The first teaser trailers for director Adam McKay‘s Anchorman 2 has gone online. While I love reporting on movie news, I can’t help but be a little jealous of Anchorman fans who will walk into The Dictator, and had no idea that Anchorman 2 was on the way (I’m working off the assumption these fans also missed Ron Burgundy’s announcement on Conan). We don’t know what the plot of the sequel will be (it might involve the dawn of the 24-hour news cycle and diversity), but it will most likely contain more of the brilliant one-liners you heard in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and the ones you’ll hear in this trailer. We’ve also included an exclusive teaser trailer from FunnyOrDie, which contains different dialogue.

A couple of heavy hitters in casting news today. Here are the headlines at a glance:

If you’re a fan of Adam McKay‘s Anchorman, the last few months have been amazing. Not only did Paramount suddenly greenlight the sequel after everyone involved thought it was dead, but the studio got McKay and the entire Channel 4 news team (sans Christina Applegate) to shoot a teaser trailer that will be attached to prints of The Dictator!
But it gets better.
In addition to the teaser trailer that should be online soon, Paramount has just released the first poster and it looks like the official title is Anchorman: The Legend Continues. Hit the jump for more.

Though Anchorman 2 doesn’t begin production until next February, Paramount thought it’d be a nice idea to go ahead and shoot a short teaser trailer to drum up awareness. As we first reported, the teaser will be attached to prints of The Dictator and it includes the entire Channel 4 news team (sans Christina Applegate). Writer/director Adam McKay recently talked a bit about getting the gang back together to shoot the teaser and dropped a few hints about what to expect in the follow-up (no Ghost Rider, a Serpico beard, and either 3D or ½ D). Hit the jump to see what he had to say.

Though principal photography for the long-awaited Anchorman 2 isn’t scheduled to begin until next February, it appears that we’ll actually get our first look at the reunited Channel 4 news team much sooner than we thought. We’ve been told by someone who caught an advanced screening of The Dictator that the Sacha Baron Cohen comedy is preceded by a brief teaser featuring the entire news team (sans Christina Applegate) talking about how excited they are to return. Huzzah! Hit the jump for more.

Steve Carell has moved up from The 40 Year Old Virgin to a marriage counselor for Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep in Hope Springs. The film, formerly titled Great Hope Springs, centers on Arnold (Jones) and Maeve (Streep) Soames, a middle-aged couple who find that their marriage has gone stale after 30 years. In a last ditch effort to save their relationship, they seek the help of marriage counselor Dr. Bernie Feld (Carell). The trailer has some great character moments and it’s nice to see Jones and Streep playing some plain old ordinary people for a change, though they play them rather well. Hope Springs, written by Vanessa Taylor (Game of Thrones), will reunite Streep with The Devil Wears Prada director, David Frankel. The romantic comedy, which opens August 10th, also stars Elisabeth Shue and Jean Smart. Hit the jump to see the trailer and poster for Hope Springs.

New images from the Keira Knightley movies Anna Karenina and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World have gone online. Knightley plays the title character in Joe Wright‘s adaptation of Leo Tolstoy‘s classic tome about late 19th-century Russian society. Seeking a Friend is far more light-hearted fare, and has Knightley playing a woman who sets out on a road-trip with a guy (Steve Carell) who’s trying to find his high-school sweetheart during Earth’s final days (it doesn’t sound light-hearted, but you can see from the trailer that it’s a comedy).
Hit the jump to check out the images. Anna Karenina opens November 9th. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World opens June 22nd

There’s a reunion of sorts happening for Steve Carell and Toni Collette, who last starred together in 2006 Oscar-winner, Little Miss Sunshine. Carell and Collette will join Jim Rash (Community) and Nat Faxon’s (Bad Teacher) directorial debut, The Way, Way Back. Their script landed on 2010′s Black List, and after earning an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay of their effort for The Descendents, I’m sure we can look forward to much more from the duo. The Way, Way Back is an indie drama about a dysfunctional family, but that’s where the similarities to Little Miss Sunshine seem to stop. The plot centers on a teenage boy on summer vacation who is coming to grips with his emotionally-distant mother and his cheating step-father. The parental roles will be played by Collette and Carell, while the film also stars Sam Rockwell, Allison Janney and Annasophia Robb. Hit the jump for more.

