The first trailer for the apocalyptic dramedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World has landed. The film stars Steve Carell as a man who sets out with a woman (Keira Knightley) to search for his high-school sweetheart during Earth’s final days. It’s a premise you’d expect from a big budget sci-fi pic or a zany road trip comedy, but the tone on display in this trailer is nothing short of fantastic. Director Lorene Scafaria has populated the flick with a brilliant ensemble, as we see Patton Oswalt, Rob Heubel, Connie Britton, Gillian Jacobs, Rob Corddry, and more pop up in this short trailer alone. There are genuinely funny moments, but an underlying sadness permeates throughout that hints at some strong character work as well. I love the way the apocalypse is tackled here and can’t wait to see more.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Adam Brody, Derek Luke, Melanie Lynskey, T.J. Miller, and Melinda Dillon. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World opens June 22nd.

Jim Carrey Looks Familiar in BURT WONDERSTONE Set Photos

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 14th, 2012 at 1:41 pm

The dueling magician comedy Burt Wonderstone is currently filming in the magical land of mysticism that is Las Vegas, and some set photos from the pic have started to surface. Just the other day we brought you images that gave us our first look at stars Steve Carell, Olivia Wilde, and Steve Buscemi, and now we’ve got a glimpse of Jim Carrey’s very douchey-looking magician character. Carell stars as the titular Vegas magician who loses his partner and then has to compete with a hipper magician (Carrey). In the previous set photos, Carell’s character looked to be channeling David Blaine in a dangerous-looking trick. These images of Carrey evoke another popular mainstream “magician”: Criss Angel.

While the premise could easily be turned into a lame, cheap joke comedy, the cast involved here compounded with the ridiculous-looking set photos have me hopeful that we’re in for a really good time once Burt Wonderstone opens. Don Scardino (30 Rock) is directing, and Burt Wonderstone is set for release sometime in 2013. Hit the jump to see the set photos.

First Look at Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, and Olivia Wilde in BURT WONDERSTONE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: January 11th, 2012 at 8:56 am

Filming is currently underway on the comedy Burt Wonderstone starring Steve Carell, Jim Carrey, Steve Buscemi, Jay Mohr, James Gandolfini, and Olivia Wilde.  The story centers on a Las Vegas magician (Carell) who loses his partner and is then upstaged by a hipper magician (Carrey) doing dangerous and crowd-drawing tricks.  The first set photos from the movie show Carell’s eponymous character apparently trying to upstage his rival by aping David Blaine‘s boring non-magic.  The costumes and make-up look very “Vegas” and perhaps Wonderstone will actually try to escape from his predicament rather than sit there with people gazing up at what Chris Rock called “a trickless magician.”

Hit the jump to check out the set photos.  Burt Wonderstone is due out in 2013.

CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. Blu-ray Review

Crazy, Stupid, Love. was directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, best known for having written Bad Santa. They wrote and directed I Love You, Phillip Morris and it seemed of their sensibilities, but with this film they seem to be making a bid to work in the studio system by directing Dan Fogelman‘s script – who’s best known for kids films. The film stars Steve Carell as a man going through a divorce and gets dating advice from Ryan Gosling on how to close a deal. But Carell is still in love with his wife, Julianne Moore, and Gosling connects with Emma Stone, which throws a monkey wrench into their bar scene days. Our review of Crazy, Stupid, Love. on Blu-ray follows after the jump.

Steve Carell to Star in LUNATICS Based on Novel by Dave Barry and Alan Zweibel

by Dave Trumbore    Posted: November 10th, 2011 at 7:16 pm

What do you get when you take two prize-winning humorists and add in one of Hollywood’s leading comedic actors? Apparently, you get Lunatics, the Universal Pictures adaptation of the Dave Barry and Alan Zweibel novel of the same name. Steve Carell will star as one of two soccer dads whose conflict with each other grows into a series of escalating events until both of them are sent running for their lives.

Barry, the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, is most famous for his long-running syndicated humor column in The Miami Herald. Zweibel is an Emmy-winning writer behind such TV series as Saturday Night Live and Late Show with David Letterman. Carell, of course, is one of the most sought after actors today, having left The Office to pursue his lucrative movie career. Hit the jump for more on Lunatics.

