Television’s Homeland star Damian Lewis has been cast in the adaptation of Romeo and Juliet directed by Carlo Carlei (The Flight of the Innocent). Production is currently underway in Italy, with Paul Giamatti recently joining as Friar Lawrence and with Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth playing the star-crossed lovers. Lewis has been cast as Lord Capulet in the strict adaptation written by Oscar-winner Julian Fellowes of Gosford Park and Downton Abbey fame. The film, aimed at drawing in a younger audience, also stars Ed Westwick as Tybalt and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Benvolio. Hit the jump to see who else has recently joined the cast of Romeo and Juliet.

The international trailer for David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been released. It’s essentially a shorter version of the great four-minute trailer that hit the web a couple weeks ago. There are a couple of new glimpses here, but all in all it’s pretty much more of the same (which is definitely not a bad thing). I’m loving the marketing campaign for the film thus far. The teaser trailer was spectacular, stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara were featured in rather dark photo spread for Empire recently, and just today a video was released that chronicled the creation of a metal poster for the film set against Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ chilling score.

Sony has released a new trailer for David Fincher’s adaptation of the popular Stieg Larsson novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The film stars Rooney Mara stars as Lisbeth Salander, a young hacker with a dark secret who investigates the Vanger family with disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig). The new trailer is almost four minutes long and goes in depth explaining the plot and introducing the characters. However, it doesn’t have the kick of the teaser trailer and it doesn’t change my feeling that The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is weak source material. The only thing that’s really keeping me hooked is Fincher. I like the look of the film and I’m interested to see how Mara will take on such a popular character, but I continue to wonder if Fincher and screenwriter Steven Zaillian have found a way to make the story compelling.

Normally I don’t care much for “Wants” stories unless they give some hint as to the tone of a particular production. Wish lists are easy to make and they give zero indication to any concrete deal. But it’s Labor Day, news is almost non-existence, and we have to feed the content beast, so here’s two “Wants” stories. First up, E! News reports that Lars Von Trier wants his next film, the “sexually graphic” Nymphomaniac to star the prolific Stellan Skarsgard (most recently seen in Thor and latest this year in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Skarsgard tells E! “Lars called me and said, ‘Stellan, my next film will be a porno film, and I want you to play the lead in it,’” he said, laughing. “But then he said, ‘You will not get to fuck.’” The film reportedly centers on “the erotic life of a woman from the age of zero to the age of 50,” so I’m not sure how Skarsgard figures in. Then again, with Von Trier it’s almost impossible to know what to expect beyond a vague outline.

The UK trailer for Lars von Trier’s upcoming sci-fi/disaster drama Melancholia has landed online. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgård and Kiefer Sutherland, the film features Justine (Dunst) and Michael’s (Skarsgård) wedding taking place against the backdrop of impending doom. I can’t claim to be a huge fan of von Trier’s previous work, but everything I’ve seen from Melancholia has intrigued me. It looks beautifully tragic and, for whatever reason, kind of nostalgic to the point that I can’t wait to see it.
Check out the UK trailer after the jump. Click here to watch the first trailer from the film. Melancholia will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month as well as the New York Film Festival and Fantastic Fest. It hits UK theaters on October 30th before getting a VOD release in the United States on October 7th. It will receive a limited theatrical release in the U.S. beginning on November 11th.

Perhaps sensing that I have neither read the book or watched the original, Sony Pictures has released 18 character images and biographies to help myself and those like me get acquainted with David Fincher’s upcoming adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Starring Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Robin Wright, and Joley Richardson, the pic centers on Lisbeth Salander’s (Mara) investigation into the Vanger family alongside journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig).
Check out each of the character images and biographies after the jump. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo hits theaters later this year on December 21st.

Sony has released the first official trailer for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, following a (purportedly) leaked red-band trailer that hit the web over the weekend. David Fincher directs this adaptation of the popular book by Stieg Larsson. Rooney Mara stars as Lisbeth Salander, the young heroine who investigates the Vanger family with journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig). Stellan Skarsgård, Robin Wright, Christopher Plummer, and Joley Richardson also star. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo opens December 21. Watch the trailer after the jump.

The red-band trailer for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the David Fincher-directed adaptation of the popular book by Stieg Larsson, has leaked. The teaser is absolutely fantastic, with a version of “Immigrant Song” by Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Trent Reznor pulsing over cut-scenes from the film. Seriously, this teaser is phenomenal. The official version of the trailer is set to debut next week, so check this one out while it’s still up.

It appears that we have unknowingly gotten our first glimpse at director Joss Whedon’s take on The Avengers. Stellan Skarsgard, who starred in Thor and is set to reprise his character in Marvel’s mega-superhero flick The Avengers, has revealed that the post-credits sequence for Thor wasn’t directed by Kenneth Branagh but was actually helmed by Whedon himself. In lieu of spoiling the sequence for people that have yet to see the film, hit the jump for more.

Marvel’s Thor is the toughest of the lead Avengers to bring to the big screen. He’s a cross between a space alien and a Norse god, he wields a hammer named Mjolnir instead of standard superhero weapons like guns or swords, and he wears a cape. The character could fall so easily into camp territory, but director Kenneth Branagh takes the bold approach of playing the character completely straight but still keeps the movie fun and light. This balance of broad comedy and bombastic action mixed with straight-faced drama comes from the perfect combination of lead actors Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston. While the film does have some problems in developing the supporting characters, its biggest sin is in the 3D post-conversion which turns the bright shining lights of Asgard into a dim, blurry mess. But if you catch the film in 2D, Thor is going to be some of the most fun you have in a theater this year.

With Thor finally arriving in America next weekend (it’s already playing around the world), Paramount/Marvel have released the EPK and included are four clips and ten minutes of behind the scenes footage. While the clips have all been previously released, this is the first time we have all four in one place. In addition, if you’re curious what it’s really like on a movie set, the behind the scenes footage is great to watch. However, if you are trying to avoid spoilers, you might want to check it out after you’ve seen the movie.
As I said when I posted my review/video blog on Thor, I thought the movie was great. Also, while Thor is not an easy transition from comic books to movie screens, director Kenneth Branagh made it work and I cannot wait to see everyone together in The Avengers next summer. Hit the jump to watch the clips and look for new interviews next week. Thor stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Josh Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba, Clark Gregg and Colm Feore.

Yesterday, Joss Whedon announced the commencement of filming on The Avengers but it was in his causal, Whedon-y way. Today, Marvel sent out a press release announcing the start of shooting. The press release has fewer jokes than Whedon’s announcement, but it also has more confirmations. The press release confirms that Tom Hiddleston will return as Loki and that he’ll be joined by Thor co-star Stellan Skarsgård who plays Professor Erik Selvig.
Hit the jump to check out the press release along with the first official set photo. The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, and Samuel L. Jackson. The Avengers opens in 3D on May 4, 2012.

Marvel has released some more new images from Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. Among the new images we have a good look at Rene Russo as Frigga as well as a nice photo of the Warriors Three (Tadanobu Asano, Josh Dallas, and Ray Stevenson).
Hit the jump to check out the new images. Thor stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Idris Elba, Clark Gregg, and Colm Feore. It opens in 3D on May 6th.

With the film set to hit theaters on May 6th, Paramount has released a number of new images from Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. Thor stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Josh Dallas, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba, Clark Gregg and Colm Feore.

Yesterday, Marvel released a clip from Thor giving us a very brief glimpse at Hawkeye. Today, another clip has been released.
