English-Language Trailer for RED LIGHTS Starring Cillian Murphy

An English-Language trailer for Rodrigo Cortes’ Red Lights has gone online.  For those unfamiliar with the flick, it stars Cillian Murphy and Sigourney Weaver as two physicists who debunk claims of paranormal activity, but they run up against a man (Robert De Niro) who may actually have special powers.  I dug almost all of the film when I saw it at Sundance, but the ending needs to be reworked since the execution undermines the power of what came before.  The new trailer sells the movie as a straight-up supernatural thriller, and while that’s technically true, the trailer also makes the film look generic and forgettable.  There’s more personality and fun in Red Lights than what’s on display here.

First Trailer for Action Thriller COLD LIGHT OF DAY Starring Henry Cavill and Bruce Willis

The first trailer for the action-thriller Cold Light of Day has gone online. The film centers on a man (Henry Cavill) whose family is abducted while vacationing in Spain. As he puts the pieces of their disappearance together, the man uncovers family secrets and a government conspiracy that are responsible for the crime. It looks like a neat little espionage actioner, but I’m not really seeing anything new or interesting being brought to the genre. That said, Cavill sure seems like he can handle himself. Bruce Willis stars as Cavill’s father in another one of his “seasoned law enforcement veteran” roles, while Sigourney Weaver is a nice addition as someone connected to Cavill’s family’s disappearance. Many will be interested in checking the film out if only to see our next Superman (Cavill dons the tights for Man of Steel) take his shot at a leading American role.

New Poster for THE RAVEN, Bonus Posters from Sundance 2012: THE IMPOSTER, RED LIGHTS

Although the release date for The Raven has been pushed back a month, that’s allowed Relativity to give us more looks at the property, like this new poster. It’s not quite as ink-soaked or blood-soaked as previous efforts and resembles more of a phoenix than a raven, but it’s stylish nonetheless. Here’s what you need to know about the posters we’ve rounded up today:

• Director James McTeigue’s The Raven stars John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe, who joins a detective (Luke Evans of Immortals) to stop a killer who’s committing crimes based on Poe’s works.
• The Imposter, a documentary film by director Bart Layton (Locked Up Abroad) that follows a young Frenchman who posed as a Texas family’s 16-year-old son who had been missing for three years
• From director Rodrigo Cortes (Buried) comes Red Lights, a paranormal thriller that questions the supernatural and whether a world-renowned psychic is actually gifted or just a charlatan. The film stars Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver and Elizabeth Olsen.

Sundance 2012: RED LIGHTS Review

Mysticism and superstition can provide hope.  If there’s something beyond our world, something we can’t see, then perhaps there’s a shortcut, a fount of secret knowledge, anything that can provide a solution when the real world doesn’t have one we like.  That’s where con artists come in and appeal to our desire for a great beyond.  These frauds carry themselves as the special people who will use their gift (and a curse! It’s always a blessing and a curse with these things) to heal the body and/or soul.   Rodrigo Cortés supernatural thriller Red Lights puts us on the side of skeptical scientists who aren’t opposed to the paranormal, but have yet to see any evidence of it.  Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and her assistant Dr. Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) use the power of science rather than the supernatural to debunk these phony mystics.  But in its second half, Red Lights makes a major narrative turn, shifts the tone, draws the viewer deeper into the possibility of the paranormal, and has its characters struggle to keep a hold on reality.  However, the film ends in a serious backfire where a clumsy execution breaks the spell.

With Rooney Mara (Youth in Revolt) set to star as rebellious hacker Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo next week, we thought we’d take a look back at past female badasses in cinematic history. Noomi Rapace nailed the role in the original Swedish version, so Mara will have a lot to live up to. First Trailer RAMPART Starring Woody Harrelson

I’ve been hearing about the cop drama Rampart for quite a while now, specifically Woody Harrelson’s performance in the film. The first trailer has now been released, and Harrelson does indeed look to be delivering one hell of a performance. The pic focuses on a Vietnam vet and cop who does his job a bit dirtier than most, unafraid to to blur the lines between right and wrong. Harrelson looks strong here, and I’m assuming the movie as a whole hinges on his character spinning out of control. Much has been said about the actor’s Oscar chances, so if he continues to pick up steam expect to hear a lot more about Rampart in the coming weeks.

New Synopsis and Promo Poster for STEP UP 4 3D and New Promo Poster for THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY Starring Bruce Willis and Henry Cavill

Straight from the American Film Market, we’ve got the new synopsis and promo poster for Step Up 4 3D, as well as a new promo poster for The Cold Light of Day. Step Up 4 is the fourth installment in the popular dance franchise, this time taking place in Miami and centering on flash mobs. The cast includes Ryan Guzman, Kathryn McCormick (So You Think You Can Dance), Misha Gabriel (This is It), and Peter Gallagher (American Beauty). Step Up 4 3D opens July 27th, 2012.

We’ve also got a new poster for Cold Light of Day. The thriller stars Henry Cavill (Man of Steel), Bruce Willis, and Sigourney Weaver. It centers on a young American who must race to find the connection between his father’s secrets and his family’s disappearance before time runs out. Exclusive: Sigourney Weaver Talks ABDUCTION, VAMPS and IT IS WHAT IT IS

The action thriller Abduction tells the story of Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner), a high school teenager who has the uneasy feeling that he’s living someone else’s life. His therapist, Dr. Geri Bennett (Sigourney Weaver), tries to talk him through his intense nightmares, but when he stumbles upon an image of himself as a little boy on a missing persons website, he realizes his parents (played by Jason Isaacs and Maria Bello) are not his own and that his entire life is a lie. Targeted by a team of trained killers, he is forced to go on the run with the only person he can trust, his neighbor Karen (Lily Collins), who he’s had a crush on for years.

