A few days ago, I posted an awesome Loki figure from The Avengers made by Hot Toys.  It was the first “Geek Gifts” article in a long time and I mentioned that the response to the post would determine if we’d continue the column.  Let’s just say it was a success.  So, as promised, it’s time for another “Geek Gifts” article and this one is especially relevant for those that like cool t-shirts.

If you’ve ever seen my video interviews, you know I love wearing t-shirts.  I especially love wearing shirts that are inspired by my favorite movies and TV shows.  Recently, a friend turned me onto a company called RedBubble, and they let their users submit their own designs and some of them are pretty great.  Since I know a lot of you don’t have the time to go through the thousands of reader submissions, I’ve done the legwork for you.  So hit the jump if you like Studio Ghibli, Breaking Bad, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Tron, the original Superman, Battle of the Planets, The Lion King, and more.

Possible Description of Two Scenes from Zack Snyder’s MAN OF STEEL [Updated With New Info]

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: May 15th, 2012 at 12:37 pm

This summer’s superhero fare is off to a great start with the smashing success of The Avengers, and we’ve still got The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spider-Man to look forward to.  If you think that sounds like a crowded superhero year, remember that we almost also had Superman in the mix.  Man of Steel was moved from December 2012 to the summer of 2013, and though we really haven’t seen much from director Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot, we’re most likely getting our first look at the film at Comic-Con in July.

Someone claiming to be a visual effects supervisor has taken to the ever-accurate IMDb message boards to write up a description of two scenes from Man of Steel.  He claims to have seen the clips during a sizzle reel for Weta at a visual effects conference.  The description includes impressions of Henry Cavill as Superman, Michael Shannon as General Zod, and Snyder’s signature visual flair.  Hit the jump to read on.

Update: The unnamed IMDb user who posted the original description has posted an update which adds credibility to his post.

Update 2: We’ve been asked by WB to take down the descriptions.

TOP 5: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, MAGIC MIKE, Anthony Hopkins in HITCHCOCK, Set Photo/Video Recap, What Superhero Films Could Learn from BATMAN: THE MOVIE

If you’re a regular around these parts on the weekends you may have noticed that Collider was “Top 5-less” last Saturday. For the first time since our inaugural installment last May, the weekly feature failed to grace the site. The reason? My bachelor party. That’s right, instead of spending my Saturday morning/afternoon putting together a highlight reel of coverage from the preceding week, I gallivanted through the streets of Chicago partaking in debauchery in its most primal form (i.e. arcade games and karaoke). All this in mind, a big thank you to Steve and the rest of the Collider team and to you, the reader, for the excused absence is in order. It’s good to be back.

In this week’s edition you’ll find new posters and new footage from The Amazing-Spider Man courtesy of the film’s latest international trailer, the first trailer and poster for Steven Soderbergh‘s male-stripper inspired Magic Mike, the first look at Anthony Hopkins as The Master of Suspense in Hitchcock, a set photo/video recap featuring, among other things, Star Trek 2 and Les Miserables, and Matt’s superhero film editorial which begs the question, “Why So Serious?” (see what I did there?). As always, a brief recap and link to each can be found after the jump.

Ayelet Zurer Talks DARLING COMPANION and Playing Superman’s Mother in MAN OF STEEL

In the drama Darling Companion, from director/co-writer/producer Lawrence Kasdan (Body Heat, The Big Chill, Silverado), Beth Winter (Diane Keaton) and her daughter (Elisabeth Moss) take home a dog that they find on the side of the freeway, much to the ire of her husband, Joseph (Kevin Kline). Before long, the dog, aptly named Freeway, becomes a beloved member of the family. But, when the dog bounds away into the woods after a deer, everything is thrown into crisis mode and a search party forms that ultimately ends up bringing the entire family closer together.

At the film’s press day, Collider spoke to Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer (who plays Carmen, the caretaker of the Winters’ cabin) for this exclusive interview about how she came to be a part of this film, auditioning at Lawrence and Meg Kasdan’s house, what drew her to this character, how much she enjoyed working with such an accomplished cast, and the challenge of working with dogs.  She also talked about her role as Superman’s biological mother, Lara Lor-Van, in Man of Steel, what fans can expect from this version, working with director Zack Snyder, and what types of roles she’d like to do, in the future.  Check out what she had to say after the jump:

Editorial: Contemporary Superhero Films Should Take a Lesson from BATMAN: THE MOVIE

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 16th, 2012 at 5:10 pm

Last week, we reported that Zack Snyder was going for an “edgy” Superman in the reboot Man of Steel.  But even before Snyder got his hands on the property, Superman Returns went with a more morose Man of Tomorrow by playing up his loneliness and stalking his ex-girlfriend.  Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man movies were reasonably light until they slammed into the third act, and then the character had to go much darker for Spider-Man 3.  Now the Spider-Man reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, is playing up the gritty aspects of the web-slinger’s story.  Almost all of the Avengers prequel movies have a reasonable balance of action, humor, and pathos, but with the exception of Captain America, they’re all aggressively modern.  Does it have to be this way?  Do we have to ground every superhero in a PG-13 reality?  And would audiences accept anything different?

Zack Snyder Making MAN OF STEEL “Edgy” Like THE DARK KNIGHT

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: April 11th, 2012 at 9:50 am

man-of-steel-logo-slice

Today in Totally Unsurprising News, we’ve learned that director Zack Snyder has an edgier Superman planned for the reboot Man of Steel.  The news isn’t much of a shock since Snyder doesn’t make quiet, subtle pictures, and his ability to deliver something “edgy” was probably part of the reason why Warner Bros. and producer Christopher Nolan hired him in the first place.

In a recent interview, actor Dylan Sprayberry, who plays the young Clark Kent, talked about what Snyder has envisioned for the Man of Tomorrow’s new flight to the big screen.  Hit the jump for details.  Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Harry Lennix, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, Richard Schiff, and Russell Crowe.  The film opens June 14, 2013.

Warner Bros. Reveals MAN OF STEEL Banner

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: March 29th, 2012 at 4:59 pm

Thus far, we’ve only seen one official image from Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel. That fact has now changed, as Warner Bros. has launched the film’s official Facebook page and unveiled the banner for the superhero pic. I’d talk about the color, but I’m color blind (really), though I do like the feel and texture of the “S”. The title is nicely made of, well, steel, and the whole thing is slightly reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s title treatments for his Batman trilogy. This makes sense, as Nolan is a producer on Man of Steel and was integral in getting the film off the ground and choosing Snyder to direct. Also, Warner Bros. is behind both franchises, so it would be monetarily sensible to market Man of Steel as similar to Nolan’s incredibly successful series.

Hit the jump to check out the banner. The film stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Harry Lennix, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, Richard Schiff, and Russell Crowe. Man of Steel opens on June 14th, 2013.

With Max Landis’ movie Chronicle opening in theaters this weekend, you might be wondering to yourself just how the young writer became interested in superheroic origins or why he chose to give one of his protagonists supervillain tendencies. Well it just so happens that we’ve come across a short directed and narrated by Landis himself that might explain some things. In The Death and Return of Superman, Landis (along with some famous friends like Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, Ron Howard, Simon Pegg and Chris Hardwick) takes viewers through an NSFW recap of the infamous DC comic series that saw the fall (and rise) of the last son of Krypton. Behind the Scenes Image from MAN OF STEEL Shows Henry Cavill Suited Up

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: January 23rd, 2012 at 2:16 pm

We’re still quite a ways off from the release of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, and the Superman reboot is still in the midst of filming. While we’ve already been privy to quite a few photos from the set, we’ve gotten very few good looks at star Henry Cavill in the Superman suit. Those angling for some suit images should be happy today, as a behind the scenes image from the set has arrived highlighting the superhero getup. Cavill is seen posing for a photo with a young boy, giving us a nice close-up look at his Superman garb. It’s not anything mind-blowing, but with no trailer and only one official image released thus far, we’ll take what we can get.

Hit the jump to check out the image. The film also stars Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Harry Lennix, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, Richard Schiff, and Russell Crowe. Man of Steel is slated for June 14th, 2013.

Richard Schiff to Play Dr. Hamilton in MAN OF STEEL

The new Superman movie Man of Steel has been shooting since August, so you know any casting news that surfaces tonight is for a small role.  However, Variety‘s report that Richard Schiff has joined the cast as “Dr. Hamilton” may be noteworthy to fans of the comic.  He is described as Superman’s “scientific advisor,” building various machinery to aid our hero’s fight against crime.  The character history suggests the role has the potential to grow larger, perhaps supported by the fact that director Zack Snyder secured Emmy winner and West Wing all star Schiff for what could amount to a bit part in the reboot.

Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Antje Traue, Harry Lennix, Ayelet Zurer, Christopher Meloni, and Russell CroweMan of Steel opens June 14, 2013.  Hit the jump for the Hamilton’s character bio.

Hasbro Toys Concept Art from Tim Burton’s Aborted SUPERMAN LIVES

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: December 14th, 2011 at 1:58 pm

Superman Lives is the non-movie-movie gift that keeps on giving. Director Tim Burton’s Superman adaptation never made it to the screen, but plenty of concept art was drawn up and costume tests were performed. We’ve seen Nicolas Cage looking ridiculous in the rubbery Superman suit, we’ve seen images of the costume sculpts from the film, and we’ve even seen video of the light-infused suit in action. Now more concept art has surfaced by way of Hasbro’s mock-ups for the all important toy tie-ins. They’re in keeping with the silliness that Burton had planned, and are worth a gander if this sort of thing piques your interest. They also include a look at the Kryptonian Explorer. Hit the jump to check them out.

New Set Photos from SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL and Paul Thomas Anderson’s THE MASTER

This article highlights both extremes on the spectrum of set photos, using two movie starring Amy Adams as examples. On one hand, you’ve got the blurry candids of Henry Cavill as Superman and Michael Shannon as General Zod on the set of Superman: Man of Steel. Not especially revealing, but Superman! Zod!

On the other hand, we have gorgeous black-and-white photographs taken on the set of Paul Thomas Anderson‘s religious cult picture The Master. No stars or supervillains, but arguably more insightful into the process as a look at the period detail on the 1950s-era costumes and sets. Hit the jump to see the images plus background on both films.

To recap: Mondo—the collectible art boutique of the Alamo Drafthouse—has licenses for Star Wars, Star Trek, Pixar, Disney, the work of directors like Guillermo del Toro and Wes Craven, Jurassic Park, and more.  And now the creators of some of the best posters around have the license for DC Comics (if Mondo ever picks up Marvel, they’ll have shot the geek moon).  Naturally, the first poster is based on Superman.  J.C. Richard’s “Fortress of Solitude” measures 12×32, is limited to an edition of 390, and costs $50 (plus shipping).  The poster will go on sale at MondoTees a random time on Black Friday.  It may be worth it to forego all other shopping and just keep refreshing @MondoNews‘ Twitter feed for the announcement.

Warner Bros. Already Looking for a Screenwriter for MAN OF STEEL Sequel?

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 15th, 2011 at 8:55 pm

slice_superman_insignia_01

File this one under rumor for now, but apparently Warner Bros. is happy with what they’re seeing from Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and is already on the hunt for a screenwriter to tackle a sequel. Think McFly Think (via The Film Stage) reports that WB has put together wishlist of scribes that includes Steve Kloves (all the Harry Potter movies except Order of the Phoenix), Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans), and Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark). While it wouldn’t at all be surprising that WB is getting a move on with a sequel (they’re contractually obligated to keep making Superman movies lest they lose the character rights), the report at this time is unfounded.

We’ve yet to see even a teaser trailer from Man of Steel and they’ve only released one official image thus far, so we’re pretty in the dark on the pic. We know that Christopher Nolan shepherded the film into production with a script by David S. Goyer, and we’ve got Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Supes. I like Michael Shannon as General Zod, and the rest of the cast filled out nicely (Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, etc.) so I’m hoping for the best. Man of Steel opens June 14th, 2013.

Henry Cavill Talks IMMORTALS and MAN OF STEEL

With director Tarsem Singh’s new film Immortals opening this weekend, Collider will be overrun with exclusive interviews with the filmmakers and cast over the next few days.  For those not familiar with Immortals (watch the trailer and clips), the film centers on Theseus (Henry Cavill), a mortal who teams up with the Greek gods in order to defeat the power-hungry King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke).  The film also stars Freida Pinto, Luke Evans, Isabel Lucas, Joseph Morgan, Kellan Lutz, and Stephen Dorff.

Anyway, earlier today I got on the phone with Henry Cavill for an exclusive interview.  We talked about how he got involved in Immortals, the training, working with Tarsem and Mickey Rourke, the practical sets, his reaction to seeing the finished film, and what it was like to promote the film at WonderCon and Comic-Con.  In addition, since Cavill is currently filming Man of Steel for director Zack Snyder, he talked about what has surprised him about the production, his interaction with producer Christopher Nolan, his reaction to getting cast as Superman, how he prepared for the role, and whether he ever dressed up as Superman as a kid.  Hit the jump for more.
