Sir Ben Kingsley is apparently itching to be in as many films as humanly possible.  He’s currently filming Ender’s Game, he’s set to play the villain in Iron Man 3 which begins shooting next month, he’ll film the crime thriller Cut Bank this fall, and he recently signed on to star in the indie sci-fi comedy Convention.  Now comes word that Kingsley will star alongside Stellan Skarsgard, Tom Payne (Luck), and Olivier Martinez (S.W.A.T.) in the medieval period drama The Physician.  The film is based on Noah Gordon’s novel and centers on a healer traveling across Europe in the 11th century.

Payne will take the lead role of Rob Cole, a physician searching for “the scientific truth of illness and healing in a medieval world dominated by religion and superstition.”  Kingsley will play the so-called “doctor of all doctors” while Skarsgard will play Cole’s first mentor.  Hit the jump for more, including a synopsis for the book.

THE AVENGERS Review

Nothing like The Avengers has ever been attempted in Hollywood history.  No major motion picture has ever been the culmination of four different blockbuster franchises, each with its own protagonist, and crossing them over into one gigantic film.  It’s bigger than a sequel or even a planned trilogy.  Marvel had to take pieces from their previous superhero films to assemble The Avengers.  The studio wedged set-up into Iron Man 2, wove the covert government agency S.H.I.E.L.D. into Thor, and tacked bookends to Captain America: The First Avenger.  The plan for The Avengers was audacious to the point of near-hubris, but writer-director Joss Whedon has managed to deliver an absolute powerhouse of a payoff that’s truly worthy of Marvel’s astonishing ambition.

We’ve got a smattering of casting news to throw your way this morning.  First up, Stellan Skarsgard and Hiroyuki Sanada (the upcoming action flick 47 Ronin) have joined the Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) in Jonathan Teplitzy‘s drama The Railway Man.  Firth plays real-life World War II British officer Eric Lomax, who was captured and tortured by the Japanese.  Decades later, he’s persuaded by his wife (Kidman) to find and confront one of his captors in order to repair the psychological damage.  Irvine plays the younger Lomax who was in the war.  According to Variety, “Skarsgard will play the best friend who accompanies the older Lomax (Firth) back to the scene of his torture. Sanada plays a Japanese officer from the prison camp whom Lomax tracks down.”  This is turning out to be a terrific cast, and judging by the synopsis, this could be a big role for Sanada, whose previous credits include Speed Racer, Sunshine, and Lost.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Blu-ray Review

Even though the trilogy had already been made into films (with many of those film’s cast members moving on to American roles), The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was such an international phenomenon that the notion that people don’t like reading subtitles allowed for an American version. To make it into a big prestige project, director David Fincher and writer Steve Zaillian were brought in to adapt the successful novel for the big screen. Here Lisbeth Salander is played by Rooney Mara – who got an Oscar nomination for her work – and Mikael Blomkvist is played by Daniel Craig. Their characters investigate the Vanger family at the insistence of Henrik (Christopher Plummer), because he thinks someone in the family killed his niece. Our review of the Blu-ray of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo follows after the jump.

For some people, the wait to see The Avengers assemble will end a month earlier than expected. Marvel has set the world premiere date for the penultimate comic book movie for Wednesday, April 11th at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. Heat Vision reports that the red carpet will feature the following cast members before attending the 7:00 pm screening: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgård and Samuel L. Jackson. What, no love for Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson? It seems even the employees of S.H.I.E.L.D. will have to wait to see The Avengers with the rest of us when it opens to a wide release on May 4th. Hit the jump for the synopsis and latest trailer.

New Trailer for THE AVENGERS

A new trailer for The Avengers has gone online, and after seeing it, now I’m excited for the flick.  The big set piece seems to mainly be set around the alien attack on the city, but I love the size of it.  This doesn’t need to Transformers.  I’d rather have the slow, character-driven build to one spectacular action scene rather than an onslaught of action featuring people I don’t know and care about.  I like everything I saw in this trailer–the dialogue, the character relationships, the glimpses of the action–and now the film’s release date seems much further away.

Hit the jump to check out the  trailer.  The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgård, and Samuel L. Jackson. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4th.

International Trailer for THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

The international trailer for David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been released. It’s essentially a shorter version of the great four-minute trailer that hit the web a couple weeks ago. There are a couple of new glimpses here, but all in all it’s pretty much more of the same (which is definitely not a bad thing). I’m loving the marketing campaign for the film thus far. The teaser trailer was spectacular, stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara were featured in rather dark photo spread for Empire recently, and just today a video was released that chronicled the creation of a metal poster for the film set against Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ chilling score.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Stellan Skarsgård, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer, and Joely Richardson. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens December 21.

New Four-Minute Trailer for THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Sony has released a new trailer for David Fincher’s adaptation of the popular Stieg Larsson novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  The film stars Rooney Mara stars as Lisbeth Salander, a young hacker with a dark secret who investigates the Vanger family with disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig).  The new trailer is almost four minutes long and goes in depth explaining the plot and introducing the characters.  However, it doesn’t have the kick of the teaser trailer and it doesn’t change my feeling that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is weak source material.  The only thing that’s really keeping me hooked is Fincher.  I like the look of the film and I’m interested to see how Mara will take on such a popular character, but I continue to wonder if Fincher and screenwriter Steven Zaillian have found a way to make the story compelling.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and click here to read the description of the eight-minute version. The film also stars Stellan Skarsgård, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer, and Joely Richardson. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens December 21.

Lars Von Trier Wants NYMPHOMANIAC to Star Stellan Skarsgard; Gary Oldman Wants Colin Firth for Next Directorial Effort

Normally I don’t care much for “Wants” stories unless they give some hint as to the tone of a particular production.  Wish lists are easy to make and they give zero indication to any concrete deal.  But it’s Labor Day, news is almost non-existence, and we have to feed the content beast, so here’s two “Wants” stories.  First up, E! News reports that Lars Von Trier wants his next film, the “sexually graphic” Nymphomaniac to star the prolific Stellan Skarsgard (most recently seen in Thor and latest this year in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).  Skarsgard tells E! “Lars called me and said, ‘Stellan, my next film will be a porno film, and I want you to play the lead in it,’” he said, laughing. “But then he said, ‘You will not get to fuck.’”  The film reportedly centers on “the erotic life of a woman from the age of zero to the age of 50,” so I’m not sure how Skarsgard figures in.  Then again, with Von Trier it’s almost impossible to know what to expect beyond a vague outline.

Hit the jump for news regarding Gary Oldman’s next directorial feature.

UK Trailer for MELANCHOLIA

The UK trailer for Lars von Trier’s upcoming sci-fi/disaster drama Melancholia has landed online. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgård and Kiefer Sutherland, the film features Justine (Dunst) and Michael’s (Skarsgård) wedding taking place against the backdrop of impending doom. I can’t claim to be a huge fan of von Trier’s previous work, but everything I’ve seen from Melancholia has intrigued me. It looks beautifully tragic and, for whatever reason, kind of nostalgic to the point that I can’t wait to see it.

Check out the UK trailer after the jump. Click here to watch the first trailer from the film. Melancholia will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month as well as the New York Film Festival and Fantastic Fest. It hits UK theaters on October 30th before getting a VOD release in the United States on October 7th. It will receive a limited theatrical release in the U.S. beginning on November 11th.
