Rainn Wilson Talks HESHER, SUPER, GALAXY QUEST, and His Jay Roach Produced Renaissance Fair Movie

Rainn Wilson Hesher interview slice

With writer/director Spencer Susser’s Hesher getting released this weekend, I recently got to sit down with the cast and Susser to talk about the film.  Before going any further, if you haven’t seen the trailer, I suggest checking it out here.  While the summer is filled with huge explosions and movies that cost hundreds of millions of dollars, I promise you…none of them feature a main character as crazy as Hesher.  Playing the lead is Joseph Gordon-Levitt and it’s an awesome performance. The film also stars Rainn Wilson, Natalie Portman, and Devin Brochu.

While I already posted my video interviews with Susser and Gordon-Levitt, I’ve got one more and it’s with Rainn Wilson.  During the interview we talked about the positive response to Super, what attracted him to Hesher, what was it like on set, and we also talked about what’s the last video game he’s played, does he ever get recognized from being in Galaxy Quest, and what is he working on now.  Hit the jump to watch.

With director James Gunn’s superhero flick Super playing in limited release and VOD, I recently got to sit down with him to talk about the movie.  As you might expect from Gunn (Slither, PG-Porn), Super is violent, twisted, and darkly comic.  I had a lot of fun watching it.

During the interview, Gunn talked about the history of Super and how the project came together (a lot of it has to do with Jenna Fischer), casting Kevin Bacon, the violence in the film, his thoughts on video on demand, his short film in the Farrelly brothers Movie 43, and a lot more.  Hit the jump to watch.

With director James Gunn’s superhero flick Super playing in limited release and VOD, I recently got to sit down with Liv Tyler to talk about how she got involved with the project.  As you might expect from Gunn (Slither, PG-Porn), Super is violent, twisted, and darkly comic.  I had a lot of fun watching it.

During the very fun interview, Tyler talked about how she got involved with the project, did she sign on to be higher up on the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon scale, what her’s karaoke song (which led to her singing Whitesnake!), and what’s up with The Strangers 2 and The Hobbit.  While some actors are guarded with their answers, I have to give it to Tyler, she was a great interview. During the interview, Wilson talked about the six degrees of Kevin Bacon, what’s his karaoke song, how did he get involved in the project (has to do with Jenna Fischer), how did his character change after he signed on, his thoughts on VOD, and we ended the interview talking about The Office.  Hit the jump to watch:

Ellen Page Video Interview SUPER

With director James Gunn’s superhero flick Super opening this weekend, I recently got to sit down with Ellen Page to talk about how she got involved with the project.  As you might expect from Gunn (Slither, PG-Porn), the film is violent, twisted, and darkly comic.  During the interview, Page talked about the six degrees of Kevin Bacon, what’s her karaoke song, does she have an opinion on the ending of Inception, the violence in Super, upcoming projects like Freeheld (which will be written by Ron Nyswaner) and Stitch and Bitch with Alia Shawkat.

Finally, if you’re a fan of Page, you definitely need to see Super.  The reason I say this is you’ve never seen Page like this.  When I saw Super, she had the entire theater laughing at some of the insane stuff she does on screen.  It was great.  Hit the jump to watch the interview:

New Posters for CARS 2 and SUPER

New posters have been released for Cars 2 and Super.  The poster for Cars 2 is beyond bland, but at least it doesn’t have a character falling into a vat of shit, so I guess I should be grateful for that.  As for the Super posters, I like the flyer-design and how they reference certain crimes (ranging from line-butting to pedophilia) that “heroes” Crimson Bolt (Rainn Wilson) and his sidekick Boltie (Ellen Page) take on.

Hit the jump to check out the posters.  Cars 2 opens in 3D on June 24th.  Super opens April 1st.

Programming for Wondercon 2011 Announced: GREEN LANTERN, COWBOYS & ALIENS, IMMORTALS, and More

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: March 21st, 2011 at 8:11 am

Programming for this year’s WonderCon has been announced.  This will be my first year attending WonderCon and Steve has informed me that it’s like Comic-Con except you can breathe.  While WonderCon may be the less-famous sibling to Comic-Con, it still has some big-name panels for fans.  This year, WonderCon is giving over the Esplanade Ballroom to some of the year’s biggest genre properties.  Leading the list of films is Warner Bros’ Green Lantern as well as Cowboys & Aliens, Super, The Three Musketeers, Hanna, Priest, and Immortals.  TV is also getting some attention with panels devoted to the new series Falling Skies, ThunderCats, and Terra Nova as well as Nikita, Doctor Who, Human Target, and V.  There will also be plenty of artists, writers, and other creative folks.

Hit the jump for the full schedule.  Wondercon 2011 runs from April 1 – 3rd at the Moscone Center South in San Francisco.

