ABDUCTION Blu-ray Review

Abduction was supposed to be Taylor Lautner’s coming out party as a leading man. Post-New Moon (where his part was more than a brief walk-on), he got a lot of heat as the third member of Twilight’s love triangle, and studios and projects were being thrown at him. Sure, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart couldn’t bring the twi-hards in to their work outside of Forks, but perhaps Lautner was different. And in Abduction he proves how he really is different from those two: he can’t act. Abduction misfired at the box office, and has hurt Lautner’s post-Twilight chances, which is probably for the best. Jason Isaacs, Mario Bello, Lily Collins, Sigourney Weaver, Alfred Molina and Michael Nyqvist co-star in this John Singleton film, and our review of Abduction follows after the jump.

As I write today, in the back of mind rests more than a handful of permutations for my Black Friday plan of attack. Do I really need a new 42 inch HDTV? How about various seasons of television on DVD/Blu-ray for rock bottom prices? What about one of those sweet Dyson vacuum cleaners with the roller ball? The answer to all of the above is most likely a resounding “no”, but need isn’t what Black Friday is all about. Not even close. Black Friday is all about getting something/anything on the cheap if for no other reason than because if you don’t, then the person behind you in line will. Oh, America. How I love thee.

In this week’s “Top 5″ installment you’ll find our set visit coverage for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, our review and interviews for a little movie you may have heard about called The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, the first trailer for director Tarsem Singh’s Snow White-tale Mirror Mirror, a new trailer for Gary Ross’ The Hunger Games adaptation, and Steve’s coverage from his visit to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 Review

I’m always surprised when I like anything Twilight-related.  I’ve written at length on how I find the subtext of the movies repulsive even though I can understand how the text can be enjoyed as shallow fantasy.  The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 even managed to wrap me up in that fantasy for the first half of the movie.  I’m not immune to big weddings and romantic honeymoons, and the first half is filled with happiness and humor.  Sadly, the second half of Breaking Dawn transforms into the mopey and idiotic drama I endured for the past three movies, but at least this time the series reached some glorious so-bad-it’s-good moments.

Taylor Lautner THE TWILIGHT SAGA BREAKING DAWN - PART 1 interview slice

About a week ago I attended the big Los Angeles press junket for Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.  While I already posted the press conferences with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, author Stephenie Meyer, screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg & producer Wyck Godfrey, we’ve still got a number of exclusive and group interviews to post over the next few days.  And up next, Taylor Lautner.

During the press conference, Lautner talked about making Breaking Dawn, the imprint scene, crazy fan encounters, what will stick with him about playing Jacob, his thoughts on why Jacob can’t let Bella go, future projects, and if he’s bummed that after gunning after Bella for all this time, Edward gets a hot vampire bride and he gets a baby. Hit the jump for both the video and transcript.

Producer Wyck Godfrey slice

While at the big Los Angeles press junket for Summit Entertainment’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, Collider got the opportunity to chat with Wyck Godfrey, producer of all the films in the very popular franchise. While we will post what he had to say about the film closer to its November 18th release, we did want to share what he had to say about what he’s focused on, now that the Twilight films are finished shooting.

With his attention currently focused on the ABC drama Revenge, his first foray into television, his company is also developing two movies that will go into production next year. The first is the Biblical epic Goliath, which will give the backstory of David’s pursuit of Goliath. They hope to have Dwayne Johnson in the Goliath role, but they have to cast the David role, as Taylor Lautner will no longer be a part of the project. The other film is hugely popular author Nicholas Sparks latest book, Safe Haven, which is about two people who feel like they’ve been damaged and hurt in love before, and yet can’t help but take that second chance, all with an added thriller and supernatural element to the story. Currently finishing that script, they hope to cast soon. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

Taylor Lautner to Star in Indie Directed by Gus Van Sant

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: November 1st, 2011 at 6:58 pm

Taylor Lautner: Action Star didn’t work out too well, but it’s apparently time to see if audiences dig Taylor Lautner: Indie Star instead. THR reports that the Twilight actor is finalizing a deal to team up with director Gus Van Sant (Milk) on an indie project based on a nonfiction article in The New Yorker that Lautner optioned. Details on the project are slim, but the reports says more information is expected later this week regarding who will be scripting the pic. The actor made his headlining debut with the action film Abduction in September, but the flick performed poorly at the box office and drew a harsh critical reaction (4% on Rotten Tomatoes).

Lautner is bracing for the end of the Twilight franchise by trying to find his niche as an actor. THR says he’s determined to only work with “top directors and writers” from now on, and Van Sant definitely fits that criteria. It appears that Team Lautner is doing a bit of damage control post-Abduction, but I’m not convinced he can handle weighty dramatic material; his stiff delivery is now pretty much a staple of the Twilight franchise. On the other hand, maybe it just takes a director like Van Sant to get a good performance out of the guy. We’ll see soon enough, as they’re aiming to shoot the indie during the first quarter of next year.