ONCE Director John Carney to Direct Steve Carell in DOGS OF BABEL

John Carney‘s Once is a gem that has continued to grow a devoted audience since the film’s release in 2006.  It’s a movie that gets better every time I see it and Carney wisely lets his actors/musicians take center stage rather than overwhelm the intimate story with his direction.  Carney has directed two more European films since Once, and 24 Frames reports that he’ll be making his stateside debut for the dramedy Dogs of Babel.  As we reported back in February, Steve Carell is set to play a linguistics professor who finds his wife dead in their backyard.  Grief-stricken by his wife’s death and unable to accept the police’s ruling that it was an accident, the professor tries to teach their dog to speak in order to discover the truth.  With Once, Carney showed he could blend the comic and the melancholy to beautiful effect and he seems like a wise choice for this film.

It’s difficult to tell when Dogs of Babel will fall into Carell’s busy schedule.  However, getting a director on board is a good sign that it could shoot next year.  Carney recently wrapped filming on the supernatural drama The Rafters.  Carell will be seen in theaters next year in the apocalyptic rom-com Seeking a Friend at the End of the World and alongside Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones in Great Hope Springs.

Steve Carell to Produce and Star in Heist Film CONVICTION

Steve Carell is certainly keeping himself busy after leaving NBC’s The Office. Deadline reports that the actor is now attached to produce and star in the heist film Conviction. The script, which landed on the Black List, was written by Jonathan Herman and centers on an imprisoned master bank robber who is forced by the FBI to entrap his protégé who is planning a multimillion dollar job. Warner Bros. picked up the project two years ago and was developing it as a drama in the vein of Heat, but it stalled. The film will now be reworked as an action comedy more along the lines of 48 Hours and Ocean’s Eleven. Carell is producing alongside Joel Silver.

The Office actor is involved in a number of developing projects at the moment. He’ll next shoot the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone with Jim Carrey, he’s in talks to star in Charlie Kaufman’s next pic Frank or Francis alongside Nicolas Cage and Jack Black, and he’s also set for a darkly dramatic turn in Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher, based on the true story of paranoid schizophrenic John du Pont.

THE OFFICE Season 7 DVD Review

the-office-season-seven-slice

In the seventh season of The Office, the writers of the long-running NBC comedy series had two big tasks ahead of them. First, the staff had to deal with the impending exit of manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell) which included giving him a worthy exit and finding him a strong replacement, but also proving that the show would be able to survive without the presence of Carell on-screen. Sadly, this season proved to be one of the weakest, and seems to be proof that the series, just like its former star, might be on the way out. However, the seventh season of The Office still contains some truly great episodes, genuinely touching moments, and one marathon of a fantastic performance from Steve Carell (who should’ve won the Emmy over Jim Parsons last month). For more of my impressions of the DVD release of the seventh season of The Office, hit the jump.

Steve Carell Set as Lead in Bennett Miller’s John du Pont Film FOXCATCHER

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: September 29th, 2011 at 7:13 pm

Steve Carell is going dark, folks. The actor has been set as the lead in Moneyball director Bennett Miller’s long-in-the-works true crime pic Foxcatcher, per Variety. The film tells the true story of John du Pont, a paranoid schizophrenic who built a wrestling training facility on his 800-acre Pennsylvania estate where he subsequently shot and killed Olmypic gold medal-winning wrestler David Schultz in 1996. Heir to his family’s chemical fortune, du Pont locked himself in his mansion for two days after murdering his friend, and spent the time on the phone with negotiators. The authorities were finally able to lure the man out of his house when they shut off his power and heat. E. Max Frye (Band of Brothers) and Dan Futterman, who penned Miller’s debut feature Capote, wrote the script.

Miller is no stranger to the true crime genre, as he expertly captured Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood research in 2005’s Capote. His latest effort, Moneyball, is one flat-out fantastic and I can’t wait to see what he brings to the decidedly strange du Pont story. As for Carell, his comedic talent is undeniable but he’s rarely gotten the chance to delve into drama. He showed promise in Dan in Real Life and Crazy, Stupid, Love., but Foxcatcher is a whole new league of dark. He’s an inspired choice, and I’m eager to see what he and Miller cook up. Production is set to begin in March.

CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. Directors Re-Teaming with Steve Carell for New Film

Crazy, Stupid, Love. directors Glenn Ficarra & John Requa are planning to re-team with Steve Carell for a new untitled film.  The I Love You Phillip Morris writer-directors tell Moviehole, “We’re working on something with Steve also, that he’s producing. He’s not starring but it’s based on the idea he had. We wrote the script already. It’s one of these three friends from college, but now they’re in their 40s, movies. They’re going on a European backpacking trip that that they never did. And it’s filled with all this middle-aged fun.”  However, Ficarra adds, that the script “doesn’t have a happy ending.”

It’s not too surprising that Carell wouldn’t be attached to star (although that could certainly change if he so chooses) since he has so many other projects on his plate.  His next three films are Seeking a Friend at the End of the World with Keira Knightley, Great Hope Springs with Meryl Streep, and the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone.  He’s also reportedly attached to Mail-Order Groom with Tina Fey, Get Smart 2 (which he also wrote), Raised by Wolfs, The Abstinence Teacher, A Boyfriend for My Wife, Of All the Things, and Dogs of Babel.

This time last week, I was writing about how happy I was to be in San Diego, 2,000 miles away from the godless heat of the Midwest. Fast-forward to the present, and I’m happy to report that things back home have really cooled off with a heat index hovering right around a brisk 108 degrees Fahrenheit. At this rate, I should be able to check my mail without fear of sweating through my clothes any day now (baby steps, people, baby steps). Because I truly care about our readers, I’m hoping that wherever you’re reading this from is cool, comfortable, and free of any sort of sweating. Now, onto the important stuff…

In this week’s “Top 5″ installment we have an abundance of coverage for The Avengers, a video interview with the iconic Patrick Stewart, the first look at Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, the first trailer for director Peter Berg’s adaptation of Hasbro’s Battleship, and Matt’s cast interviews and review of Crazy, Stupid, Love.. Steve Carell Interview CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE.

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 28th, 2011 at 4:41 pm

Crazy, Stupid, Love. has plenty of great performances.  Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and Julianne Moore all do terrific work but the movie truly belongs to Steve Carell.  As Cal Weaver, he’s finds the balance of sadness and silliness in the role where a middle-aged guy can recognize the despair of being divorced and cheated on but also the strangeness of having to reinvent himself in order to move on with his life.  Additionally, Carell once again shows that he has comic delivery that’s second to none.

During a roundtable interview at the press junket for the film, we spoke to Carell about what he found appealing in the script, what the movie has to say about modern masculinity, getting slapped by Ryan Gosling [Corrected: I know I originally wrote Ryan Reynolds.  My bad.], and much more.  Hit the jump to check out the interview.  Crazy, Stupid, Love. opens tomorrow.

CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE. Review

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: July 28th, 2011 at 3:20 pm

Would you ever take the advice of your thirteen-year-old self?  Would you look back to your days as a batch of hormones and angst and say, “I was so wise back then.  What happened?”  Crazy, Stupid, Love. takes an “out of the mouths of babes” approach to serious romantic relationships and as a result an honest but funny relationship dramedy gets a saccharine sheen that completely overwhelms the film in the final act.  Ultimately, great performances and cute humor can’t withstand the stalkerish affections of an 8th grader.

Ryan Gosling Interview CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE.

Earlier this month I got to head up to New York to do the press junket for the upcoming romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. The film follows three different romantic relationships and how they intersect with one another.  One of the film’s funniest relationships is between despondent cuckold Cal (Steve Carell) and the benevolent pick-up artist Jacob (Ryan Gosling) who decides to give Cal a makeover and help him get his mojo back.  The movie is a rare outright comic performance from Gosling and he has wonderful chemistry with Carell.

During the roundtable interview with Gosling, we asked him about making the shift to comedy, his upcoming projects Logan’s Run and The Place Beyond the Pines, his four-legged soulmate, and much more.  Hit the jump to check out the interview.  Crazy, Stupid, Love. opens this Friday.