A lot of online folks have been giving James Gunn’s Super a hard time because of its obvious similarities to Matthew Vaughan’s Kick-Ass.  It’s true that Gunn’s film– which stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, and a hilarious Kevin Bacon– share more than a few passing similarities, but Super only improves upon the “real-life superhero” sub-genre that Kick-Ass mined so well last year.  What has Gunn done to improve the formula?  Find out after the break.

New Trailer for James Gunn’s SUPER Starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page

IFC has released a trailer for James Gunn’s upcoming superhero flick Super.  I like that the trailer has to animate over the language and violence in order to make it viewable for all-ages.  It’s a James Gunn movie and it’s best to expect something violent, twisted, and darkly comic.  Super looks like it’s going to deliver on all three counts and that makes me very excited to see this flick.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer.  Super stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, and Nathan Fillion.  It opens April 1st.

New Posters Released for SUPER Starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page, and Disney’s WINNIE THE POOH

New posters have been released for two upcoming films: Super and Winnie the Pooh. Directed by James Gunn (Slither), Super tells the story of an average guy who takes on the persona of “The Crimson Bolt” upon learning that his wife is having an affair. The film stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler and Kevin Bacon. IFC is set to release the film on April 1st.

The “bear of little brain” returns to the big screen in Disney’s Winnie the Pooh. Narrated by John Cleese, the 2D “hand-drawn style” animated film follows Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Rabbit, Piglet, Owl, Kanga and Roo on an all-new adventure to help Christopher Robin. Winnie the Pooh is slated for a July 15th release. Hit the jump to check out both posters.

First Clip from James Gunn’s SUPER

by Jason Barr    Posted: October 20th, 2010 at 10:08 am

The first clip from writer/director James Gunn’s (Slither) superhero parody flick Super is now available online following its world premiere during last night’s 2010 Scream Awards.  Running at almost two minutes, the footage is the same that Gunn and co. debuted at Comic-Con over the summer and is a reminder to all of us that there is, in fact, “no butting in line.”

Super was picked up by IFC Films at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, so we will hopefully be seeing it in theaters sooner rather than later.  To check out Steve’s video review of the film from TIFF, click here.  To see the clip as well as a synopsis, hit the jump.  Super stars Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, and Nathan Fillion.

IFC Picks Up James Gunn’s SUPER Starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page – UPDATED with Press Release

by Jason Barr    Posted: September 12th, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Less than 48 hours after it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, James Gunn’s (Slither) Super has found its distributor.  IFC Films has paid seven figures to secure the U.S. rights to Gunn’s everyman take on the superhero archetype.  While IFC normally pays less for its deals, they apparently faced some stiff competition for the film from potential buyers such as Magnolia.

Super stars Rainn Wilson as an “average guy” who takes on the persona of “The Crimson Bolt” upon learning that his wife is having an affair.  Starring alongside Wilson are Ellen Page, Liv Tyler, and Kevin Bacon.  To learn more about Super, check out Steve’s video blog/review of the film which he recorded shortly after its Toronto premiere.

[Update: You can now check out the official press release after the jump.]

TIFF 2010 Video Blog: James Gunn’s SUPER

Just a few minutes ago I got out of the premiere of James Gunn’s Super at the Toronto International Film Festival.  As a fan of his previous work (Slither, PG Porn), I was hoping Super would be awesome.  While it didn’t reach the level I hoped for walking in, there was enough cool stuff that you should definitely be excited to check it out when it eventually gets released.  Also, while Rainn Wilson was great as the lead, Super was the Ellen Page show. Trust me, you have never seen Ellen Page like this, and she had the entire theater laughing at some of the insane stuff she does on screen.  Finally, if you were nervous Super would be PG-13 or play it safe, since Gunn made it himself and very low budget…let’s just say Super has a lot of creative freedom and a lot of blood.

Anyway, right after the movie ended I recorded a video blog with Peter from Slashfilm and we were joined by Alex from FirstShowing. Hit the jump for our thoughts on the film and keep your eyes peeled for a very brief appearance by a famous movie director.

New Image from James Gunn’s SUPER Starring Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page

We now have a new image from director James Gunn’s (Slither) upcoming dark comedy/super hero movie, Super.  The film tells the story of a regular guy (Rainn Wilson) who decides to become a superhero when his wife (Liv Tyler) becomes a drug addict.  Matt was impressed by what he saw during the film’s Comic-Con panel and if this new image that was released by James Gunn via his own website is any indication, then we are truly going to get one crazy little movie with Super.  However, we won’t have to wait too long before we start hearing how the film is like since it’s scheduled to premiere during this year’s Toronto International Film Festival Midnight Madness program.

Hit the jump for the image and a full plot synopsis.
