SURROGATES Blu-ray Review

Surrogates is another cautionary sci-fi tale to hit DVD/Blu-ray shelves that forgets the main thing that makes science fiction really interesting, is allowing the audience to think.  The movie instead prefers fast pace and a short run time to actually allowing the world and characters to take a breath and live for a moment.  The credits sum up how the surrogacy program began as a way for handicapped and paralyzed people to experience a normal, albeit virtual, life.  Then of course the trend catches on faster than the iPhone and we end up living in a world where everyone is plugged into a computer and disconnected from each other. Unfortunately with an 89 minute running time, we don’t stay in this world long enough to really care for anyone involved.

Comic book sales may not be stellar, but their film rights are flying off the shelves. Mandeville Films, fresh off the release of another post-2000 comic movie “Surrogates,” are in a rights optioning mood. The new item on the shelf? “Cla$$war,” a 2002 limited-run comic series by Rob Williams and published by Com.x. The comic is a six-issue political superhero series starring a hero named “The American” and his origins as a government super-soldier. More about the series and purchase after the jump.

Weekend Box Office – It’s Still CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS for Moviegoers

Despite mounting an early and aggressive advertising campaign for their high-concept sci-fi thriller “Surrogates”, Disney could not catch up to Sony’s holdover hit “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” in time to claim the number one spot on the charts.  After opening up a small lead on Friday, the 3D animated toon finished with another $24 million on its second weekend, making it easily the most-successful release of the month at $60 million in total.  September had more bad news for its new releases as both MGM’s reboot of “Fame” and Overture’s sci-fi horror flick “Pandorum” struggled to find their footing.  Ha! Get it?  The dancers of “Fame” couldn’t find their footing!  More witty bon mots after the jump.

Title Weekend Total
1 Cloudy w/a Chance… $24,600,000 $60,036,000
2 Surrogates $15,000,000 $15,000,000
3 Fame $10,000,000 $10,000,000
4 The Informant! $6,915,000 $20,992,000
5 I Can Do Bad… $4,750,000 $44,543,000
6 Pandorum $4,408,000 $4,408,000
7 Love Happens $4,327,000 $14,728,000
8 Jennifer’s Body $3,500,000 $12,306,000
9 9 $2,832,000 $27,101,000
10 Inglourious Basterds $2,732,000 $114,460,000

Friday Box Office – CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Reigns for a Second Friday

Audiences haven’t tired of the 3D toon “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” quite yet. Sony Animation’s demographically-appealing feature film brought in another $5.2 million on its eighth day out: a decline of only 31% from its number one debut last Friday.  This means that a second weekend at the top of the box office is now likely.  The film that was supposed to take over that number one spot, Disney’s sci-fi thriller “Surrogates”, was not far behind “Meatballs” with an estimated $5 million from its 2,951 dates.   But if Bruce Willis was going to stage a coup he would have had to make his move before the more kid-centric Saturday session.  Meanwhile, more bad news for MGM as their first feature release of 2009, “Fame”, registered a debut of only $3.5 million from its 3,096 engagements.  Check back tomorrow to see how fall’s first weekend at the movies plays out.

Title Friday Total
1 Cloudy w/a Chance $5,200,000 $41,000,000
2 Surrogates $5,000,000 $5,000,000
3 Fame $3,550,000 $3,550,000
4 The Informant! $2,100,000 $16,100,000
5 Pandorum $1,526,000 $1,526,000

SURROGATES Review

slice_surrogates_movie_bruce_willis_01.jpg

“Surrogates” is science fiction the way that Hollywood does science fiction–with no subtlety whatsoever.  The opening credits of the film do a great job in describing how our world was changed by “surrogates”, synthetic representations of real humans who control their surrogate remotely and live out their lives the same way.  The comment is loud and clear: our reliance on communication technology like the Internet or personal interaction via online avatars diminish the human experience and make us disconnected from each other.  And if we’re all living as creepy, pore-less RealDolls, then yeah, I can agree with that.  But the best science fiction doesn’t make a statement but asks questions.  “Surrogates” already has the answer before the opening credits are over.

Director Jonathan Mostow Exclusive Video Interview SURROGATES

Director Jonathan Mostow Surrogates.jpg

Opening this Friday is director Jonathan Mostow’s “Surrogates”. The film stars Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell and Rosamund Pike and it’s set in a future where most people don’t leave their homes. Instead, 98% of people live vicariously through their robot surrogates and they send them out to interact and work while they’re plugged in. But when a murder happens to someone while they’re plugged in and using their surrogate, Bruce Willis is forced to unplug to figure out what happened. So to help promote the film, I recently spoke with director Jonathan Mostow and he talked about the challenges of making “Surrogates” and the real world sci-fi aspect of the film. Watch the interview after the jump:

She talks about what got her involved, filming the action scenes, and she tells a funny story about filming in Boston and how there weren’t enough “good looking” people. I’ll let her explain.

3 Movie Clips from SURROGATES Starring Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell

Surrogates_News_BruceWillis.jpg

Disney has released 3 movie clips from their upcoming sci-fi movie “Surrogates”. The three clips go by rather quickly, but the first and third clip features new footage from the movie. If you watch all three, you’ll see Bruce Willis as a Surrogate and then you’ll see him after he’s ditched his robot self. While I’m looking forward to the movie as I’m a sci-fi junkie, the footage isn’t anything special. Judge for yourself after the jump:

Disney has released a new “Surrogates” featurette called “A Look Inside”. It’s the normal kind of featurette that explains what the movie is about from the people who made it and it features scenes from the movie to get you interested. If you haven’t seen any footage from “Surrogates”, you should check out this clip as it looks pretty cool.

And if you missed my edit bay report from “Surrogates”, you can read it here. Later tonight or tomorrow I’ll have exclusive interviews with Radha Mitchell and director Jonathan Mostow. Until then, enjoy the featurette.

A few weeks ago I was invited – along with a few other journalists – to the editing room of director Jonathan Mostow’s “Surrogates”. While there we were shown a little bit of footage from the September 25th release and we were also able to ask Jonathan Mostow some questions. My report and the Q and A after the jump:

5 New Images from SURROGATES Starring Bruce Willis and Breaking Benjamin’s new Music Video ‘I Will Not Bow’

by Matt Goldberg    Posted: August 26th, 2009 at 3:25 pm

I have a few suggestions for the band Breaking Benjamin’s music video for the upcoming Bruce Willis flick, “Surrogates”.  First, don’t show the band.  They look like any other of today’s popular “rock” groups (I don’t care what genre you think you’re in; you must actually rock to be labeled as “rock”).  Also, don’t make your first lyrics “Now the dark begins to rise” because some emo kid is going to find the energy to sue for stealing his “poetry”.  Finally, I couldn’t make it past the first 45 seconds.  Maybe you’ll have more luck.  I will say that the scenes from “Surrogate” within the music video look very cool.  Actually, if you just turn off the sound and let it play, it shouldn’t be too bad.

We also have five new images from the film after the jump and you don’t have to listen to shitty modern rock to enjoy them!  “Surrogates” hits theatres on September 25th.
