THE SUPERMAN MOTION PICTURE ANTHOLOGY 1978-2006 Blu-ray Review

The new Superman Blu-ray set has arrived with much fanfare and ballyhoo, and it certainly provides a handsome package. The big question, of course, is whether owners of previous sets should spend the extra money on this one or not. The studios’ perpetual habit of double-dipping has made buyers skeptical, and before they pony up $100 on a new collection – even one as good as this – they want to know if they’re getting anything new. In this case, the Blu-ray set perfectly duplicates the 2006 “tin case” DVD collection (which is no longer widely available). It has absolutely nothing on top of that, and if you already own that collection, this new one offers only improved sound and picture quality. Having said that, there is so much awesome stuff here – duplicated or no – that any fan worth his super salt absolutely needs it in his collection. Will Superman Punch Someone in the Face? Zack Snyder talks SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL

Just an hour ago I got to interview director Zack Snyder for his new movie Sucker Punch.  With the film getting released next weekend, you can expect the full interview online very soon.  However, towards the end of our conversation, I asked him about Superman: Man of Steel and wanted to get that online today.  Since I knew I’d only get one question about his next project, I tried to make it a good one.  I asked if Superman would punch someone in the face!

While there are moments in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns that I liked, for the most part, I consider the film a missed opportunity.  One of the reasons is that Superman never got physical.  We only saw him moping around and every once in awhile, got some cool action (the plane rescue was incredible).  I figure if Superman gets to punch someone in the face in Man of Steel…that means we’re going to get an awesome villain.  So what did Snyder tell me?  Hit the jump to watch.  I also asked him where they’re going to film and he did confirm Vancouver is one of the locations.

In the over 70 years since Superman’s creation, there have been a plethora of attempts to bring the Man of Steel to the silver screen. From Tim Burton’s planned adaptation in the late 90s, to Kevin Smith’s attempts at a Superman that doesn’t fly in Superman Lives, there have been as many unsuccessful attempts at making Superman movies than successful ones.

A few weeks ago we showed you some costume sculpts from Tim Burton’s… not at all homoerotic attempt at a Superman film.  Now, we have new images of Doomsday concept art from a once-possible Bryan Singer-helmed Superman Returns sequel, as well as costume concept art from a scrapped 2002 J.J. Christopher Nolan On Board to Direct DARK KNIGHT Sequel and “Godfather” the SUPERMAN Franchise

Yesterday, we reported on David Goyer leaving his showrunning duties for ABC’s FlashForward focus on his film career, which included a mention of the inevitable Batman 3. At the time, it seemed like a continuation of the logical but as-of-yet unconfirmed rumor that director Christopher Nolan and screenwriter Goyer would return to Gotham.  A new report Deadline, advances said heresay and ups the ante by about a million chips.  Not only has Nolan cracked the story of the sequel to The Dark Knight and committed to participate, but Warner Bros. has recruited the modern auteur to “godfather” the newest film in the Superman franchise.  It’s unlikely that Nolan will direct the Superman sequel, but any portion of the reins handed to the man indicates a serious effort on the studio’s part to make the best Superman while they still have the time.
