Leonard Nimoy slice Hero Complex Film Festival

Friday night in Hollywood, the first ever Hero Complex Film Festival kicked off with a screening of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home followed by a Q&A with star, director and legend Leonard Nimoy.  The Voyage Home is simply known as “the one with the whales” for most Trek fans, but certainly holds a special place in their heart.  Not being a major Trek fan myself, I enjoyed rewatching the film simply with the question in my head, “If I was a Star Trek fan in 1986, desperate for a new film, what would I have thought if I was presented with THAT?”  Long story short, I probably would have been taken back.  But today, it stands as a very entertaining, almost screwball environmental comedy.

Saturday, the festival features Insomnia and The Dark Knight with special guest Christopher Nolan and Sunday is Alien and Blade Runner and with Ridley Scott.  Check back then for a recap of those Q&A.  But for now, hit the jump for the bullet points of the one hour plus Nimoy Q&A.

Crazy Deal on STAR TREK Blu-rays: WRATH OF KHAN, VOYAGE HOME, and UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, and All 3 Seasons 50% Off

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 3rd, 2010 at 2:15 pm

Trekkers who have been waiting for to grab the Blu-rays of their favorite franchise are getting some crazy love today.  TrekMovie.com reports that Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country are all 50% off at BestBuy.com.  Or to break it down, the films are $9.99 each.

It gets better.  The 3-Disc Blu-ray of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek (Three-Disc Edition) [Blu-ray] is 75% off at Amazon, bringing the price down to $9.99.  Amazon is also slashing the Blu-rays of The Original Series by 50%.  Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 1 [Blu-ray]is $64.49 , season two Star Trek: The Original Series – Season Two [Blu-ray] is $65.49 , and season three Star Trek: The Original Series – Season 3 [Blu-ray] is $49.99 (the third season is actually 62% off). I don’t know about living long, but this ain’t a bad way to prosper.

John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore to star in WHALES for Director Ken Kwapis

John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore to star in WHALES for Director Ken Kwapis.jpg

John Krasinski and Drew Barrymore are set to star in director Ken Kwapis’ (License to Wed) Whales.  Universal Pictures hopes to shoot this fall – depending on Krasinski’s Office schedule.  The movie is based on a real event from 1988 when a trio of California gray whales got trapped under the ice in the Arctic Circle.  Deadline says:

Krasinski will play a small town newspaper reporter who breaks the story. Barrymore plays a Greenpeace activist, and they turn the potential tragedy into an international story. The incident created a temporary Cold War thaw as President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev found a common cause. They interceded to save the whales.

Since certain countries hunt whales and the magnificent creatures are still threatened (how quickly everyone forgot what Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home taught us), I’m on board with any movie that might help save some of them in the future.  Even if Ken Kwapis is directing it.
