Benjamin Bratt has joined the cast of the Snitch, an action thriller led by Dwayne Johnson. Johnson plays “a father forced to become an informant for the DEA to reduce his falsely accused son’s 10-year jail sentence.” According to Variety, Bratt is a big name in the Mexican drug trade who complicates the situation for Johnson’s character.
Susan Sarandon, Barry Pepper, Jon Bernthal, Melina Kanakaredes, Michael K. Williams, Rafi Gavron, and Nadine Velazquez also star in the film, inspired by true events. Production started this week in Louisiana under the direction of Ric Roman Waugh. Snitch is tentatively scheduled for an early 2013 release.

Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire) is in talks to join Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained and Ric Roman Waugh‘s Snitch. Williams was championed by the online community to play the eponymous slave-turned-bounty-hunter in Django Unchained, but the part ended up going to Jamie Foxx after Will Smith passed on the role. However, Deadline reports that Williams is in talks to play a supporting role, most likely the muscle for plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Williams’ reps are trying work out a deal with HBO so Williams can balance Django with his shooting schedule for the third season Boardwalk Empire.
Django Unchained also stars Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, M.C. Gainey, Dennis Christopher, Gerald McRaney, Laura Cayouette, Don Johnson, Tom Savini, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film opens on December 25, 2012. Hit the jump for details on Williams’ role in Snitch. [Update: Deadline is now reporting that Williams' reps couldn't get him out of his Boardwalk Empire schedule, so Django Unchained is scrapping the role entirely. There's your sad movie news of the day.]

Actress Susan Sarandon is currently in negotiations to join the action thriller Snitch. Ric Roman Waugh (Felon) is directing, and Dwayne Johnson is set to star as a father whose teenage son is hit with a 30-year prison sentence due to mandatory minimum drug laws. Johnson takes matters into his own hands and goes undercover to take down a senior drug dealer in order to reduce his son’s sentence. The story is based on a Frontline documentary, and Waugh rewrote Justin Haythe’s script himself.
Heat Vision reports that Sarandon will be playing “an ambitious U.S. attorney who believes that a drug bust can help her political career.” The role was originally envisioned as male, but pairing The Rock with Susan Sarandon was presumably too awesome to turn down so the part was reconfigured. Sarandon recently wrapped the Adam Sandler/Andy Sandberg comedy I Hate You Dad and is currently filming the Wachowskis’ adaptation of Cloud Atlas and Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep.

With the Cannes Film Festival ongoing, we’ve got a couple of acquisition stories for you today. First off, Variety reports that The Weinstein Company is in talks to grab the rights to John Hillcoat’s The Wettest County in the World. The film features a fantastic cast that includes Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, Mia Wasikowska, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Dane DeHaan, and Jessica Chastain. The story centers on two brothers who become bootleggers in the South during Prohibition. TWC has been busy at Cannes, snatching up the sure-to-be Oscar contender The Iron Lady a few days ago.
Additionally, Variety reports that Summit has grabbed U.S. distribution rights to the action thriller Snitch. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh (Felon), the film stars Dwayne Johnson and centers on a suburban dad who goes undercover to convict a drug dealer in order to reduce his teenage son’s 30-year prison sentence.

Dwayne Johnson is in negotiations to star in Snitch, an action thriller that New Line has been developing for years. Ric Roman Waugh (Felon) will direct and rewrite the script by Justin Haythe, which centers on a suburban dad who goes undercover to convict a drug dealer in order to reduce his teenage son’s 30-year prison sentence. That logline first sounded silly to me, but it turns out Snitch is based on the true story of devoted father James Settembrino, as documented in the Frontline segment “Snitch.” Read more about the story after the jump.