Summit has sent over 5 clips from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, the fourth movie in the five-part Twilight series.  In Breaking Dawn, “Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson), plus those they love, must deal with the chain of consequences brought on by a marriage, honeymoon, and the tumultuous birth of a child… which brings an unforeseen and shocking development for Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).”

Billy Burke, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Jackson Rathbone, Nikki Reed, Ashley Greene, and Kellan Lutz also star.  Directed by Bill Condon, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 opens November 18th.  Watch the clips after the break and look for new interviews with the cast later this week.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 Jacob Trailer

by Adam Chitwood    Posted: October 27th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

A new trailer for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 has been released. This trailer focuses on the character Jacob, so we can reasonably expect more character trailers to be released leading up to the film’s premiere. Taylor Lautner is all angsty and pouty in the trailer, pining for Kristen Stewart who’s now been ruined by Robert Pattinson’s seed. Also, Stewart’s sickly appearance is a PSA for anyone hoping to get impregnated by a vampire. If you missed the behind-the-scenes featurette we posted earlier today, you can check that out here.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The film also stars Billy Burke, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Jackson Rathbone, Nikki Reed, Ashley Greene, and Kellan LutzThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 opens November 18th.

New Behind the Scenes Footage from THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1

by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub    Posted: October 27th, 2011 at 7:53 am

Last week, Summit released some behind-the-scenes footage from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.  It was a little over two minutes and it showed Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and director Bill Condon working through a number of scenes when the production was still filming.  If you enjoyed the footage from last week you’ll want to hit the jump, as we’ve been provided with another two or so minutes of additional behind-the-scenes footage.  The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 opens on November 18.

Summit has released a new featurette for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.  The featurette focuses on the wedding between Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson), and as Pattinson so eloquently puts it, “it’s a relatively momentous moment.”  I’m sure Twilight fans will fawn over the wedding scene, and I’m always a fan of seeing an 18-year-old marry a 500-year-old vampire.

Hit the jump to check out the featurette.  The film also stars Taylor Lautner, Billy Burke, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Jackson Rathbone, Nikki Reed, Ashley Greene, and Kellan Lutz.  The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 opens November 18th.

Summit has released some behind-the-scenes footage from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn that we thought would be of interest to the many Twilight fans among you.  There’s a lot of overlap with the recent featurette, but everything is broken up into individual clips.  For my money, the coolest part is a collection of B-roll that shows director Bill Condon working his young stars.  I love this kind of fly-on-the-wall insight into the filmmaking process.  Additionally, we’ve included the new video interviews with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner that Summit added to the electronic press kit. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 opens on November 18.  Hit the jump to see the behind-the-scenes footage and interviews.

New Featurette for THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1

Hot on the heels of the first TV spots for the film, a new featurette for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 has gone online. The featurette includes Kristen Stewart uncomfortably discussing aspects of the film like marriage and vampire babies. Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner also appear to discuss their characters as well, interspersed with some behind-the-scenes footage. The second half of the video is entirely made up of behind-the-scenes clips, like Lautner running shirtless in the rain (this guy really hates clothes). It’s nothing too mind-blowing, but odds are if you’re a fan of the series this featurette will pique your interest.

Hit the jump to watch the featurette. Directed by Bill Condon, the film also stars Anna Kendrick, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, Michael Sheen and Kellan Lutz, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 opens on November 18th.

The release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 is only a little over a month away, and the publicity campaign is about to kick into high gear. A new TV spot for the pic has been released, touting the film as “the motion picture event the world has been waiting for” because the children of Somalia can’t get enough of that Bella. The spot gives us a good look at some of the wolf scenes, and I have to say they look better than they have before. The CGI on them has definitely improved.

Hit the jump to check out the TV spot. Directed by Bill Condon, the film stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Anna Kendrick, Dakota Fanning, Ashley Greene, Michael Sheen and Kellan Lutz, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 opens on November 18th. [Update: We've included another TV spot after the jump as well]

Exclusive: Sigourney Weaver Talks ABDUCTION, VAMPS and IT IS WHAT IT IS

by Christina Radish    Posted: September 23rd, 2011 at 10:05 am

The action thriller Abduction tells the story of Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner), a high school teenager who has the uneasy feeling that he’s living someone else’s life. His therapist, Dr. Geri Bennett (Sigourney Weaver), tries to talk him through his intense nightmares, but when he stumbles upon an image of himself as a little boy on a missing persons website, he realizes his parents (played by Jason Isaacs and Maria Bello) are not his own and that his entire life is a lie. Targeted by a team of trained killers, he is forced to go on the run with the only person he can trust, his neighbor Karen (Lily Collins), who he’s had a crush on for years.

At the film’s press day, actress Sigourney Weaver spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about the fun of playing roles originally written for men, what she enjoys about working with younger actors like co-stars Taylor Lautner and Lily Collins, and that she would be interested in exploring this character more, if there were to be a sequel. She also talked about how fun it is for her to see the ways kick-ass women have evolved in film, what made her want to jump into the vampire genre for Amy Heckerling’s upcoming comedy Vamps, and how her next role will be as a professor of queer theory in a film called It Is What It Is. Check out what she had to say after the jump.
