spider-Man 3, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.

I’m trying not to be too down on Shrek Forever After especially since Steve, who shares my loathing of Shrek The Third, said he enjoyed what he saw of the new film.  The “final chapter” (again, I have trouble DreamWorks will let this money-machine rest in peace) has Shrek being tricked into an “It’s-a-Wonderful-Life” bargain by Rumplestiltskin.  Shrek must fight to return to his reality and escape from the alternate Far, Far Away where he never met Fiona, Donkey, or Puss in Boots, and Rumplestiltskin is king.

Hit the jump to read the full press release.  The Tribeca Film Festival runs from April 21st – May 2nd.  The Tribeca Film Festival will announce its 2010 feature film slate on March 10 and 15.  Shrek Forever After will hit theatres nationwide in 3D on May 21st.

First Photo and Synopsis for SHREK FOREVER AFTER

Above you can see the first image for the fourth (and supposedly final) Shrek film, Shrek Forever AfterUSA Today has the first in-depth synopsis of the movie and apparently the Scottish ogre is going It’s a Wonderful Life.  Apparently Shrek, after getting married and having kids, feels overly domesticated.  He strikes a deal with the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin (voiced by writer Walt Dohrn, not Paul McCartney as IMDb would have you believe), and ends up seeing what the world would be like without him in it.  “That translates into Donkey being forced into cart-pulling duty, fat and lazy Puss in Boots trading his sword for a pink bow and the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin ruling the kingdom.”  New voices for the film include Kathy Griffin and Kristin Schaal voicing a pair of ogre-hunting witches and a resistance group led by Jon Hamm as, says director Mike Mitchell (Sky High), the best-looking ogre you’ve ever seen.  Hit the jump to learn why I wouldn’t be sad if I lived in a world without the Shrek franchise in it.

Zach Galifianakis Could Sit on a Wall for the SHREK Spin-Off, PUSS IN BOOTS

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: November 4th, 2009 at 9:44 pm

slice_puss_in_boots_zach_galifianakis_01.jpg

I’m still in awe of how Zach Galifianakis, a terrific stand-up comedian who mostly unknown in the American mainstream, has become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood after his performance in “The Hangover”.  Even better, his performance in that film is true to his style of comedy.  I never felt that he was trying to be something he wasn’t.

I’m trying to keep this in mind as I read the news that he may be voicing the role of Humpty Dumpty in the upcoming “Shrek” spin-off, “Puss in Boots”.  Hit the jump for details.

Antonio Banderas talks SHREK FOREVER AFTER and PUSS IN BOOTS Movies

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: September 2nd, 2009 at 1:16 pm

About an hour ago I attended the press day for “The Other Man” and got to participate in a roundtable interview with Antonio Banderas and Laura Linney. Next week I’ll have a full transcript, but since Antonio talked a bit about the 4th “Shrek” movie “Shrek Forever After” and “Puss in Boots”, I wanted to get those quotes up now.

The quick info is “Shrek Forever After” is nearing completion as they’re watching a rough cut today at DreamWorks. Also, he says he’s probably going to start recording “Puss in Boots” in February. But the big info is Antonio revealed all the characters are going to go through some big physical changes in “Shrek Forever After”. Read exactly what he said after the jump:
