A good Conan the Barbarian movie shouldn’t be that hard to make. The character is simple. He’s a buff, taciturn guy who caves in skulls and cuts his enemies in half with a gigantic sword. This is Conan. This is simple. And yet director Marcus Nispel has no idea what kind of Conan movie he wants to make. Is it a good, old-fashioned sword-and-sorcery flick? Is it a modern spin on the classic comic book? Is it a campy action movie? Is it a self-serious “realistic” drama? Perhaps a better movie could have melded all of these elements together, but Conan the Barbarian is an absolute mess, and even worse, an absolute bore.

As the new television season looms closer, the marketing machine is starting to pick up steam. A couple new posters promoting the return of The Good Wife and the premiere of Terra Nova have just debuted. One is pretty damn sexy implying some naughty behavior (though it really just seems like a way to get people’s attention, and the other has some photoshopped images in a jungle that look a little to clean cut. I’m pretty sure you can figure out which attributes belong to which piece of poster, but we’ll let you take a look yourself after the jump.

Face it. Having dinosaurs on television is an exciting proposition. With FOX bringing Terra Nova to network TV this September, many are curious to see if a show can live up to the ideas it puts forth. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park) and flying on the backs of stars Jason O’Mara (Life on Mars) and Stephen Lang (Avatar), the show has a high-concept and high-budget premise that may be a tough pill to swallow for mainstream audiences. Yesterday morning, Ballroom 20 played host to the first half of the two-hour pilot and a brief but lively Q&A with star Stephen Lang, executive producers Rene Echevarria (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Brannon Braga (24), co-executive producer Jose Molina (Castle), and more. For a brief review of the pilot and highlights from the panel, hit the jump.

The UK trailer for Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian reboot has been released. This new look at the film was apparently put together by someone with severe ADD, as you’re really not able to make out much of anything besides lots and lots of fighting and yelling. The previous trailer was kind of intriguing (save for the terrible, terrible music), but whether Nispel’s take is going to capture the cheesy fun of the original or squander in self-seriousness is still yet to be determined.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film stars Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Rose McGowan, Rachel Nichols and Stephen Lang. Conan the Barbarian opens in 3D on August 19th.

The red-band trailer for director Marcus Nispel’s (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot) remake of Conan the Barbarian has been released. It’s certainly epic-looking, and extremely bloody. I like Jason Momoa for the part, but after catching up on HBO’s Game of Thrones it’s really hard to look at him in a medieval/carnal context without thinking of Khal Drogo. If he rips someone’s throat out in Conan, then my ticket is 100% sold.
The tone Nispel is going for with the film works, but the music in this trailer is horrible. I first thought it was some cheesy 80’s action-movie song, then the vocals came in. It just reeks of douchebaginess. Nevertheless, the actual film looks pretty cool. The film stars Momoa, Ron Perlman, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan, and Rachel Nichols, Conan the Barbarian hits theaters August 19th in 3D.

Five character posters for Marcus Nispel’s Conan the Barbarian have been released across five different websites. The posters show Conan (Jason Momoa), his father Corin (Ron Perlman), magician Marique (Rose McGowan), the Queen’s bodyguard Tamara (Rachel Nichols), and the film’s villain Khalar Zym (Stephen Lang).

[Update: We've been sent the high resolution versions of the character posters, and have included them after the jump]

The theatrical trailer for the Conan the Barbarian reboot has gone online. The film stars Jason Momoa as Conan, with Ron Perlman, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan, and Rachel Nichols rounding out the cast. While the teaser didn’t really show much footage, we really get a sense of what the flick will be like from this trailer. The action actually looks pretty cool, and I’m liking the giant scale and scope of the flick that we’re seeing. Momoa certainly looks the part, and I’m definitely intrigued to see more. Directed by Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot), the film is set to be released on August 19th in 3D. Hit the jump to check out the trailer.

Take some of Avatar, mix with Jurassic Park and toss in a little bit of Lost for good measure, and that’s about what Fox’s new series Terra Nova looks like. We got our first glimpse at this new series back in February, but Fox has just released a new trailer that gives us a better idea of the size and scope of the story. Showing us both the world our characters leave behind and the new world where humanity hopes to start with a clean slate. Despite the more gritty, thrilling and dramatic tone of the series, I can’t help but also see a comparison to Land of the Lost. Hopefully there won’t be any Sleestaks showing up. The series was supposed to have a sneak preview premiere event in May, but that’s since been delayed until sometime this fall. In the meantime, check out the new trailer and the official series synopsis after the jump.

At WonderCon, Fox unveiled a 3 minute sizzle reel from their upcoming time travel and dinosaur filled TV series Terra Nova. While the show has been delayed until the fall, after watching the footage, I understand why. Not only does the show take place 85 million years in the past, it also takes place a hundred years in the future. Nothing is present day. It’s without a doubt one of the most ambitious ideas for network television to ever be greenlit and I couldn’t be more excited. For all our previous coverage on Terra Nova including trailers and images, click here.
Before the panel, I got to talk with Stephen Lang. We discussed who he plays, why he wanted to get involved in the project, when do they start to film again, how did Avatar help him with this role, has he seen Conan, and reveals Terra Nova will have a 9 day shooting schedule (which is huge for a TV show). Hit the jump to watch.

You’ve already seen all the big Super Bowl spots for some of the most anticipated films of the year, but now we have the first footage from one of the most high profile series heading to TV in the fall. Tonight Fox finally premiere the first footage from Terra Nova, the new sci-fi series that will have a sneak preview in May and a full fledged season premiere in the fall. With Stephen Lang’s monologue and the looks of the sets, this almost feels like a TV series based on Avatar. Of course, then there’s a shot of a dinosaur so that perception goes right out the window. It’s hard to form any real opinion just on this footage alone, but I’m definitely curious to see how this turns out. See the footage after the jump along with an extended series description.

The new Fox television series Terra Nova is an epic family adventure that, as part of an experiment to save the human race, follows an ordinary family on an incredibly journey back in time to prehistoric Earth. In the year 2149, the world is dying and the planet is overdeveloped and overcrowded, with the majority of plant and animal life extinct. The only hope for the future survival of mankind is in the distant past, so when scientists unexpectedly discover a fracture in time, they construct a portal into primeval history and attempt to resettle humanity in the past, for a second chance at rebuilding civilization.
During the Fox Television portion of the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, show star Stephen Lang talked about playing Commander Nathanial Taylor, the charismatic and heroic first pioneer and leader of the settlement, how he’s a flawed man with righteous intentions and working with all of the special effects. He also talked about his experience as the very evil Khalar Zym in Conan The Barbarian (due out in theaters on August 19th) and the impact of Avatar on his life. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

We just got our first look at Steven Spielberg’s Terra Nova when some photos from the pilot surfaced last week. Now we have high-resolutions versions of those photos along with some new pictures which include much better-looking series logo (above), our first look at Avatar star Stephen Lang as Commander Nathaniel Taylor, and some great promo images featuring the entire cast. Looking at the sheer scale of this series and the story, this could either be a mind-blowing piece of television or one colossal failure. I’m hoping for the former. We’ll find out in May since Fox just announced the premiere dates for the two-night sneak preview event. Check out all the photos after the jump.

Avatar is the most successful film of all time. So it should be no surprise that people went crazy for it. Like really crazy, like becoming suicidal over Pandora not existing crazy. The story of how Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) went to Pandora as a crippled marine, and became a Na’vi (a twelve-foot tall blue catlike creature), then a leader and warrior got to the core of some people, possibly because of how director James Cameron approached his 3-D world. Though the extended collector’s edition does not include the 3-D version of the film, it does have three cuts of the movie, and two disc chocked full of supplements. My review of the Avatar Extended Collector’s edition Blu-ray comes after the jump.
Back in February, IESB reported that Lionsgate’s Conan the Barbarian reboot would be released in 3D. While never confirmed by the studio, thanks to Collider reader Max, we have our first look at the promo poster for Conan 3D. If you saw the previous promo poster for Conan, the new poster is exactly the same except it now has the cast listed and the word 3D below Conan.
While I’m a fan of movies that have been filmed in 3D, I’ve been extremely let down by everything I’ve seen that’s been post converted. I cite Clash of the Titans, Alice in Wonderland, and The Last Airbender as examples of bad post conversion. Obviously as time goes on, post conversion should get better and I’ll be less critical of a film going 3D in post. But so far…nothing I’ve seen tells me we should be excited to watch Conan in 3D. Saying that, the one constant I hear about good post conversion is that it takes time. With no release date for Conan, perhaps they’ll do it right and surprise us all.
Conan stars Jason Momoa, Rose McGowan, Ron Perlman, Rachel Nichols, and Stephen Lang. It’s slated to open in 2011. For more coverage on Marcus Nispel’s Conan, click here.

Actor Stephen Lang had an excellent 2009 with Avatar, Public Enemies, and The Men Who Stare at Goats. In 2010 it’s paying off as earlier this year he landed the role of the villain in Conan and now he’s set to star opposite Jason O’Mara (the US version of Life on Mars) in Fox’s upcoming sci-fi series Terra Nova. The series is about a group of humans from 2149 who try to butterfly-effect up the joint by going back in time 85 million years and starting civilization anew. According to Deadline, Lang will play the “charismatic and ruthless leader of the Terra Nova settlement.” A “charismatic and ruthless leader?” I’m sure the hundreds of millions of people who saw Avatar will attest that he can pull that off.
Terra Nova is being produced by Steven Spielberg. Unfortunately, the series is still a long ways off and we won’t see a sneak peak until May 2011.