Steve Carell is in negotiations to lead the live-action adaptation of the children’s book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The book, which was one of my favorite as a child, is about a kid who wakes up with gum in his hair, and whose day goes downhill from there. According to Deadline, Carell is in talks to play “Ben”, although I don’t recall if that character is in the book. The feature film adaptation will likely add characters to pad out the story, so it’s possible “Ben” could be a new addition. Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right) is set to direct.
Nabbing Carell is a boost for any project, although it’s a double-edged sword with the actor’s busy schedule since waiting on him could delay shooting. Hit the jump for a synopsis of Alexander and the Terrible…, and a refresher on Carell’s other projects. The popular actor will be seen later this year in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and Great Hope Springs.

Focus Features has released new images for Wes Anderson‘s Moonrise Kingdom (premiering at Cannes, and then opening in limited release on May 25th), Seeking a Friend for the End of the World starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley (opening June 22nd), and the stop-motion animated film Paranorman (opening in 3D on August 17th). Note that the image from Moonrise Kingdom is probably promotional and not from the movie.

I genuinely thought this day would never come. After coming thisclose to a greenlight with the original cast and director in tow, Paramount ultimately passed on a sequel to Anchorman, one of the best comedies of the past 25 years. Writer/director Adam McKay revealed that their pitch to the studio was to do an all-out musical, with the entire cast performing for four months on Broadway before going straight into production. Apparently averse to brilliant ideas, Paramount balked at the notion. Now, with great pleasure, I’m happy to say that Anchorman 2 is back on track. Hit the jump for more.
[Update: Backstage video of Ron Burgandy/Will Ferrell's antics has gone online, and we've included it after the jump. Also, McKay confirmed on Twitter that the movie is definitely happening and filming on Anchorman 2 will begin in February 2013. Huzzah!]

As The Office wanders the airwaves like Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense (refusing to admit it’s been dead this whole season), Steve Carell continues to prove that he most assuredly won the break-up with a host of interesting and lucrative projects. Now comes word that the in-demand comedian is attached to Warner Bros.’ blockbuster comedy Magic Kingdom For Sale—Sold!.
Adapted from fantasy author Terry Brooks’1986 novel, Kingdom will see Carell slide into the role of lawyer Ben Holiday who, desperate to start over in the wake of his pregnant wife’s death, shells out $1 million to purchase the rights to a magical kingdom he sees in a catalog. After being magically transported to this magic kingdom, however, Ben finds himself with a bit of a lemon, as the land is in utter disarray and in danger from a malevolent evil, a malevolent evil that, presumably, can only be defeated by Carell’s signature good-natured hilarity. Written by Craig Wright (Lost), the film is currently in need of a director. Hit the jump for more.

Universal has released the teaser trailer and poster for Despicable Me 2. There aren’t any plot details or even footage from the film, but that doesn’t mean the marketing campaign can’t begin 15 months before the movie opens. So how do you sell a movie without the movie? The minions! By being adorable, the minions can sell anything. Granted, this is really more of an announcement trailer, although I have no idea why they’re “singing” the Beach Boys’ “Barbara Ann”. I can’t remember if that was a thing in the first movie or not.
Hit the jump to check out the teaser trailer and poster. The film features the voice talents of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, and Al Pacino. Despicable Me 2 opens in 3D on July 3, 2013.

The first trailer for the apocalyptic dramedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World has landed. The film stars Steve Carell as a man who sets out with a woman (Keira Knightley) to search for his high-school sweetheart during Earth’s final days. It’s a premise you’d expect from a big budget sci-fi pic or a zany road trip comedy, but the tone on display in this trailer is nothing short of fantastic. Director Lorene Scafaria has populated the flick with a brilliant ensemble, as we see Patton Oswalt, Rob Heubel, Connie Britton, Gillian Jacobs, Rob Corddry, and more pop up in this short trailer alone. There are genuinely funny moments, but an underlying sadness permeates throughout that hints at some strong character work as well. I love the way the apocalypse is tackled here and can’t wait to see more.
Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Adam Brody, Derek Luke, Melanie Lynskey, T.J. Miller, and Melinda Dillon. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World opens June 22nd.
