Duh: Lionsgate Will Make More TWILIGHT If Stephanie Meyer Writes New Books; First Trailer for BREAKING DAWN – PART 2 Attached to THE HUNGER GAMES

In case you had any doubt that Lionsgate would make another Twilight movie past Breaking Dawn – Part 2 should author Stephanie Meyer decide to extend the series, Lionsgate exec Rob Friedman is here to alleviate your fears. Per THR, early this morning on a conference call Friedman said, “If [Meyer] wishes to do it, we’ll be there to support her.” While the move is a no-brainer, it actually holds a bit more clout than Warner Bros. saying they’d make another Harry Potter if J.K. Rowling wrote another book. Rowling has been pretty steadfast in her conclusion of the series, but Meyer has been a bit more open-ended when it comes to more Twilight entries; the author previously stated that she originally envisioned Twilight as a longer series. Happy Saturday, folks. I’m writing to you this week surrounded by a mountain of used facial tissue (that’s right, I’m not endorsing Kleenex on the site without some sort of kick back…wait, dang it). Cold season has officially set in which means I’m on a daily regimen of Dayquil (which I have no problem endorsing), warm tea, and self-pity. In case you’re a longtime reader of the “Top 5″ and you’re wondering to yourself, “Wasn’t Jason just complaining about the summer heat?”, the answer is yes. Out of the 52 yearly weeks, I’m generally not complaining about the weather for approximately 2 or 3 of them. It’s sad, I know.

In this week’s “Top 5″ you can find our video interviews with the cast of A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, press conferences with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and more from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 junket, the red band trailer for Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s  21 Jump Street, a sit-down with the great Albert Brooks, and our coverage to date of this year’s American Film Market. Find a brief recap and link to each after the jump.

Jerusha Hess, co-writer of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, is set to make her directorial debut with the indie romantic comedy Austenland. Starring Keri Russell, J.J. Field (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Conchords), Heat Vision reports that the film will also mark the producing debut of Twilight author Stephanie Meyer.

Based on the book by Shannon Hale, Austenland centers on a woman in her 30’s who is so obsessed with the Pride and Prejudice character Mr. Darcy that no real-life man can compare, and her love life pays the toll. She decides to spend her life savings on a trip to a Jane Austen-themed resort in England. The supporting cast includes Jennifer Coolidge, Jane Seymour, Rupert Vansittart and James Callis. Filming begins this week. Hit the jump to read a synopsis of the novel.

Per the press release, the film will begin principal photography in February 2012 and will shoot in Louisiana and New Mexico. Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) is attached to star in the pic which is set during a time in which Earth has been invaded by an unseen enemy that uses human bodies as “hosts.” Ronan will play Melanie, a young girl who refuses to give up possession of her mind to an “invading soul” named Wanderer.

Check out the official press release after the jump. Niccol’s sci-fi drama In Time stars Amanda Seyfried, Justin Timberlake, and Cillian Murphy. That pic is currently slated for a release later this year on October 28th.

Andrew Niccol Once Again Set to Direct THE HOST

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 12th, 2011 at 2:15 pm

Andrew Niccol (Gattaca) was once attached to write and direct the adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s novel The Host.  However, while Niccol completed the screenplay, he decided to make his next directorial feature the sci-fi flick Next (formerly titled I’M.Mortal, then titled Now, and according to Deadline, now titled “Next“).  But with shooting on Next completed, Niccol has now returned to The Host and will direct from his original screenplay.  As we previously reported, Saoirse Ronan has signed on to star as Melanie Stryder, a young freedom fighter in a post-apocalyptic Earth who’s implanted with an alien life form known as a “Soul”.  The “Soul” (named “Wanderer”) wants the location of the woman’s compatriots, but instead begins to become overwhelmed with Melanie’s memories and emotions and starts to connect with her host’s old life, including a romantic entanglement with Melanie’s boyfriend.  I’ll leave it for you to decide if that counts as cheating on the boyfriend’s part.

Niccol’s Next or Now or whatever-the-hell-it’s-called stars Amanda Seyfried, Justin Timberlake, and Cillian Murphy and is set to open on October 28th.  The Host is currently picking up financing at Cannes.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Saoirse Ronan to Star in Adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s THE HOST

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: May 3rd, 2011 at 11:11 am

Saoirse Ronan is one of the best young actors working today and she’s managed to give impressive performances regardless of whether she’s in a great film (Hanna) or an atrocious one (The Lovely Bones).  Here’s hoping that The Host is the former because Deadline is reporting that Ronan has landed the lead role.  Based on the novel by Twilight author Stephanie Meyer, The Host is about an alien species called “Souls” that latch on to human hosts, destroy their consciousness, and erase their personalities.  Ronan would play Melanie Stryder, one of the remaining free humans who is captured by the aliens and implanted with a Soul called “Wanderer”.  Wanderer intends to make Stryder give up the location of her cohorts, but instead becomes impressed by Melanie’s unwillingness to surrender her consciousness, and Wanderer becomes driven to connect the young woman to her former life.

Writer Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show) wrote the script and was set to direct before moving on to the sci-fi drama Now starring Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake.  But since that film is now mostly finished, it’s possible that Niccol may return to The Host.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN Filmmakers Respond to Image Leak

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 1st, 2011 at 1:52 pm

Images have been leaking from the set of Bill Condon’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.  Almost every major production has to deal with leaks.  Sometimes the filmmakers shrug and accept the leaks and hope that they’ll raise interest in the project.  Other times, a production (usually one that already has plenty of publicity and fan interest) goes into lockdown and attempts to get sites to remove said images.  Our policy at Collider is to run unofficial images, but we’ll always take them down at the request of the studio and/or filmmaker.

Condon, producer Wyck Godfrey, author Stephanie Meyer, and studio Summit Entertainment are pleading with sites to not show the leaked images from the upcoming film and for fans to stop passing these images around.  I don’t know if fans will acquise, but I for one am more than happy to not show anyone anything from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.  Hit the jump for a statement from the filmmakers.

Susanna White to Direct Film Adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s THE HOST

Susanna White (Nanny McPhee Returns) has been tapped to direct the adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s sci-fi novel The Host.  Per Variety, White will helm a script by Oscar-nominee Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show) with Nick Wechsler set to co-produce alongside Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz of Chockstone Pictures.  Briefly, Meyer’s novel takes place during a time when “altruistic parasites” (which I didn’t know existed) have inhabited the bodies of most humans – one exception being the female protagonist Melanie Stryder.

Although McPhee was White’s feature debut, the UK native has a solid directorial track record having been nominated for two Primetime Emmy’s for helming an episode of HBO’s Generation Kill and PBS’ 2006 Jane Eyre mini-series.  While I can’t say that Meyer’s prior creative output has me over-the-top excited for The Host, Niccol’s presence behind the pen has me interested in the adaptation. For more on the project, hit the jump to check out a synopsis for Meyer’s novel.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE DVD and Blu-ray Info; Available December 4

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: October 28th, 2010 at 3:06 pm

Summit Entertainment has announced the DVD/Blu-ray details for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse DVD/Blu-ray. Scheduled for release on December 4 (perfectly timed for the holidays), the studio is shipping multiple versions including a Two-Disc Special Edition DVD, Single Disc Blu-ray, Single Disc DVD, and Blu-ray/DVD Combo.  Get all that?

While getting the movie is great, most fans just want to know what are the extras.  Summit has announced two different audio commentaries with Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, and author Stephanie Meyer and producer Wyck Godfrey; a 6-part “Making Of” documentary that takes you behind the scenes; deleted and extended scenes; a comprehensive photo gallery; music videos and more.  No idea what “more” means but I do know the fans will be very happy with the audio commentaries as Pattinson didn’t record one for the last movie.

Andrew Niccol’s Next Sci-Fi Flick I’M MORTAL Turns off Aging

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 12th, 2010 at 4:45 pm

slice_andrew_niccol_01.jpg

Writer-Director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca) is in negotiations with new Regency to pick up his new script I’m Mortal.  According to Heat Vision, the film, which Niccol will also direct, “is set in the not-too-distant future where the aging gene has been switched off. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency and the way people pay for luxuries and necessities. The rich can live forever, while the rest try to negotiate for their immortality.  The protagonist is a poor young man who comes into a fortune of time, though too late to help his mother from dying. He ends up on the run from a corrupt police force known as “time keepers.”  Because time is the commodity, parents in the film can end up looking as young as their children.

Hit the jump for my thoughts on the premise as well a refresher on Niccol’s other projects.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA – NEW MOON Review

The Twilight Saga: New Moon, like last year’s Twilight, is critic-proof.  We film critics don’t get it, this film isn’t for us, and the fans will love it.  However, none of that means New Moon isn’t worthy of humorous derision or concerned analysis of the disturbing subtext.  New Moon is a bad movie which fails on nearly every level, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fascinating.  The series is one of the most popular young adult stories of the last decade yet the movie, which wouldn’t dare make radical changes to the book, lacks so much: a strong female protagonist, subtlety, joy, a positive message to young women, and above all, shirts.  The men of New Moon need shirts.

Fun fact: Stephanie Meyer, author of novel/film sensation “Twilight,” has actually written a book for adults! It’s called “The Host,” and has just been picked up by producers Nick Wechsler, Steve Schwartz, and Paula Mae Schwartz. Wechsler and the Schwartzes have worked together recently to produce the adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road.” More on the project, and who’s involved after the jump.
