StudioCanal is readying an English-language remake of the 2006 French horror film Them, and Variety reports that they’ve tapped commercials director David Alcalde to take the helm. The original film centers on a married couple who are terrorized by hooded assailants throughout one very long night. Adrian Guerra’s Nostromo Pictures is producing the remake. Guerra previously produced Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, so he’s got some experience producing genre films. StudioCanal actually co-produced the original French version of Them, which was written and directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud. Alcalde will be making his feature directorial debut on the project. He’s previously directed over 200 commercials out of Spain and Mexico, and won Screamfest with his 2006 short Happy Birthday to You. Hit the jump to watch the trailer for the French film Them.

Writer-director Rowan Joffe (Brighton Rock) is set to adapt Steve Watson’s debut novel Before I Go to Sleep. Variety reports that the story is about “a young woman who, after a night of partying, wakes up to discover that she has aged beyond recognition.” I like how the book is described as a “psychological thriller” when that logline could just as easily be applied to an Anna Faris comedy.
Joffe penned the script for The American, and his directorial debut, Brighton Rock, is currently playing at the Toronto International Film Festival. Before I Go to Sleep will be produced under Ridley and Tony Scott’s production company, Scott Free. StudioCanal will executive produce.

One of the more fascinating moments in many auteur filmographies is the moment when he or she tackles their first big studio project. Stepping (at least financially) into the Hollywood big leagues can be both wonderful and disastrous (and sometimes both).
Contempt was a film that, for Jean-Luc Godard, stands out as such a creative oddity; a studio-fueled adaptation of a 1954 novel (by Alberto Moravia, also known for the source material of Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Conformist) with big name stars like Jack Palance, Brigitte Bardot and (playing himself) Fritz Lang. This morning, Criterion announced they are losing the rights to a number of StudioCanal films. According to the email, at the end of March over 20 films will no longer be offered on DVD or Blu-ray (if available). The rights are going to Lionsgate, so they’ll be on DVD in the future, just not on the Criterion label. Therefore, if you’re a Criterion collector, or just someone that wants to own a great edition of these films, you might want to buy them ASAP or you’ll have to pay a collector price.
But the best part of the email is Criterion saying, “we will be offering these titles at an additional $5 off on our website.” Hit the jump for the list of movies and more info:
