Comedy Central Announces 2011-2012 Midseason Premiere Dates for SOUTH PARK and TOSH.0

by Ethan Anderton    Posted: December 1st, 2011 at 4:34 pm

Comedy Central just sent over their premiere dates for the 2011-2012 midseason, and while most of their series don’t usually show up around this time, South Park will be making its triumphant return for a sixteenth season on March 14th while Tosh.0 will come back with fresh meat from the internet on January 31st, marking its fourth season. However, the real exciting news is that The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report will come back right after the New Year on January 3rd to really start digging into their Indecision 2012 coverage in this election year.

Cable’s longest running animated series will last even longer as Comedy Central just announced that South Park has been renewed for three more seasons, which will take the series into their milestone 20th season. And as if it needs to be pointed out, series creators, writers, directors and stars Trey Parker and Matt Stone will continue to be at the helm of every single episode. The duo contributed a quick quote of standard publicity fluff saying, “Comedy Central has been our home for 15 years and we love working there. South Park is a blast and we can’t wait to make more.” The show continues to be topical, irreverent and smart in its comedy, and it’s good to hear that we’ve secured another few years with Cartman, Stan, Kyle and Kenny. Trailer for SOUTH PARK Documentary 6 DAYS TO AIR Premiering on October 9th

It’s no secret that a lot of work goes into an episode of an animated series, but when it comes to Comedy Central’s long-running series South Park, you might be shocked to learn that each episodes is completed in just under one week. This explains how the series from longtime collaborator Trey Parker and Matt Stone remains so topical and relevant every single week, but it also means that when South Park is in production, the pressure is on to deliver, just like an episode of Saturday Night Live. Perhaps that explains why someone like SNL cast member Bill Hader is on the writing staff and makes several appearances in this promising new documentary 6 Days to Air which will premiere on Comedy Central on October 9th.

Despite the obvious stress of putting together a half-hour animated comedy in just a week, Parker and Stone seem to be enjoying themselves immensely and always make time to joke around. Other highlights include a professional sounding conversation about characters shitting into each other’s mouths and someone farting into the PA system at the South Park offices. The new season of South Park premieres October 5th at 10/9c, but see the trailer for what looks to be an eye-opening look behind-the-scenes of the series after the jump.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are riding pretty high these days with their insanely successful Broadway show The Book Of Mormon piling up profits and Tonys. As a result, Comedy Central is keen to remind everyone that the comedy geniuses still have an animated series on their network and are planning to air a big retrospective documentary about the making of South Park this fall. Given the fact that the guys run an entire studio dedicated to South Park on the opposite end of the country, it should be pretty interesting. Hit the jump for more details on the upcoming doc.

SOUTH PARK Renewed for Two More Seasons Keeping the Show on the Air through 2013

Lest you thought that the bleak finale of the first half of season 15 this past May meant the end of South Park, the show has been renewed for two more seasons keeping the series on Comedy Central through 2013. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone ended the first half of this season with a bit of a downer episode focusing on Stan’s cynicism ruining his friendships while his parents complained about the repetitiveness of their marriage in what some saw as a not-so-thinly-veiled metaphor for the Parker and Stone’s exhaustion with the series.

However, the two quickly put rumors of the show’s end to rest as they reassured audiences that they wanted to continue with the series while appearing on The Daily Show, and now EW confirms that the Parker and Stone are signed on through 2013. The new order will bring the total number of seasons up to 17, with the second half of season 15 kicking off on October 5th with seven new episodes.

SOUTH PARK: THE COMPLETE FOURTEENTH SEASON Blu-ray Review

We’re fifteen seasons in on South Park, and the show has fallen into a comfortable groove. Matt Stone and Trey Parker went through some rough periods, but they have a system now: Generally there’s going to be some (very) topical episodes, some character episodes with many of those paired to something going on in pop culture, and now a number of multi-episode arcs that tend to fall back on fantasy or science fiction. And – though they sometimes get into beating up on things that may not deserve it or go too hard on something self-evident – the show delivers the laughs. Our review of the Blu-ray of South Park: The Complete Fourteenth Season on Blu-ray is after the jump.

Bill Hader Exclusive Interview PAUL; Updates on Future Projects, SNL, SOUTH PARK, and a Lot More

Over the last week, we’ve been posting parts of my exclusive interview with Bill Hader (how he’s a writer on South Park, updates on The Hand Job and other future projects, and SNL).  The reason I got to speak with this very talented comedian is that he has a supporting role in director Greg Mottola’s Paul – which stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.  In the film, Hader plays a Federal Agent who is tasked with helping to locate Paul.

During our extended interview, Hader talked about working with Pegg and Frost, how much was in the script and how much was improv, how Mottola told him to prepare for the film, filming on a very famous street in New Mexico, and a lot more on making Paul.  Hit the jump for the interview and remember to see Paul this weekend!

Bill Hader Talks about Writing for SOUTH PARK

Anyone who has seen Bill Hader on Saturday Night Live or his supporting work in films like Superbad and Adventureland knows he’s hilarious.  But did you know that Hader also writes for South Park?  I did not and now I do and I think we’re all better for the experience.

Steve recently interviewed Hader (who’s doing press for Paul) and asked how he came to be credited as a creative consultant on season 12.  Hader explains how the writing behind the show works and that he’s still on board as a consulting writer and will be going on a three-week retreat in April where showrunners Trey Parker and Matt Stone hash out their ideas.  For those curious as to how the South Park machine works, hit the jump.  The 15th season of South Park premieres Wednesday, April 27th at 10pm on Comedy Central.  You can expect Steve’s full interview with Hader this week.

