Superman Lives is the non-movie-movie gift that keeps on giving. Director Tim Burton’s Superman adaptation never made it to the screen, but plenty of concept art was drawn up and costume tests were performed. We’ve seen Nicolas Cage looking ridiculous in the rubbery Superman suit, we’ve seen images of the costume sculpts from the film, and we’ve even seen video of the light-infused suit in action. Now more concept art has surfaced by way of Hasbro’s mock-ups for the all important toy tie-ins. They’re in keeping with the silliness that Burton had planned, and are worth a gander if this sort of thing piques your interest. They also include a look at the Kryptonian Explorer. In October, we brought you a look at some of the costume sculpts for Tim Burton’s aborted Superman adaptation, Superman Lives. The shiny suit certainly got the alien part of Superman‘s origin down. It just seemed to forgo everything else that was iconic about the superhero. Now video of the suit has gone online and it looks like Superman’s powers not only included being faster than a locomotive and leaping tall buildings in a single bound, but also being a walking light-show for children. If Supes planned to defeat his enemies by dazzling them to death, then he had the right costume.

As you may or may not know, in the late 90s, Tim Burton was hired to direct a new Superman movie. Entitled Superman Lives, the project was set to star Nicolas Cage as The Man of Steel. Warner Bros. reportedly spent over $50 million on the movie and then dumped it without ever shooting a single frame. Visual Effects artist Steve Johnson has now posted costume sculpts from the failed project. In Jake Rossen’s enjoyable book Superman vs. Hollywood, Kevin Smith (who was brought on to write Superman before Tim Burton was hired and has this fantastic anecdote about producer Jon Peters) joked, “Maybe [Burton] wanted to see Superman in all black. With scissors for hands.” It turns out that Smith wasn’t that far off. When Warner execs were reportedly horrified saw screen tests of Cage in the finished costume. After seeing these images, I think you’ll understand why.
