I’m writing to you this week in full “World Series Mode.” While there are plenty of things going on around the Midwest this time of year (homemade haunted houses are always a welcomed annual treat), a majority of my focus is on trying to will my beloved Cardinals to Fall Classic glory. Combine that with the fact that Batman: Arkham City is consistently calling my name and it’s a wonder that I’m even writing this right now. Hold on, what’s that, Arkham City? Okay, okay…I’ll be there in a second…

…In this week’s installment, you’ll find talk of Transformers 4 and Transformers 5 shooting back-to-back with Jason Statham potentially starring, a six-minute prologue for The Dark Knight Rises being attached to Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol‘s IMAX release, interviews with director Paul W.S. Anderson and the cast of The Three Musketeers, David Fincher and Rooney Mara talking about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and William Monahan discussing projects including London Boulevard, The Departed sequel, Sin City 2 and more. Hit the jump for a brief recap and link to each.

Adaptation of Vampire Comic IN THE DUST Picked up by Solipsist Films; Update on SIN CITY 2: A DAME TO KILL FOR

It seems as if there’s no shortage of supernatural or undead properties for Hollywood to farm these days. The recent acquisition of Top Cow comic In the Dust suggests that the public still hungers for more vampiric fare. George Mahaffey, who co-created the graphic novel with Christian Duce, is slated to pen the adaptation.

In the Dust sends a government agent out to investigate the reported disappearances of small-town Midwest families during the “black blizzard” storms in the 1930s Dust Bowl. When an army of vampires are found to be the culprits, the agent forges a partnership with Al Capone’s gang to protect the vampires’ next target: Chicago. The 165-page graphic novel will hit shelves next year. Hit the jump for more on In the Dust and Sin City 2.

One of the most popular Best Picture winners of the past decade was 2006’s The Departed. The film had it all: a legendary director in Martin Scorsese, a star-studded cast that included Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg, and screenwriter William Monahan. The writer instantly became a household name and he won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar. Now, Monahan is hard at work on two highly anticipated projects: a remake of The Gambler and Sin City 2. A remake of the 1974 film starring James Caan, The Gambler reunites Monahan with his Departed director Scorsese and possibly DiCaprio too. The long-awaited Sin City sequel features the return of director Robert Rodriguez, bringing Frank Miller’s graphic novel to life once again.

A few days ago I got to speak with Monahan about his directorial debut London Boulevard (which is currently playing on VOD and opens in theaters November 11th). During the extended interview we talked about a wide variety of subjects and in the coming days you can expect the full interview.  However, as a tease, after the jump I’m offering updates on both The Gambler and Sin City 2, including what changes he’s making to The Gambler, how he views remakes, what approach he’s taking to adapting Frank Miller’s material on Sin City and more.

William Monahan to Work on Frank Miller’s Script for SIN CITY 2

Sin City 2, which has lived in development hell for the past six years, may finally be coming to life.  Director Robert Rodriguez says he now has financing for the flick and he would shoot the film before the year was out as long as he had a quality script.  However, he also hit upon a unique problem with the original Sin City in that the movie was not so much written as it simply used Frank Miller’s comics as a storyboard while bringing hardly anything new to the table.  It remains the strongest case for why a 100% faithful adaptation is pointless.

But I have some hope that Sin City 2 may be better because Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) is coming on board to work on the script.  Hit the jump for more.

Director Robert Rodriguez Talks SPY KIDS: ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD and SIN CITY 2

In 2001, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez launched the Spy Kids film franchise, a live-action, gadget-filled comedy adventure where kids became spies and families were the heroes. Now 10 years later, with new spies and cool new gadgets, the latest installment in the film franchise takes things to a whole new level with 4D Aromascope, making the moviegoing experience that much more interactive for audiences. This time around, the film focuses on former secret agent Marissa Cortez Wilson (Jessica Alba), the younger sister of Gregorio Cortez (Antonio Banderas), whose spy-hunting television reporter husband (Joel McHale) knows nothing about her past. When the maniacal Timekeeper (Jeremy Piven) threatens to take over the planet, Marissa is called back into action and her stepkids, Rebecca (Rowan Blanchard) and Cecil (Mason Cook), are forced to put their bickering aside and join together, as a family, to help their stepmom save the world.