Collider Previews Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s New Musical THE BOOK OF MORMON

Comedic masterminds Trey Parker and Matt Stone aren’t strangers to the musical world – along with their debut film Cannibal: The Musical and the many catchy tunes of South Park, they also crafted one of the greatest movie musicals of all time: South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. Few artisans posses the ability to blend showtunes and scatological humor with such ease.

Now, the duo is taking their passion for musical satire to the Great White Way, launching their first Broadway show with a subject matter of which they are quite familiar. The Book of Mormon, written by Parker, Stone and Avenue Q co-writer Robert Lopez, tells the tale of two Mormon missionaries who travel to Uganda to convert the locals. Of course, it’s dirty as all hell.

A full run-down of the first 25 minutes of the show and a few of Parker and Stone’s thoughts, after the jump.

SOUTH PARK Takes on INCEPTION

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: October 21st, 2010 at 11:28 am

inception_south_park_image_slice_01

Inception may have come out in July, but South Park only airs in the spring and fall so you’ll forgive creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone for just now getting in their shots at Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi heist thriller.  I thought Inception was fantastic, but I’m open to clever mocking of it.  Last night’s episode of South Park, “Insheeption”, had its moments of brilliance (the psychiatrist “singing” the Inception trailer music; Woodsy the Owl) and jokes that didn’t work at all (the Sheep Herder).  South Park is a hit-and-miss show and I think while last night’s episode was good, they could have come up with something better than making fun of all the dream layers.  However, there’s enough funny stuff in the episode to make it worth your time.

Click here to check out the new South Park episode, “Insheeption”.  South Park airs Wednesday nights at 10/9c on Comedy Central.

Statement from SOUTH PARK Creators About Last Night’s Censored Episode

by Andrew Robinson    Posted: April 22nd, 2010 at 4:49 pm

Comedy Central aired the 201st episode of Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s South Park last night. The episode was a continuation of the storyline from the 200th episode which was about Muhammad and how people don’t make fun of him because of religious fanatics.

When I sat down to watch the episode, I was shocked at the level of censorship.  Unlike the 200th episode, the 201st featured tons of bleeps; especially whenever they said Muhammad.  I was left wondering whether the complete change in the censorship was a joke in itself.  Today Stone and Parker released a statement.  Hit the jump for more:

Lampooned Celebrities Aren’t Gonna Take It Anymore in South Park’s 200th Episode

by Matt Currie    Posted: April 9th, 2010 at 3:33 pm

slice_south_park_celebrities_01.jpg

One of the things I like most about South Park is that creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are pretty much indiscriminate in their subversion. They take potshots at everything and everyone. Whether you’re liberal or conservative, religious or agnostic, Al Gore or Oprah Winfrey’s vagina, eventually they’re going to come after you. Because of this approach, they’ve racked up quite the eclectic array of cartoonified celebrity antagonists over the years. And next week, in a very special episode, the chickens are coming home to roost.

Episode 200 of the Comedy Central staple will feature every celeb the show has skewered over the past 13 seasons and change launching a lawsuit against the town, seemingly led (based on the promo) by perpetually face-stuffing health nut Rob Reiner, closet-loving Scientologist Tom Cruise, and bat-shit crazy anti-Semite Mel Gibson. While the show only runs about 21 minutes, hopefully all of our other favorite scathing star caricatures will get some screen time as more than just background inserts. Personally, I’m jonesing for some more “So I pull out my gun!” R. Kelly. Hit the jump for a peek at the episode.

SOUTH PARK Gets Sucked Into the World of Facebook and TRON

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 8th, 2010 at 9:35 am

slice_south_park_tron_01.jpg

While last night’s South Park couldn’t top last week’s episode (and let’s be honest-not much can), they still got in some good commentary on the addicting power of Facebook.  In the episode, Stan is forced into using Facebook because everyone else using it.  These are the best kind of Stan episodes: where he’s the only sane voice and everyone else is acting like a dumbass (my favorite instance of this is the episode, “The Biggest Douche in the Universe“).

SOUTH PARK Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone Are Ready To Go Off Broadway

by Jackson Cresswell    Posted: January 28th, 2010 at 9:57 pm

slice_trey_parker_matt_stone_01.jpg

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the minds behind Comedy Central’s hit series South Park, are finishing up on their latest project.  A new TV series?  Another movie?  Nope. According to Variety, the two are working on an off Broadway musical rumored to be about Mormons.  There haven’t been a whole lot of details regarding the project, but what is known is that the musical is slated for an August-September run in the New York Theater Workshop.

Hearing that the South Park guys are producing a stage play might seem ridiculous and it absolutely is.  But that doesn’t mean that it can’t be great.  Let’s look at the facts here.  Matt and Trey have long had a comedic fascination with Mormons.  The title character of the pair’s Orgazmo is a Mormon.  And the Mormons are constant fodder on South Park.  An entire episode was dedicated to trashing Joseph Smith while another episode plainly stated that Mormons are the only people would be allowed into Heaven.  To be fair, though, Mormons are far from the only religion to take a bashing from Parker and Stone.  Catholicism has been lampooned several times.  Any given episode might have Cartman spouting anti-Semitic insults at Kyle, or Jesus appearing in Imaginationland.  Even Scientology and Atheism have been raked over the coals.  As disrespectful and irreverent as Parker and Stone can be about religion, their takes on religion are usually clever and almost always genuinely funny.  Hit the jump for more on why this is almost as great as taking revenge on Scott Tenorman.