At the film’s press day, actress Sigourney Weaver spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about the fun of playing roles originally written for men, what she enjoys about working with younger actors like co-stars Taylor Lautner and Lily Collins, and that she would be interested in exploring this character more, if there were to be a sequel. She also talked about how fun it is for her to see the ways kick-ass women have evolved in film, what made her want to jump into the vampire genre for Amy Heckerling’s upcoming comedy Vamps, and how her next role will be as a professor of queer theory in a film called It Is What It Is. GHOSTBUSTERS Returns to Theaters for 3 Nights This October

Sony Pictures is bringing Ghostbusters back to the big screen for a limited engagement this October.  The studio has announced that the classic comedy will play in approximately 500 theaters nationwide (plus select theaters in Canada and various international markets) for one showtime on October 13th, 20th, and 27th in 2K digital with 5.1 surround sound .  If someone asks you, “Are you going to see Ghostbusters on the big screen?” you say, “Yes!”  Details will be posted parkcirus.com and fans can follow Ghostbusters on Facebook and Twitter to be the first to know the details on the release.

I can only assume this is Sony’s way of gauging interest in a third Ghostbusters before finally giving the greenlight and shooting, as Dan Aykroyd recently claimed, in spring 2012.  It will be interesting to see how many people feel good from bustin’.  Hit the jump for the full press release.

Sigourney Weaver Talks AVATAR Sequels and GHOSTBUSTERS 3

At this weekend’s press day for Abduction, Collider was able to speak with Sigourney Weaver, who plays Dr. Geri Bennett in the film. Bennett is a 30-year CIA operative and therapist to Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner), a teenager who realizes that his entire life is a lie after a team of trained killers tracks him down, leaving him with no one to trust.

But, since that film doesn’t open until September 23^rd, we’ll hold what she had to say about it until closer to the release date. In the meantime, we did get a chance to have her update the status of the Avatar sequels, which she will return for, and Ghostbusters 3, which hinges on Bill Murray’s involvement. Weaver did say that, although she hasn’t read a Ghostbusters script, she did ask Ivan Reitman to have her character’s son grow up to be a Ghostbuster and he agreed. TIFF 2011: RAMPART Review

In his debut feature The Messenger, director Oren Moverman eschewed the simplistic and pandering Soldiers-with-PTSD story seen in films like Stop-Loss and In the Valley of Elah.  Moverman took a deeper look to see how two soldiers struggled to heal their personal wounds by examining how the men struggled to help others deal with the loss of loved ones.  It was a smart and unusual way to tell a story and he has continued that approach with Rampart.  Coupled with another astounding performance from Woody Harrleson, Moverman  turns the genre on its head by showing that one dirty cop’s warped sense of justice may be necessary to not only to the world, but to his own existence.

GHOSTBUSTERS Returning to Theaters This October

This should please fans of the franchise perhaps more so than Dan Aykroyd’s insistence that the third installment will shoot Spring 2012 with or without Bill Murray. The official Ghostbusters Facebook page [via AICN] has announced that director Ivan Reitman’s 1984 classic will receive a theatrical rerelease this October. As of now, there are few other details to be found regarding the rerelease (i.e. number of theaters, whether its film or DVD projection, etc.), only that the film will return to theaters next month.

Most likely, this is an attempt to gauge audience interest in a franchise that hasn’t seen a film installment in more than two decades. Regardless of the motive, as a fan who has never had the opportunity to watch the original on the silver screen, I can only hope that Ghostbusters will receive wide distribution that finally affords me that opportunity. Moreover, even skeptics of rereleases have to at least take solace in the fact that at least it isn’t Top Gun in 3D. We’ll be sure to share the details of this rerelease as soon as more emerge. In the meantime, I’m going to try and track down some “Ecto-Cooler” Hi-C.

First Clips from RAMPART Starring Woody Harrelson

The Messenger was one of the nice surprises of 2009, a nuanced look at the life of the American soldier.  The gang—Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster, and writer/director Oren Moverman—is getting back together for Rampart, which gives us hope for a nuanced look at the life of the American police officer.  Harrelson stars as “a never- changing LAPD cop (Woody Harrelson) whose past is finally catching up with him in the wake of a department-wide corruption scandal.” Foster is joined in the supporting cast by Ice Cube, Brie Larson, Sammy Boyarsky, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Sigourney Weaver, Ned Beatty, and Robin Wright.

Rampart is about halfway through its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival as I write this, but we have the first clips from the movie after the jump.

Dan Aykroyd Says GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Will Shoot Spring 2012 with or without Bill Murray

Dan Aykroyd loves to keep hope alive that there will be a Ghostbusters 3 someday even though I’ve never met anyone who was hoping for a new Ghostbusters movie.  Today, Aykroyd appeared on Dennis Miller’s radio show [via ComingSoon] and strongly hinted that the movie is happening in spring 2012 no matter what.  Seriously this time:

“Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray,” he says, “That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that ‘Ghostbusters’ is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of ‘Ghostbusters 3′ is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood.”

New Trailer for ABDUCTION Starring Taylor Lautner

The second trailer for The Lautner Iden—er—Abduction has hit the web. The film pegs Taylor Lautner as an action hero and centers on a young man who’s out to uncover the truth as to why a baby photo of himself wound up on a missing persons website. While the first trailer focused on telling the story, this one plays much more like a fast-cut TV spot that’s very heavy on the action and light on dialogue. I think Lautner only speaks once. The supporting cast is pretty impressive, but I still have trouble taking Lautner seriously as an action star.

Directed by John Singleton, the film stars Lautner, Lily Collins, Sigourney Weaver, Danny Glover, Alfred Molina, Michael Nyqvist, Maria Bello, and Jason Isaacs. Abduction opens on September 23^rd. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.
