At Spike TV’s “Guys Choice Awards” (because guys so rarely get to decide just about everything) the male cast of Fast Times at Ridgemont High and director Amy Heckerling reunited on stage and Sean Penn brought back his breakthrough role as Jeff Spicoli for about two seconds by saying “Aloha, Mr. Hand” as only Spicoli could say it. Spicoli is a funny role these days because it’s such a light role and Penn has devoted himself to serious movies and serious issues for the majority of his career. The last time he did an (intentional) comedy was 1999′s Sweet and Lowdown (2001′s I Am Sam is pretty hilarious). I can’t help but wonder if audiences could even accept Penn in a comic role today.

It’s awards season, and while praiseworthy films like The Social Network and The King’s Speech are all critics and press can talk about, comedy is generally consistently overlooked at the Oscars. And while the Golden Globe offers an award for Best Musical or Comedy, it’s nearly impossible to compare the two evenly, and The Hollywood Foreign Press nominates laughless films like The Tourist in that category anyway. Well Comedy Central and MTV Networks have had enough of that nonsense. While laughter might be the best reward for any comedian, the two networks have decided to create The Comedy Awards, a broadcast awards event to honor the best comedy films, actors, TV series, digital content and stand-up acts. It’s about damn time.

Held at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and airing on October 19th, Spike TV’s “Scream Awards 2010″ is an annual event commemorating all things sci-fi, fantasy, horror and comic books. The hottest films, TV shows, comics, actors, creators and icons that have influenced and shaped these genres were honored, and world premiere footage from some of the most anticipated theatrical and television releases were showcased.
Such famous faces as Halle Berry, Megan Fox, Mickey Rourke, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively were greeted by cheers from the packed house of costumed fans, while Sigourney Weaver emerged from a giant pod to accept an award from James Cameron, and Bill Murray appeared in full Ghostbusters gear to claim an award for Zombieland. Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd got a much-deserved standing ovation as they reunited with the DeLorean to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Back to the Future, and the Comic-Con Icon Award went to much-beloved author Ray Bradbury for his dedication to the annual pop-culture festival. With its 5th annual “Scream Awards” only weeks away, Spike TV is building momentum for its latest incarnation “Scream 2010.” At the beginning of the month, the show announced its nominees. Today, Spike has revealed that “Scream 2010″ will feature world premiere footage from Scream 4, Paranormal Activity 2, and The Rite. In case that isn’t compelling enough television for Spike to earn your rating points, the awards ceremony is also set to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Back to the Future with guest appearances from cast members including Michael J. Fox, Lea Thompson, and Elisabeth Shue. Other confirmed attendees include Wes Craven, Aaron Eckhart, and Sigourney Weaver.
Per the giant picture at the top of the article, “Scream 2010″ premieres on Spike TV October 19th at 9pm ET. As for the footage premiering, Scream 4 is scheduled to open April 15th of next year, Paranormal Activity 2 will release in a few weeks on October 22nd, and The Rite starring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Rutger Hauer hits theaters January 28th, 2011. Also, keep in mind that the “Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy” releases on Blu-ray/DVD October 26th. Hit the jump to check out the full press release.

Paramount Pictures has announced their intent to develop Spike TV’s Deadliest Warrior as a feature film. The show pits historical warriors of varying backgrounds against each other, and analyzes the data to determine who would win in a direct fight. Warrior just wrapped its second season, and has featured such battles as:
The film’s storyline is under wraps, but this has the makings of a really cool franchise. I hope they don’t spend too much exposition on how these battles came to be (i.e. any dialogue that requires the phrase “time-space continuum”). Plenty of great combinations to choose from, though Paramount may create its own, or set up a tournament of sorts. Definitely eager to see how this one shapes up, and I really need to start watching the show. Hit the jump for the press release.

The nominees for Spike TV’s “Scream 2010” have been announced and Christopher Nolan’s Inception leads all films with fourteen nominations. While there are certainly more prestigious awards that films (especially Inception) would like to be honored with, the award show always looks like a good time from my couch and I imagine it’s nice to be recognized for your work regardless of the outlet. Moreover, while fans may vote for the winners, the nominees themselves are chosen by an advisory board made up of industry professionals including: Tim Burton, John Carpenter, Wes Craven, Neil Gaiman, Eli Roth, Quentin Tarantino, and Joss Whedon. In short, it’s not like the kind people at Spike are calling me up asking for my opinion on who deserves a “Scream” nod (Note: I am available just in case though).
Officially, the “Scream Awards” honor “the best in sci-fi, fantasy, comics, and horror” and will air on Spike on October 19th. In addition, they are responsible for one of the few times a year that I feel compelled to watch Spike TV (I’ll admit to occasionally indulging in an episode or five of Pros vs. Joes). In preparation for their annual Video Game Awards, Spike TV has put up a quick glimpse of the trailer for the new Tron video game. The game is currently set to release sometime in 2010 to coincide with the release Tron Legacy, the long-awaited sequel to the 1982 sci-fi flick Tron. The original film was about a video game designer named Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) getting downloaded into his company’s mainframe and having to fight his way back to the real world by defeating the Master Control Program. The sequel takes place in 2010 where Flynn’s son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund) is searching for his missing father. The original Tron also inspired a video game, which was released in arcades in 1982. For our younger readers, arcades were rooms which were devoted to video games and you put in quarters if you wanted to continue playing. No one used the term “pwned” and 12-year-olds didn’t dare use gay or ethnic slurs against other players. It was a simpler time.
