The CW President Mark Pedowitz Talks RINGER, SUPERNATURAL, NIKITA, GOSSIP GIRL, Developing More DC Superheroes, and More

As part of the TCA Press Tour presentation for The CW, President Mark Pedowitz took some time to talk about returning faces for the Fall, increased episode orders for a number of their already-established shows, the interest in developing other DC Comics properties now that Smallville has ended, and the possibility of remakes and re-boots of previous projects. Here are the most interesting points:

• One of the big goals of The CW is for more original programming, so that their TV shows don’t take as long of a break between episodes around the holiday season.
• The new Fall season will kick off on Monday, September 12^th with a special on Lady Gaga.
• The CW is thrilled to be the home of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Rachel Bilson’s return to television, with Ringer (premiering on September 13^th) and Hart of Dixie (premiering on September 26^th), respectively.
• There will be more original episodes this season for returning series Supernatural, Nikita, Gossip Girl and 90210, and the final season for One Tree Hill is currently set for 13 episodes in mid-season.
• This upcoming season is not intended to be the final season of Supernatural. They are hoping to keep the series going, but will evaluate it, one season at a time.
• Mark Pedowitz is a big believer in keeping casts together and hopes that the network will be able to do just that with the cast of Gossip Girl, even though they have busy film careers.
• After the success of Smallville, the network is looking at possible DC Comics superheroes to develop for series next year.
• They are very receptive to new projects that Tom Welling may be developing, either as the star or producer.

Warner Bros. to Once Again Slap Their Advertising on Your Room Key at Comic-Con

While fandom comes out in droves, the San Diego Comic-Con is a Mecca for entertainment advertising.  Warner Bros. is particularly adept at moving beyond the standard banners and posters and in the past they have used free gigantic bags and room keys to promote their TV shows.  This year, they’ll at least be doing the room keys again and they’ll be showcasing their new TV series Alcatraz and Person of Interest, the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, the DVD box set for Smallville: The Complete Series, and the video game The Lord of the Rings: War in the North.  There will be 40,000 room keys at 36 participating hotels and if you get one it will be a piece of plastic that you’ll cherish for the rest of your life.

Showrunners Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders Interview SMALLVILLE Series Finale

The story of Clark Kent (Tom Welling) culminates in a two-hour finale this week, as the shy teenager from Smallville, that viewers met 10 seasons ago, finally takes the last steps to becoming the Man of Steel. Of course, with any finale, it’s difficult to please all of the fans, but when dealing with a mythology as popular as the story of Superman, it’s nearly impossible. However, executive producers/showrunners Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders are clearly proud of what they were able to do, in wrapping up as much as they could – whether it was with a Lois (Erica Durance) and Clark wedding, Clark’s friendship with Chloe (Allison Mack), the relationship between Chloe and Oliver (Justin Hartley), the threat of Darkseid and Apocalypse, and the return of Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) – and hope that the fans who have followed the series will get what they are looking for in this final Smallville episode.

At a recent press event for the finale, Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders talked about viewers finally getting to see the finale, balancing wrapping up the various storylines of 10 seasons with the journey of Clark Kent, the return of Lex Luthor and how close it came to not happening, the possibility of future glimpses of the characters, special features and extras that will be on the complete series DVD box set, and the emotional impact of the final moments of the series. They also said that, although there has been no talk yet of any spin-offs, they do think there will be a Smallville comic book, at some point. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

2-Hour SMALLVILLE Series Finale Airs Friday, May 13

After ten years on television, The CW’s Smallville is close to airing it’s series finale.  While some might have thought the network would find a way to continue the adventures of Clark Kent as the ratings have been steady even after switching to Friday nights, The CW has just announced that Smallville will end with a two-hour finale on Friday, May 13.  In a statement, executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souder said:

“Paying homage to 10 seasons is no small task, and wrapping up each character and story arc has been extremely important to everyone involved in the show.  We’re excited to be able to make the final moments of SMALLVILLE a television event, as the character we’ve grown up with makes his legendary transformation.”

