Step Up Revolution, the fourth installment of the wildly popular Step Up dance franchise, is now available on 3D Blu-ray and DVD.  With themes of love, injustice, hope and family, this time the story is set in Miami and features a cast that stages cutting-edge flash mobs meant to really the locals to protest against planned commercial development that would destroy their homes and businesses.  The film stars Ryan Guzman, Kathryn McCormick, Misha Gabriel, Stephen “tWitch” Boss and Peter Gallagher.

During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, Adam Shankman – who produces the Step Up films with his sister, Jennifer Gibgot – talked about the over two hours of exclusive and behind-the-scenes bonus features, why the Step Up films have been so successful, how it’s more difficult to teach actors to dance than it is to teach dancers to act, the challenge of finding directors for each film who have their own passion and enthusiasm for the art of dance, and that it’s likely there will continue to be more films in the franchise.  He also talked about what fans can expect from the Glee Christmas episode he directed (in which he says Kurt and Blaine will sing together and share a lovely moment), what led him to part ways with This is Where I Leave You which he was scheduled to direct, that he hasn’t locked down his next project yet, and why he’s totally addicted to directing.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Reports that audiences were afraid to see The Dark Knight Rises on the weekend after the Aurora tragedy turned out to be not so true. Yes, the film had a steeper than usual drop on Friday but then rebounded nicely; taking first place with an estimated $64 million. It must have been the week’s two new releases that people were ‘hesitant’ to see. Neither The Watch nor Step Up Revolution made it out of the low teens on their opening frame.

With The Expendables 2 hitting theaters this summer, a fourth installment of Step Up arriving in July and a sequel to Red in development, Lionsgate is pretty well set for film franchises. But now it sounds like the studio might be looking to bring those properties to the small screen as well. Deadline has word from a meeting that CEO Jon Feltheimer had with Wall Street analyst this morning where he explicitly mentioned turning RED and Step Up into TV series, properties that come from the studio’s recent merger with Summit Entertainment. And while it wasn’t mentioned at this specific meeting, apparently The Expendables is also part of this endeavor to bring the films’ brand to TV. More after the jump.

Time to play catchup with a couple of release dates that surfaced over the weekend.  First up, Summit will release Step Up 4 on August 10, 2012, possibly under the title Step Up 4Ever 3D—if we’re lucky.  The release date comes with a new synopsis.  In between the dancing: “Emily, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, arrives in Miami with aspirations of becoming a professional dancer, but soon falls in love with Sean, a young man who leads a dance crew in elaborate, cutting-edge flash mobs.”  Kathryn McCormick, Ryan Guzman, and Stephen Boss star.

Next, Box Office Mojo lists October 19, 2012 for the release of the feature directorial debut of The Sopranos creator David Chase.  The story revolves around a group of friends who form a band in the 1960s—the film was using the band name, Twylight Zones, as the working title.  It was never meant to last though, since that reads more sci-fi than period rock drama.  For the time being, the movie is untitled.  Given the pre-Halloween date, I do hold out some hope “Twylight Zones” will play an important role in the marketing.  John Magaro, Jack Huston, Will Brill, and James Gandolfini star; Steven Van Zandt served as music supervisor.