At the press day for Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez talked about being able to relate to the notion of wanting to stop time to be with your family, how Jessica Alba being a new mom inspired both her character and the story itself, why he wanted to add a fourth dimension to the experience of seeing the film, and that he didn’t tell any of the actors about his idea for the Aromascope. He also talked about why he feels the need to direct the sequels to his films, and how they’re trying to finish the Sin City 2 script so that they can get the cast attached and start filming. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

During his Hall H panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, director Robert Rodriguez provided some brief updates on his Machete sequels and Sin City 2. At that time, he stated that the Machete sequels had been greenlit and that they would be titled Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again respectively. In regards to Sin City 2, Rodriguez claimed that the sequel would, like the first entry, center on three separate stories, two of which would be new and one that would adapt Frank Miller’s A Dame to Kill For. While doing press for his upcoming children’s film Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D, the director updated the status of each of the above properties a little more. Although not yet attached to the project, director Robert Rodriguez is already endorsing 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool.  In a recent interview with Hero Complex, Rodriguez said of the Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick screenplay, “It’s a great script and a great property.”  In regards to his potential involvement, the director admitted to having taken part in meetings with 20th Century Fox about directing the film.  However, he remained steadfast that nothing is official and that his next directorial effort is still very much up in the air.

While Deadpool is obviously one possibility for Rodriguez, he claimed that two other projects are also in play.  Hit the jump for more.

Robert Rodriguez Talks SIN CITY 2, NERVEWRACKERS, and THE JETSONS

Robert Rodriguez sat down with Empire Magazine (via The Playlist) and spoke about his myriad of projects that he has going on; namely: Sin City 2, Nervewrackers and The Jetsons. Robert Rodriguez (since the death of James Brown) has taken over the title of the hardest working man in show business as he is constantly attached to write/produce/direct projects left, right and center.

However, ever since he made Sin City in 2005 all comic book geeks across the board have been eagerly awaiting on the sequel.  Last year when Steve got to talk to the director he said that he was still thinking about doing it early 2010 and now in his interview with Empire Magazine he continues to be uncertain as to when he’ll actually get around to it.

Hit the jump for what Rodriguez had to say about his other upcoming projects, the sci-fi Nervewrackers, and a live-action adaptation of The Jetsons:

Robert Rodriguez Talks SIN CITY 2, MACHETE, and the Next SPY KIDS Movie

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: December 20th, 2009 at 6:02 pm

Robert Rodriguez - slice.jpg

A few days ago, I got to speak with Robert Rodriguez in Austin, Texas as I was visiting the set of Predators – along with a number of online journalists.  While a strict embargo prevents me from saying anything about that film, we’ve been given permission to run stories on other projects.  Since Robert Rodriguez is busy developing other movies, we got him to give us updates on Sin City 2, Machete, and what’s up with the next Spy Kids movie.

Regarding Spy Kids, Rodriguez says he’s already turned in the script to the Weinstein Company and it’s a reboot that will be shot in March or April with new kids.  On Machete, he says he’s “always talked about making him a franchise character”.  Meaning he’s like to do sequels.

Of course the news everyone wants to know is what’s up with Sin City 2.  Like he’s done in the past, he wouldn’t give us any specifics regarding when the film is going in front of the cameras.  But he did reveal “there has been a script since 2007″ and it has pre-existing material “with some original stuff added to it to kind of catch yourself up with some characters.”

Rodriguez also said, “I know Frank (Miller) wants to do it I know I wanna do it and its always sort of time permitting kind of thing, but its not like I can tell you definitely we’re starting…its not my next picture…I know that. Doesn’t mean that its not the picture right after because that’s still a possibility.”  Much more after the jump:

Updates on Frank Miller’s SIN CITY 2 and HARD BOILED

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: October 29th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

slice_sin_city_01.jpg

No matter how much excitement you may have for “Sin City 2″, I can’t imagined it was somewhat diminished by “The Spirit”, a film that had such potential had it only stuck to being bat-shit insane.  However, interest in a sequel to “Sin City” remains high and now the film may finally, after long last, go into production.  For news on that film plus Miller’s planned adaptation of his own comic, “Hard Boiled”, hit the jump.