What I love about this announcement is that it will hopefully lead to a great finale that wraps up a decade of storylines.  As a fan of the show, I’m hoping the last shot is Tom Welling as Superman, in the sky, overlooking Metropolis.   Hit the jump for the press release:

Al Gough and Miles Millar created Smallville for television in 2001 and breathed new life into the Superman mythology, taking Clark Kent (Tom Welling) back to his high school days and following him journey in becoming a superhero. Now in its 10^th and final season, it is the longest-running comic book based series in television history.

During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, the writer/producer team talked about how cool it is to have developed a series that has been on the air for a decade, how they’d never been a fan of Superman prior to creating Smallville, and how they always hoped the final moment of the series would see Clark Kent suiting up and flying off to his destiny as Superman.

Also included are their thoughts from the press day roundtable about Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, since they wrote the screen story for Spider-Man 2, and why they think the character is viable for a stage musical. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Al Gough and Miles Millar Exclusive Interview CHARLIE’S ANGELS

Al Gough and Miles Millar are a prolific writer/producer team with a string of successful hits on both the large and small screens. Currently, they are deep into developing an edgy remake of the 1970s classic television series Charlie’s Angels for ABC, with the pilot set to shoot in March. With Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights), Rachael Taylor (Transformers) and Annie Ilonzeh (General Hospital) set as their Angels, and Robert Wagner as the voice of Charlie, the pair are hoping to surprise audiences with a really great show that will confound expectations.

During a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Al Gough and Miles Millar talked in-depth about everything from this re-imagined update, to their time on the critically acclaimed CW series Smallville, currently in its 10^th and final season, to their upcoming feature film I Am Number Four (due in theaters on February 18^th), to their writing partnership. Erica Durance Interview SMALLVILLE

In its 10^th and final season, the CW drama series Smallville is pulling out all the stops, as it concludes its modern retelling of a hero’s legendary origins. Throughout its popular run, it has continued to blend realism, action, heart and humor as Clark Kent (Tom Welling) soars toward claiming his birthright as Superman. With just half of the season remaining, fans of the show and its lead actors are starting to speculate about what they will get to see their beloved characters do before the show’s conclusion.

During a recent interview to promote the February 4^th return of all-new episodes, actress Erica Durance talked about what she would like to see Lois Lane do before the end of the season, what she’s brought to the iconic role, the feedback she’s gotten from fellow Lois Lane actress Margot Kidder, what she loves most about Lois, the storylines and the superheroes she’s most enjoyed seeing on the show, being directed by Tom Welling, and what she’d like to keep from the set. Laura Vandervoort Exclusive Interview V

Actress Laura Vandervoort has become well-known to sci-fi fans for her work both as Supergirl on the popular TV series Smallville, currently in its 10^th and final season, and currently as Lisa, the daughter of the Queen of the alien visitors on the drama series V. Being groomed to take over the throne by her mother while her heart lies with the Fifth Column resistence movement, her character Lisa is becoming more and more conflicted as she has to hide her true emotions from the V’s on the mothership or risk putting her life in jeopardy.

At the party celebrating the ABC portion of the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, Laura Vandervoort talked about her character’s journey in Season 2, getting to make Lisa a little more human in her behavior and appearance, and how shocked she thinks viewers will be by the season finale. The CW Reveals Midseason Schedule as Leighton Meester Announces Departure from GOSSIP GIRL in Two Years

Though there aren’t any new series that we care about joining The CW’s programming line-up in January, there’s likely plenty of people who will be interested in the new season of America’s Next Top Model. For information the season premiere of the reality series and an-all new one, you can hit the jump. However, the big news for fans of The CW’s most popular series comes from Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester. The actress revealed to E! Online that she will be leaving the show after her contract expires. That gives fans two more years of Meester living it up with the promiscuous upper class snobs of the popular series, so enjoy it while you can. Cassidy Freeman Exclusive Interview SMALLVILLE

In the Smallville episode “Luthor,” premiering on December 3^rd, Tess (Cassidy Freeman) acquires a Kryptonian box that once belonged to Lionel Luthor (John Glover). When Clark Kent (Tom Welling) accidentally activates the box, he’s transported to a parallel universe where Lionel found Clark in the cornfields instead of the Kents. In this universe, everything is different – Clark Luthor is a murderer and Lois Lane (Erica Durance) is engaged to Oliver Queen (Justin Hartley) – and Clark Kent must figure out how to get back to Earth where Clark Luthor was transported in his place.

