Here’s some unfortunate news for fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It looks like Lucasfilm has plans to wind down the animated series after five successful seasons. No new episodes will be produced for Cartoon Network, but some story arcs are being developed and will be available elsewhere as bonus material. Another animated series – Seth Green’s Star Wars: Detours – won’t even get off the ground as the execs have decided to postpone the comedy, which was planned before the new film trilogy was announced. In the wake of Disney’s recent $4 billion purchase of Lucasfilm, it looks like Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be the first casualty. Don’t worry, fans, the show itself will remain on the air, but its home will most likely be changing. Having aired on Turner Entertainment’s Cartoon Network for its five-year run, the licensing rights were previously renewed with Lucasfilm each year; those rights run out at the end of the current 2012-2013 season. While the prequels have a poor reputation among many Star Wars fans, Star Wars: The Clone Wars has proven that there are worthy stories to be told within that time period. The cartoon show has introduced new characters and shown many more die. While it certainly follows Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the side characters are put in constant mortal peril and it creates a thrilling journey. Darth Maul has been revived in the series despite missing half of his torso (he’s a little stir-crazy when we first meet him), and the panel talked quite a bit about the upcoming season while also explaining the tremendous Umbara story arc that was one of the highlights of Season Four.
Instead of having the voice cast twiddle their thumbs as they rarely make creative decisions, last Saturday’s panel featured the talents of supervising director David Filoni and head writer Matt Michnovetz moderated by Star Wars author Pablo Hidalgo. With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I can’t help but think that Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum’s The Vow is Hollywood’s way of saying, “We know you suck at planning romantic Valentine’s dates, so why not pay us to take care of that for you?”. And you know what? They’re right. I’ve already reserved a couple of tix for the pic and, just like that, I’m basically a romance deity (Note: “Romance deity” may be a slight exaggeration”).

With the release of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace 3D this weekend, Twentieth Century Fox recently hosted a press junket at Skywalker Ranch and Lucasfilm. In an effort to promote the experience for the next generation, my seven year-old daughter, Cyan, interviewed four people who helped bring George Lucas’ vision to life. Her final interview was with Joel Aron, CG Supervisor for Star Wars: The Clone Wars the animated series. They discussed how Darth Maul could come back if he’d been cut in half, the most rewarding part of working on Star Wars, who his favorite character is, his Sith name, and more. Hit the jump to watch.

Tonight we’re bringing you three different bits of Star Wars news in one conveniently tidy package. First up, we now know that the Star Wars Blu-ray collections (whose pre-orders we told you about a few weeks ago) will be released later this year on September 27th. For those you of who held out on pre-ordering your copy until a firm release date was announced, you can finally push that excuse aside. Next, the Star Tours attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida will return from nine months of renovations on May 20th of this year. Referred to as Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, Disney Parks Blog confirms that the 3D attraction will feature “new droids, a new Starspeeder, and a new pilot” in the form of C-3PO. How do you take a cult-character who unexpectedly found love among fans despite his minor role and then stick it to all those fans? Well, in the case of Boba Fett from Star Wars, you remove all the mystique of the character turn him from a perceived bad-ass into a sullen child with daddy issues. Now kids who enjoy Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Cartoon Network will get to enjoy the character as a sullen teenager. USA Today reports that “A teenage version of Fett will appear next month in the popular Cartoon Network show The Clone Wars, bridging the generational gap between fans of the original trilogy and kids reared largely on the prequels.” I suppose “ruining” constitutes some kind of bridge…

With director Chris Columbus’ Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief opening this Friday, I was able to talk with screenwriter Craig Titley (Scooby-Doo, Cheaper by the Dozen) about his involvement in the project yesterday afternoon. During the interview, we talked about writing Percy Jackson, his involvement in Star Wars: The Clone Wars cartoon (he’s written two episodes), and what’s up with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. And just to clarify the 20,000 Leagues story, two competing projects were going at the same time last year, one was at Disney with McG helming, and one was being developed at New Line with Sam Raimi’s company. Titley wrote the New Line one. During the interview he talks about his take on the material and what it’s about.