Now in its 10^th and final season, this modern retelling of a hero’s legendary origins is upping the stakes for everyone, as it nears its series conclusion. In a recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Cassidy Freeman, who plays a character that walks a fine line between good and villainous herself, talked about how surprised she’s been by Tess’ emotional depth over the last couple of seasons, how incredible it was to find out that Tess is actually a Luthor, what it’s been like to work with Tom Welling as both a co-star and a director, and the fact that there are qualities in Tess that she both admires and would like to change. Alan Ritchson Exclusive Interview SMALLVILLE

The popular CW series Smallville is currently in its 10^th and final season, pulling out all the stops to go out with a bang for its loyal fans. In this week’s episode, “Patriot,” there are life-and-death stakes once again, as Oliver (Justin Hartley), aka Green Arrow, decides to register for the Vigilante Registration Act, which turns out to be a trick to lure superheroes to an undisclosed location where they can be confined to a jail and subjected to brutal tests under the supervision of Col. Slade (Michael Hogan). As a result, Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman, returns with his new wife Mera (Elena Satine) to team up with Clark Kent (Tom Welling) to free Oliver.

In this exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Alan Ritchson talked about the journey his character has taken over the five years he has recurred on the series, working with Tom Welling as the director of this episode, and his hopes for the remainder of the final season. Teri Hatcher Will Play Lois Lane’s Mother in the Tenth and Final Season of SMALLVILLE

While I have to admit I’m not the biggest fan of Smallville, this new casting announcement is just some fantastic news. EW has found out that along with the growing list of returning cast members from seasons passed (including John Glover as Lionel Luther and Laura Vandervoort as Supergirl), producers have convinced Teri Hatcher to play Lois Lane’s (Erica Durance) mother during the comic book series’ tenth and final season.

Just in case anyone out there is too young or simply doesn’t remember, Hatcher played Lois Lane herself in ABC’s 90′s TV series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. It pretty much gave her the career she has today. And If you hardcore Smallville fans are already freaking out, because Lois’ mother has been dead for quite awhile, don’t panic just yet. In the eighth episode of the forthcoming season Lois finds some old videotapes with her mother in them. Get it? Good. The tenth and final season of Smallville premieres Friday, September 24th at 8/7c on The CW and it sounds like fans shouldn’t miss one minute of it.

SMALLVILLE The Complete Ninth Season Blu-Ray Review

What can one say about a show that has been on television for nine whole seasons and only has one more to go? It’s quality, baby. Smallville is a fun and compelling show that just gets better with age, one with the bravery to prune away old characters that have run their course and to add brilliant new ones. Some characters I really do miss, like the evil and misguided Lex Luthor, as played by Michael Rosenbaum. Also Jonathan “Pa” Kent, played by John “awesome” Schneider. One character that serves the “I’m explaining the technical reasons about what’s going on here” purpose but that I could easily live without: Chloe Sullivan.  Finally, a character that I love beyond all reason: Lois Lane. Yes, Tom Welling is like a well-oiled (and extremely good looking) machine; he gives a first-rate acting performance and makes even die-hard comic book fans believe that he really is Superman. But, when it all comes down to it, it’s Lois, played by the brilliant and funny Erica Durance that makes me excited to see what’s going to happen to Clark next. She really is the best Lois Lane ever captured on film to date.  More after the jump:

TV Call Casting: Robert Englund Scares CHUCK, Ashmore Brothers Join FRINGE, Aquaman Returns to SMALLVILLE, and Katee Sackhoff Guests on CSI

Here’s a quartet of TV casting updates coming right at ya. First up, EW has word that Robert Englund, the man behind the original Freddy Krueger, has signed on as a guest star on the forthcoming season of Chuck. The episode titled Chuck vs the Aisle of Terror is set to appropriately air around Halloween with Englund playing Dr Stanley Wheelwright, an evil scientist who can make your waking life a nightmare. Shouldn’t too difficult of a role for Englund to step into, and the content certainly allows plenty of opportunities for homage and jokes. Englund joins a whole slew of guest stars in Chuck’s fourth season including Linda Hamilton, Timothy Dalton, Eric Roberts, Lou Ferrigno, Dolph Lundgren and more.

Official Description of SMALLVILLE Season 10
